Tom Brady May Be Too Aggressive For Bruce Arians

December 13th, 2021

“But coach, I want to run!”

In the first half when the Bucs were rolling, nothing was going to stop Tom Brady if he needed inches for a first down.

Brady, never known as a scrambler, has picked up his run game in recent games. Yesterday, Brady laid out for a first down after he scrambled and took a good shot from a Buffalo defender in the process.

Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians is never a fan of his quarterbacks taking hits from running. He thinks they take enough hits standing in the pocket waiting for long-developing plays before delivering a ball. Mr. Excitement, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, had developed a nice running game until Arians put the kibosh on that.

Even yesterday when asked about Josh Allen, Arians remarked he wouldn’t run Allen near as much as Bills coach Sean McDermott does.

So when Arians was asked about Brady taking a shot after scrambling and reaching out for a first down, Arians smiled and quipped, “Yeah, that’s enough of that sh!t.”

Joe wonders if Tommy will get a scolding this week from his veteran coach?

Brady taking more risks running the ball indicates to me that he is done after this year. He knows any serious injury is career ending at his age.

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Arians gets nervous when Brady runs w/o sliding

  3. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

there is only one possible thing that would completely eliminate Bucs Super Bowl quest , and that is injury to TB12 , so I agree with BA knock off the running Tommy.

  4. JGhotier Says:

You can’t stop a guy from being competitive

Nor can you ask them to get 10-11 yards instead of 13….in Brady I trust may be the best saying/expression here

But you also don’t want a Josh Allen hobbling on one foot situation happen either….or whatever is going on w/ Lamar Jackson lately and his numerous INT’s, bad decisions and 20 rush attempts a game (from a FN Quarterback)!

  5. KingLDavid54 Says:

@John Olmstead… I have the opposite take on that, I think it shows off Brady’s ever-burning competitive fire and possibly portends a year or more left in the tank.

  6. JGhotier Says:

….not in the NFL at least (to end my previous comment)

  7. Listnfrmafar Says:

He doesn’t dig in and extend, no 1st down and turn the ball over. Brady unlike the secondary is not made out of glass. Don’t forget he is very pliable. BA wouldn’t of run Allen that much, so he would of had no chance to come back in that game. McDermott, your job is safe. Bill’s knew they had to do whatever they could to win in order to keep up with the Pats.

  8. PassingThru Says:

Brady got fired up after a few cheap shots by the Buffalo DL. I believe it was Ed Oliver in particular with that extracurricular shove after the whistle, and trash-talking by Matt Milano that fired Brady up.

  9. #8 Says:

Was Brady being too aggressive throwing bombs in the 2nd half? I read Brady checked into the bomb vs. a short/run play. If that’s the case, yes, he’s being too aggressive.

  10. Cannon Says:

I suspect opposing defensive players are particular reluctant to hit Brady hard.

I mean, its Tom Brady… the Godfather of the NFL.

  11. Francisco Guzman Says:

It seemed like those crossing patterns where open all day. Bucs need to take what the defense gives them. Keep going to it.

  12. Coburn Says:

Agreed on the crossing patterns Guzman. Was hoping to see more of those to Evans, but Godwin has also shown himself to be good in those

  13. Coburn Says:

That expression lol. Brady looks terrified

  14. Jason from JA Says:

    Brady is feeling it.
He’ll do what it takes to win!
He’s really enjoying his time playing for the Bucs

  15. Jason from JA Says:

I think he may be concentrating on sliding …
Don’t think that he doesn’t practice that too.

  16. Ed Says:

C’mon, on the 2 runs of 10 or more yards, Brady was sliding 3 or 4 yards before any contact. I don’t consider that risky when a QB is sliding but there was one play where he got stood up and lunged for a first down. That is what I call being too aggressive.

Those shots down the field in the second half were open, Gronk wasn’t fast enough to get one and it went off his fingertips. The one to Godwin was uncatchable.

I’d be more concerned that the WR screens are telegraphed. Likewise the screen to Fournette that he lost 7 yards on. Those are just dumb plays when you have Godwin and Evans and Gronk terriorizing their secondary. Stop with the horizontal stuff when you have those weapons. Everything should go into the middle of the field or towards the sidelines. Please no more sideways or backwards throws. Fournette is not Warrick Dunn.

  17. DBS Says:

Brady came here to win. If he sees a play is not there but another is I am sure he will take it. How long has he been in this league now? And he has won how much?
He does not need to be second guessed about what he does.

  18. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

He looks much faster than he used to in New England!!

  19. Bojim Says:

BA’s right. They run Allen too much. He’s not going to last.

  20. Bojim Says:

They’re going to ruin Allen. Hate to see that. He’s too good.

  21. Tds Says:

He got his knee cleaned up in the offseason after what sounds like years of having to nurse it. Yes it’s dangerous, but he probably feels more comfortable. Like Sherman playing the new Swiss Army Knife position, it shows leadership and will to win, and gives the younger guys a smack upside the head. That’s how you win games, style.

  22. Boo Radley Says:

Brady now slides like the veteran MLB player he could have been, cleats up into second, scaring the crap out of the DBs, who now have to hurdle Tom rather than diving at him helmet first, as Tom Brady “breaks up the ‘double play’. A bit more risky? Sure. But nothing compared to the risk Josh Rosen, Lamar and even Drew Brees running and sliding on wide, open lane opportunities when a Defense never game plans against a galloping GOAT. Rather than chastise Tom for running, how about giving him more autonomy in calling plays when it comes to packages, personnel and clock management?

  23. WalkdaPlank Says:

When BA was hired all we ever heard was “No risk it, no biscuit” and how aggressive he was in Arizona.

Don’t know what happened but he has completely abandoned that philosophy now. He does not like the QB running (understandable with 44 yr old Brady), doesn’t go for it on critical 4th downs nearly as much (maybe because he has a better defense, and we have seen a huge decline in deep passes (because Brady is the goat of dink and dunk).

All I know is, the Bucs are winning.

  24. sauron's eye Says:

I think Josh Allen runs too much. I know he took some big hits yesterday. I would hate to see his career shortened by injury. I know winning is all that counts but if I was coaching him I would make him slide 99% of the time to keep from getting hit. Turn him into a Rodgers style quarterback, he is not a Lamar or Kyler type.

  25. Listnfrmafar Says:

He saw an opening and went for it. Story over. I doubt he runs against the Jets or Panthers.

  26. ClodHopper Says:

That was too aggressive for me too.

  27. Corndog Says:

Tom Brady running the ball isn’t smart, an throwing the ball to Gronkowski, Brown, an Fournette same 3 players is called a pattern. Which the defense will pick up sooner or later. Spread the ball around so they will have to cover everyone. And Ro Jo should run the ball some in the 3rd quarter even if he doesn’t get yards Fournette can rest for the 4th quarter. You know winning time, close out

  28. E.Vi. Says:

I like people saying bills should of would of should of done this lol. Plus Brady is the MVP there isn’t one QB that’s better than him and their 20 years younger than him the guy is 44 playing like he’s 20 and I wouldn’t doubt if he has 5000 plus yards and another 10 plus touchdowns. If it wasn’t for poor play calling he would have even more yards and TOUCHDOWNS

  29. bucschamp Says:

the defensive guy crawling to catch Tom was funny as hell.

  30. George Says:

What BS move by the coach ! Maybe he should be talking to his defense that now sucks. Looks like one and done in the playoffs unless the defense WAKES UP !!!!
