Brett Favre: Bucs Will Not Be Outsmarted

January 22nd, 2022

Joe is flabbergasted by fans who think the Bucs’ offense will somehow crumble just because the Rams have a good defense — one ranked worse than the Eagles’ — and Tampa Bay might be missing its All-Pro right tackle.

Are these same fans thinking the same thing about the Rams offense minus its starting left tackle?

Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre has all the confidence in the world in Bucco Bruce Arians and Tom Brady working around their challenges on the offensive line. Center Ryan Jensen is questionable with a sprained ankle, and Tristan Wirfs is more questionable with a high ankle sprain.

Bruce Arians and Brady “will not be outsmarted,” Favre explained with conviction on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week. He said the Bucs will be scheming all week to stop interior pressure with double and triple teams including using running backs.

The concern remains, per Favre, pressure up the middle from Aaron Donald, not so much anyone coming off the edge. Brady, per Favre, will get rid of the ball quickly most of the time and the Bucs would be wise to make Donald work as hard as he can in a physical game.

It should take a Hall of Fame type of effort from Donald to change the game, Favre said, and that includes distracting Brady by ending up near his feet on throws. Ironically, Favre acknowledged all the scheming of his Packers years ago didn’t always work against Bucs superstar defensive tackle Warren Sapp.

Favre recalled a game when his center, Frank Winters, came clean in a hurry.

“‘Dude, we can’t block [Sapp],”’ Favre said, quoting Winters. “This was like the second play of the game.”

So does Donald have a world-domination game in him for Sunday on short rest with the beastly interior of the Bucs’ offensive line likely ready to rock? Joe’s not betting on that.

Man, I love the Sapp / Favre interplay. It’s cool to listen to each of them talk about the other one with reverence and respect.

“Dude, we can’t block [Sapp],”’ Favre said, quoting Winters. “This was like the second play of the game.”

    ROTFLMAO!

  2. Capt.Tim Says:

Even with all the injuries, Brady has more weapons here, than he often had in New England.
We are still a talented team. Evans, Fournette, and Gronk are good enough to beat anybody.
If Gio Bernard plays tomorrow( heard he might), then expect him to be spred
Out at WR- where he is a mismatch
Gronk, Brate, and Evans are three great recievers, all over 6’5”.
The Rams depleted secondary cant handle three big talented pass catchers.

All hope is not lost. We are the SuperBowl champs. We went on the road and beat 3 very good teams last year.
We can damn sure beat Stafford and the Rams.

I had posted this elsewhere. More appropriate here.

  3. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Oh great Favre is betting on the bucs!! Crap!! … That dude is ALWAYS wrong!! It’s like the Brett curse or something… And hopefully Aikman isn’t calling this game like last week.. he OBVIOUSLY is jealous as hell about Brady and constantly bashes the bucs! I mean last week he may as well have worn an eagles jersey and said GO EAGLES!!! …. Hope we get Romo!!

  4. Swampbuc Says:

    Just…..need…….to……..block…….well……….and……….disrupt……….Stafford……..a lot.

    See Super Bowl / Mahomes.

  5. Alanbucsfan Says:

The teams that beat the Rams this year (49ers twice, Titans, Cardinals, Packers)
    did it by :
    Pressuring Stafford into making mistakes
    Winning the turnover battle
    Winning time of possession
    Run the ball effectively
    Won the penalties battle

Bucs can certainly do all 5 on Sunday..

  6. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

We need to run run run and run some more!! … Don’t let that front 4 pin it’s ears back… If the defense is playing well and keeping the score low is run that ball over and over and over!! Wear that line down!! I would rotate fornette, Vaughn, and even Bell… Throw in some Grayson and Miller end arounds until that defensive line has their hands on their hips and huffing and puffing!! … Then start the play actions!! … To win this game the bucs MUST establish that they are going to run even if it doesn’t gain a lot of yards and the defense will have to have one of its best games of the year!! That is the formula to win this game … And if they come out blitz happy they’re going to be down by 14 before the middle of the second quarter!! Rush 4 or 5 and make Stafford beat you!! A lot of disguised looks … This is the deepest Stafford has ever been in the playoffs and he has a lot more pressure on his neck than the bucs do at home as the defending champs!! … Hopefully the Rams get cocky like the saints and act like they already beat the bucs…. This game is the one!! They will beat the 9rs or Packers … Rogers worst record is against the bucs!! And he’s a notorious choker! So is Garoppolo …. We have yet to see if Stafford is in these kind of big games… Hopefully he’s a choker too, his dog just died and his wife left him and took the kids and he just found out his dad has measles!! …. GO BUCS!!

