Mike Evans Explains What Makes A Good Defensive Back

December 8th, 2021

Bucs WR Mike Evans.

Mike Evans is just a handful of games from finishing his eighth season in the NFL and his resume says he’s a future member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He’s every bit the veteran. He’s seen a ton of defensive backs come and go.

So Evans today in his press conference after practice was asked about Buffalo’s defense and he raved about it, never mind two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Tre’Davious White is gone for the year with a knee injury.

Doesn’t matter much, Evans said, Buffalo’s defensive backs are tough. So Evans was asked what makes a good DB, specifically Buffalo’s. Pretty interesting response and perspective from a wide receiver.

“They play really hard,” Evans said of Buffalo’s secondary. “DBs that play really hard are usually the best DBs in the league. They are not too cool out there. They are going to tackle. They communicate. They play physical.”

Man, Joe thinks Evans hit the nail on the head with the tackling element.

Joe will take a defensive back who tackles and puts a guy on the ground rather than some dude who yaps all game long, always tries to arm tackle and hopes he can punch the ball out all the while he’s being dragged five yards downfield by the receiver.

And for those Joe guesses will ask, Evans is 206 yards shy of 1,000 for the eighth straight season. And Evans has five games left to accomplish that. Or in other words, average 41 yards a game.

Personally, Joe hopes Evans gets 1,000 yards no later than the Jets game. That way we won’t listen to the whiners bellyache it took Evans 17 games to reach 1,000 yards receiving.

I’d love to know from our all world WR group
Which one of our Buc DBs is the best man cover guy

    Go Bucs

  2. Robert Says:

Not like ME is tough to teckle….just point to the sidelines.

  3. Medicated Pete Says:

Mike complains to the refs more than LeBron. He needs to stop watching basketball

  4. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

We are so lucky to have both Mike and Chris. They are awesome players and team 1st. I hate hearing people down on either of them.

  5. Cobraboy Says:

Best Buc receiver ever. HoF. Ring of Honor. Solid citizen.

  6. Listnfrmafar Says:

He should know he made a great tackle on Godwin the play before the pick six in Atlanta. Does this mean he’ll be pulling the alligator arms trick he did in the last two games? He’s soft.

  7. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Man the ignorant rants about one of the best players in the league is hilarious!!!! You fools want to say he is soft and all this sh!t about him not wanting to be tackled and yadda yadda…how ignorant can you get?!?!?! You obviously don’t know what a great caliber WR looks like and haven’t checked his stats and ability to achieve what he has, even when he has had a season or two ended by injury early…he still hit 1,000 yards!!!! He played through a hyper extended knee injury last year in the playoffs. He took one of the worst hits straight to the head in an ATL game 4-5 years ago and came back in the game after holding on to the damn ball while he got his head taken off!!! Y’all are ignorant Kori s with your foolish takes on a guy like ME13!!!

  8. NaplesBucsFan Says:

    *Morons not Koris

  9. SB Says:

    Listnfrmafar. You epitomize idiocy sometimes.

  10. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    Mike Evans is Soft ?
Who can forget when he body slammed that defensive back on a block ?

  11. Robert Says:

naples just said check yo sheets…er stats.

    either way lol

  12. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Robert…ME13 can say check yo sheet because he’s got the numbers to brag about!! He’s been our most consistent and accomplished player since he got here

  13. David Says:

    Listnfrmafar

😂. The complete ignorance of some of the people that post on here is remarkable…. Yet you just took the weeks crown with that stupidity. Congrats

  14. gbobucsfan Says:

solid player, solid man off the field, seems to be a solid guy in the locker room.

  15. Listnfrmafar Says:

Go watch the last two games and stop living in the past. He turtled in Atlanta then got up screaming about a face mask. He a pass at not.sure in Indy or prior that he cut into the middle and stop short because he saw a safety and last game in Atlanta he slowed down on the deep pass from Brady to protect himself for the safety that eventually knocked him on his arse. In the Indy game he let the ball bounce off him for a pick six (which goes on Brady) they ran the exact play right before the pick 6 in Atlanta and he ran into Godwin and knocked him down ( by the way no one if front of Godwin). He let a tipped ball in Indy go right through his hands in the end zone. Do I need to go back to earlier in the season. Hey listen, I thinks he a great #2 or 3 receiver and like him on the team but to say he’s what he was a few years back is a stretch. That’s all.

