A Different View Of Tom Brady

January 21st, 2022

Vinny knows.

Perhaps only one man can get away with not being impressed by Tom Brady being a starting quarterback at age 44.

And he was on national radio talking about it this week.

Former Bucs QB Vinny Testaverde, Tampa Bay’s No. 1 overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft, was on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week and made it very clear that he’s not impressed by Brady playing and succeeding at 44. Testaverde said what’s impressive is how well Brady is playing and his durability.

Many probably forgot that Testaverde started six games for a 7-9 Panthers team in 2007 — the year in which he turned 44 years old. It would have been a much bigger national story if Carolina was a better team, or was a big-market club.

But in those days, the Panthers were a 13-year-old franchise a couple of years removed from the playoffs. They got scant attention in a division whose headlines were dominated by Michael Vick, Drew Brees’ high-flying offense and Jon Gruden.

Testaverde talked a bit about the physical sacrifices required to play at 44, and he lamented that he wishes he had all the scientific knowledge Brady possesses to beat Father Time. And no, he doesn’t think Brady is going to hang up his cleats.

Imagine how well Vinny (& so many others) might have turned out, had he gotten fine coaching earlier in his career, here.

I love Beckles’ story where he heard Vinny once ask a receiver where he’d like the seams, on his pass. Seam placement on a down-the-field pass? That’s bonkers!! Vinny had mad skills! It’s such a shame we couldn’t reward him for it & for being a good man, also.

Vinny in a Bucs uniform next time please, Joe.

Vinny with today’s pass interference rules would’ve been a very different career arc.

There is no doubt in my mind that Vinny would have been better with a better pro pass set coach than Perkins or Richard Williamson.

But to me the number one thing that sets QB’s apart is processing and recognition skills and despite all his superior throwing skills, he was a little less than average in processing speed.

You think TB12 can’t run, how about Vinny cement shoes. The last time Brady beat the Rams was in SB 2018. The score was 13-3. They had Suh and Donald in the middle and Talib was a corner. Goff was the QB.and Kupp didn’t play. They got to him many times with a decent Oline and great FB. The wr core about the same Edleman and Gronk ( he got hurt in that game to) It’s all about protection folks. This will be a very short game if Brady can’t stay upright.

Too many QBs play one year too long. They get injured and it’s ugly.

Favre, Brees, Manning all come to mind. TB12 is the goat. He led the league in all statistical categories. Go out with intrigue. Go out in style. He should retire.

It’s such a shame that Vinny began his career with the horrid Yuks under maniac Ray Perkins. Talk about talent gone wasted. Watch highlights – Vinny three one of the prettiest balls anyone’s ever seen. Glad for him that he did have some success in the league late in his career. And considering the beatings he took as a Buc it’s a miracle he played at 44!

Either a fake story or Vinny made it up… a QB can’t choose where to put the seams on a football. It rotates. A difference of a receiving player putting his arms out two inches further in front of his body completely changes the seam placement. Vinny couldn’t control ball placement on a receiver’s body much less anything more difficult than that…just ask Penn St… he hit five Nittany Lions in the numbers in the National Championship game. Great physical tools but not the most cerebral of QBs to ever try to dissect a zone.

Geno, fair point about processing speed.

Brandon, I can’t confirm or deny Beckles’ story hence, I have no problem with anything you said. It is a fantastic story, after all.

People make fun of Perkins but Perkins was a man well ahead of his time. His offensive system is what Brady ran and has brought to the Bucs. The Big Tuna was a big fan of the system and so has his coaching tree been as well. Look up Erhardt-Perkins system, as it is one of the 3 dominate systems ran by offenses in the NFL today. Brady mastered the system with its added innovations from Weis and McDaniels.
