“Real Physical Like No Other”

Lavonte David speaks

So what exactly has made the Bucs great again?

No, it’s not a mic drop answer of “Tom Brady.” But the Goat sure helps the farm.

There are many factors and Lavonte David spoke to one of them today on Pat McAfee’s show. Retired linebacker A.J. Hawk asked David about the intensity of training camp. Hawk, who played 11 NFL seasons, suspected they were especially intense this summer — not soft stuff designed to preserve a veteran team.

“Camp was real physical, real physical like no other,” David said. “There was a lot of banging, a lot of full padded practice, a lot of cursing each other out. A lot of offense-on-defense brawls and stuff like that. It got real competitive. You know obviously when you got Tom [Brady] on the other side and then guys on defense — you know me, Devin [White], some guys like that — it get real competitive. You got A.B. on the other side, as well. It get real competitive, real fun. It gets the point where you keep beating up on each other throughout camp and one day somebody going to let it loose, just get a brawl in and whatever it may be.”

It intrigued Joe to hear David talk as a 10-year NFL veteran and call the 2021 camp “real physical like no other.” That’s almost hard to believe (that’s not what Joe witnessed) but Joe will take David at his word, and certainly the Bucs came out balling and winning with a 6-1 record.

Man, it’s so comforting that Bucco Bruce Arians knows what the hell he is doing.

Didn’t sound like he had a problem with A.B…..

Camp Cutthroat or Camp Cupcake was actually Camp Cutthroat
Yes, something isn’t adding up. –Joe

Camp Cupcake was actually Camp Cutthroat?

  4. Buczilla Says:

We were deprived of it for so long and I was so jaded from the constant losing, that I forgot what quality coaching was. I shake my head from time to time wondering what the hell the coaches are doing on both sides of the ball, but this group of guys/gals is easily the best ha we’ve ever had.

  5. Mort Says:

Dirk Koetter wouldn’t stand for this.

  6. Hawk Says:

Instead of “physical’, could he have meant ‘intense’? They are not necessarily the same.

Bugzilla, wasn’t BA Bucs coach in 2019?

  8. Buczilla Says:

Listerine, yup, he was. Your point being? I’m not going to rip on Jameis if that’s what you’re seeking. It is what it is and it was for the best.

the d plays nastier in those unis…

Covid list is growing it seems. I really hope the bucs can stay away from it.

I’m with you, Joe– I call BS! Way too many missed tackles this season and lack of effort/mental sharpness on important plays. Did you guys see how Davis outfought our DB to get the critical 4th down conversion on the Bill’s game-tying drive? That wasn’t the exception, but the RULE this season according to my eyes.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Seems like I recall many calling it Camp Cupcake also. First REALLY physical game of the year I thought was the Rams … and they beat the snot out of us physically. Quite a few injuries in that game too. Bucs have definitely toughened up as the season wore on.

  13. Jmarkbuc Says:

Has the defense become “ great again”?

    Haven’t seen it, yet.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

We need AB back in shape to get these CBs into shape against an all star in practice.

I hate how people referee to that as pewter. It’s grey and ugly. Need to do white all year, and original creamsicle with two color helmets.

  16. Ed Says:

I really love the depth the Bucs have on offense as there is enough talent that they can handle a few starters out for short periods of time.

But this defense is really a different story. The backups on the back end are out of their league when they have to play in a tight game. Right now Shaq Barrett is the only edge rusher playing well. JPP and JTS are not making enough impact plays. No question about it, Licht has to do a better job drafting defense to get the right combination of youth and veterans that can play Bowles scheme.

I hoped the Bucs watched how the Rams played against Kyler Murray last night. That was some incredible defense. I can only hope one of the Packers final 4 games can defense Rogers like the Rams did to Murray. Just get one more loss for the Packers and hope the Bucs don’t stumble vs New Orleans.

I also hope Leftwich learns his lesson that his horizonal screens to Fournette are ineffective. If they are going to throw to Leonard, put him in motion or split him out, he can run patterns. Don’t throw him the ball 5 yards behind the backfield and stop running those uncreative first down runs into the line.

There are certain times plays are tipped off, no one is fooling anyone.

Remember when so many trolls in the comments kept saying Arians was too old and a re-tread coach….

    BA 4 PRESIDENT!

Yea he was and they should’ve been a playoff team that year! He needed one more offseason to clear the stench!

  20. Ericb Says:

Great physicality in the game.defense!!!! Lfgo!!! #1 seed!!! Keep it up dont let off the gas LFGO!!!!! Play hard hit hard!!!

  21. JGhotier Says:

Bruce seems to be really smartly calculated here in knowing every team this year were going to play us harder than before and give us their best shot game-in and game-out. We had to toughen up this team to be able to withstand EVERY team’s best shot EVERY week. Heck, some teams think we are their Super Bowl game this year being the Defending Champions and all.

It’s a wise move and an interesting subject. You also have to find the balance though too because you want the team to last the season and not wear out….on top of the fact that we had a much longer season last year than we’ve been accustomed to in almost a couple decades….yet still be able withstand the opposing team’s best shot when we are a Playoff-like game for all of our opposing teams this year (and hopefully for another EXTRA 3-4 games this year). We are having to play w/ Playoff intensity almost every game this year if we want to win due to being the hunted, unlike last year as much.

Super fascinating stuff and Bruce deserves a lot of credit if we last again this year. That’s veteran coaching and knowing your team and where they need to be at for another run. I’m sure BA and Staff have really put a lot of thought into that TC approach for a long time….almost in a field study kind of way.

Lavonte David is such happy dude with how the Bucs are now, him tell the newer Young Bucs ….it wasn’t always like this in Tampa…No Superbowl…not always winning, No Tom….it’s way different than what it can be, yall real lucky don’t even know!

I abhor the pewter/gray unis. Looks too close the the Lions uni and when our D gags that just multiplies the wretch. I aint going all gaga on creamcles, either. I like the red/white, or red gray look.
Creamcles=Josh “MJ” Freeman, while red\white = Mike “Atrain” Allstott. Thats my take
    Go Bucs!