  7. Swampbuc Says:

Right about Aikman, dude with the long handle. I can’t stand that loser. How is he in the hall of fame anyway?

Everything was the Eagles playing bad or dumb, not anything the Bucs were doing well. Said the roughing penalty against Brady wasn’t roughing. He and Joe Buck are the worst of the different networks’ “A teams.”

I wish he’d get caught with his pants down in an elementary school or so,etching just so we wouldn’t have to listen to him anymore.

  8. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Swampbuc … Lol!! …. I’m glad I’m not the only one that noticed that!! And it’s every game he calls for the bucs and it’s like you said it’s nothing the bucs are doing right it’s all because the other team is doing something wrong …. I think Romo is the best analyst I’ve ever seen in football!! … I like Gene dekerhoff (I think that’s his name) on the radio but he’s of course a bucs fan so easy to like his analysis… But even tho he’s a bucs fan he still calls it how he sees it

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

While the focus is on our Offense vs Rams defense….I think the game will hinge on our Championship defense….100% present & healthy…….stopping their offense….
Win the turnover & penalties battle,,,,,,,we win.

  10. Gerinda Says:

    Thank you Mr. Farve!
    Strong faith, Buccaneers will win!

  11. Joshua porter Says:

There whole middle of there defense isngoing to be backups. Bucs should have a huge advantage there and imo is where this game is going to be one play action to gronk over the middle . Gronk with 115 yards and 2 tuddies this week . LFG BUCS

  12. Adrnagy Says:

I said it all week. This game is not about our oline. Or wr or rams defense.

This game is about our defense. Our defense played a almost shut out last week. And thats with acouple players coming back from a 3-4 game absence.

Also our defense is up for a rematch from wk3. Rams defense is ALL ABOUT donald. Stop donald and its a different ball game. Let him dominate its a whole different game.

  13. BillyBucco Says:

Favre believed the Bucs would win it all last year.
Seems like pretty good analysis to me.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Looking back at the Rams 2021 season (12-5 record) …

o Rams were 10-1 when they led or were tied at halftime.
o Rams were 2-4 when they trailed at halftime.

The one game that they lost when leading at halftime was their last game of the season against the 49ers (Rams lost 27-24 in OT after leading 17-3 at halftime). SF came back to tie it 24-24 with 26 secs to go in regulation, then won it with a FG in OT. Rams dominated the 1st half 34 plays to 20 plays. 49ers dominated the 2nd half & OT 49 plays to 31 plays.

Rams trailed at halftime in only 6 games this season; they came back to win 2 of those (lost 4). Trailed the Ravens by 6 pts at halftime, but came back to win 20-19. Trailed the Seahawks by 4 pts in their 1st game, but came back to win 26-17.

Just as a generalization, if the Rams at winning at halftime there’s over a 90% chance that they’ll win the game. If they’re losing at halftime, odds are very good (67%) that we’ll beat them.

  15. Listnfrmafar Says:

I will say this, Brady’s last game as a Patriot, against Tenn, Henry ran for 202 yds and they still should of won. His receiving core was that of Edleman with a bad knee which finally made him retire, Sanu who couldn’t catch a cold in Siberia, Ben Watson 38 yr old TE with a bad ankle, Phillip Dorsett & Nkeal Harry who you’ll never read about. Bucs do have better WR’S so there’s always a chance.

  16. Listnfrmafar Says:

DR, didn’t Harbaugh go for 2 on the final play of that Ravens game preventing them from going into OT?

  17. Joe in Michigan Says:

Aikman said during the Eagles vs. Bucs game that he’d rather be calling the Dallas game. I think most Bucs fans wished that was the case.