  16. Beeej Says:

I noticed he didn’t mention Lattimore

  17. Listnfrmafar Says:

    Beeej I was being nice.

  18. Buccos Says:

Complete dish and idiot. ME13 is AMAZING and we are damn lucky to have him. He is so good that he won a Heisman (for Johnny Manziel). Nuf said

  19. Buccos Says:

    Doosh

  20. Listnfrmafar Says:

Loyal fans have a man crush, I get it. I want him in the HOF, but to claim he is an elite #1 wr in the NFL is a stretch comapred to those playing now. Even on the Bucs when AB comes back Evan’s willows to #3 and would.be the best #3 in the league.

  21. Buc king Says:

By far elite #1…any other team would force it to him and feed him all day…
But we have a lot mouths to feed I respect him pitting team first and still putting up amazing numbers..I’m shocked when he doesn’t get Red zone targets…currently the best offense buc in buc history…brady wins another superbowl he’s becomes top 2

  22. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

I wish our DBs played tough and not like soft served ice cream. To make his record more viable he should end the season with 1100 yards. I hope he gets at least 1300 and14 tds to go with that.

  23. SB Says:

And I second my statement from earlier.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t care if a corner can tackle, so long as they can cover. Ryan Smith was a good tackler, he got good at it from being constantly burned and needing to chase and tackle WRs.

  25. Crickett Baker Says:

He’s not tough? His father was so abusive that his mother’s brother killed him in the street right outside of his house when he was 9 years old. He has overcome a lot.

  26. Buczilla Says:

Lol, Mike’s resume speaks for itself and while he’s not in the same class as Moss and AB in their primes, he’s the best thing since. Even Brady, the best player regardless of position that the NFL has ever seen has an off game every now and then. Mike is no different and while you can nitpick some of his individual games to some extent, his entire body of work is beyond reproach.

Everyone is obviously entitled to their opinions no matter how outlandish they may be and a lot of these negative opinions about Mike made me laugh. Maybe Mike jilted these folks for an autograph or something? Regardless, theres no need to be mean to them or call them names, but to each his/her own.

  27. Lakewood Ranch Phil Says:

I’ve been reading the Joe’s for a while and know it’s clear which Joe wrote this one. I agree and love watching Antoine Winfield Jr. square up and tackle! He gas had some bad misses, but few and far between. Go bucs!

  28. Ben green Says:

What makes a good defensive back? They are short recievers who can’t catch!!! All kidding aside, other than physical attributes, it’s really all about technique. At this level, nobody has a huge speed advantage. It’s about using the sideline, keeping your hips level, and above all, knowledge of the route tree. This is Ben’s problem with Evans, and I suspect Brady’s problem too. If he can’t physically mismatch, he gets lazy. Top of the tree is what the master always taught. My old friend Brandon browner would make Evans tap out halfway through the first quarter. That bastard would kick the snot out ya before you even thought about running a route. I miss those guys. The league is all fantasy, and chuck it everywhere. Ben had himself a good old dolphin flogging watching my pats play highschool football the other night. Love y’all. Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah. See y’all in Englewood, god willing. Ben takes that back, he’d be a wreck for two weeks, forget the game

  29. adam from ny Says:

dude is our most finesse receiver out there…

and on his way to yet another 1100 to 1200 yard season

  30. adam from ny Says:

mike is not soft, he plays very smart when it comes to protecting himself…rarely gets hung out to dry…smart about the physical approach to his game – for longevity…

even with all the good things he and brady do, they are still very far apart at times, in knowing what the other’s going to do…

in fact i’m going to say it again, he never uses mike’s height…only gronk’s height….he doesn’t let mike ever really go up and get it…only gronk…

i want to see brady put that ball up high by the goal posts for mike like jameis used to do…i don’t understand why that’s not in the playbook…mike WAS great at going up to get it by the goal posts

    #Wuz

  31. Buc king Says:

Good point adam..the high ball in the end zone to evans is missed

  32. Listnfrmafar Says:

Buc King, he had one in Indy, went right through his hands.
Teams he would be #1 wr.
    Pat’s
    Jets
    Jags
    Houston
    New Orleans
    Atl (without Ridley)
    Miami
    Balt
    Raiders
    Denver
    Eagles
    Giants
    Detroit

So 13 out of 31, so I guess he is a #1, just not on Bucs.

  33. #1bucsfan Says:

Joe yet them gripe if don’t mean nothing when he’s done it the previous 7 years with 16 games so if they speak it holds no weight