  18. Bqen green Says:

Until the bucs prove they can stop the Rams pass rush, it is most definitely about the bucs o line. They couldn’t handle them with a fully healthy line, a healthy LF, and Godwin and Brown. LF is the key to this game, if he’s close to full strength with what looked like a completely torn hammy, Ben would be surprised. If LF is ineffective it will be a long day for Brady. They just don’t have guys that can get open that quickly. Evans isn’t exactly a great route runner, and gronk needs time to work the middle. I know they wanna get as many guys into the pattern as possible, all Ben’s saying is that may not be the best way to challenge the Rams.

  19. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Another aspect that is huge in any playoff game is home field. While the Tampa Bay crowd and stadium design is so quiet it won’t impact the Rams offense in anyway, it will still have a huge impact on how Tom can play because the silent counts, crowd momentum swings, the Gronk injury and super bowl like atmosphere of the previous match up in LA made winning very difficult for Tampa Bay.

While the stadium provide no issue for opposing offences, it also allows our offense to play in a comfortable atmosphere.

  20. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

Oh it will be loud by Bucs faithful and impact the game. You can believe that! We have been waiting for this opportunity as fans for years! Stand up and be loud Bucs fans! I’ll be there to do my part. Go Bucs! This is our house!

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m extremely nervous about this game. Still, to be the champ you gotta beat’em.
I hope our Bucs knock their D’s in the dirt.

  22. AtlBuc Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong. In the last game we played the Rams, all of Donald’s plays came towards the end of the game when we HAD to pass the ball. Earlier in the game, he was in the witness protection program.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Listnfrmafar … No, other way around. Rams scored a TD to make it 20-19 and then THEY went for the 2-pt conversion and failed. Ravens got the ball back with under a minute but flopped.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Still don’t see what everyone’s so nervous about. Rams pulled out all the stops this year to win the Super Bowl (adding Stafford, Von Miller, Beckham among others). Bucs did pretty much the same thing last year AND again this year. Two giants playing for ‘King of the Mountain’.

The one who wants it the most is gonna win. The other will still have had a great season, but won’t go home with the whole enchilada. Such is life. Personally I think the Bucs want it more, and that they’ll win, but in a close one. Bucs 24-20.

  25. Eddie Marz Says:

Man, I’m so excited. Let the games begin. The Bucs can win for sure, but it won’t be easy. Nobody ever said that it would. GOBUCS! Go Mike Go Gronk Go Defense.

  26. Snoman4 Says:

Our defense needs to get pressure with 4 and not rely on the blitz. If we get pressure with 4 we can play more coverage and hopefully disrupt their routes and timing. On Offense we need to stick with the run even if it isn’t particularly effective just like we did against the Eagles. Need lots of screens by the TES and RBS to slow their rush down. A few sweeps by Scottie against their below average LBs and Safeties will be a key also. The short and intermediate routes over the middle will be where we make them pay. Brady needs to be extremely patient and throw the ball away if he has to so that he avoids sacks and interceptions. Go bucs.

  27. Franco Says:

It all comes down to 2.4 to 2.6 seconds… a few 2.2 and we’ve got this.

  28. David Says:

LoL. That’s awesome. Two plays in… We can’t block Sapp

  29. Criselle Says:

The only thing aaron donald has is violence. He should be locked up in jail and not playing in the nfl.

  30. Bucs&Bolts Says:

    Donald is overrated….

  31. NamVetTony Says:

The commenters here are great for comedy. Majority act like experts when most never coach or even play football. Spout your hopes and dreams but don’t act like you are some kind of guru and really know what you are talking about. I am a expert, I have watched football for 70 years and the Bucs will get their back to back SBs with TB.

    Amen!!

  33. E.Vi. Says:

Well I am perfect in the playoffs won every game. The Rams all the sudden have a great defense because they played the Cardinals?? Let me tell you the Rams are going back home and 49’ers are the next for BUCS like I said the BUCS are the most complete and dangerous team in NFL. BUCS WIN by 15.

  34. Rick Says:

Rams stopped the bucs again. Brady couldn’t get the job done this time.
