Jags Trying To Raid Bucs Coaches

December 28th, 2021

Bucs OC Bryon Leftwich.

This will probably be a recurring theme for a month and maybe more.

The Jags, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, have asked the Bucs permission to interview offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich for their head coach opening created by firing lap-dance-receiving, kicker-kicking Urban Meyer.

Also on the Jags’ to-do list is to talk to Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for the same position.

Earlier this week, Bowles was linked to the Raiders opening.

The Jags job is attractive. They already have a quarterback, so whoever is the new coach will likely get all of Trevor Lawrence’s contract to develop him.

And besides, if a coach wins six games there, it would be like a wild card berth because the standards are so miserable.

Geez, the only reason to go to the Jags is the money. It’s a one and done gig for a head coach. Back to a OC or DC after two seasons. Trask is a better NFL ready QB than Lawrence, so I would expect the Jags will need to find a veteran if the want to win right away. I’d be more concerned if Bowles leaves than Leftwich. Whatever..as long as we have Brady, Gronk, and AB. Lol.

    “The Jags job is attractive.”

    No. It’s not.

  3. Richard Dickson Says:

It’s attractive in that the owner there doesn’t have a hair trigger on his coaches (Urban Meyer being an extreme outlier).

  4. Biff Barker Says:

    ^^^

    Bingo, 4ever. one and done.

Leftwich should follow Bowles example. The Jets are a career killer for head coaches too.

  5. Dew Says:

I’m probably in the minority but I think a new OC would be interesting for the Bucs. Obviously Brady would have a say.

  6. Mike C Says:

Said everyone to Tony D when he took the HC job in Tampa. And we didn’t have a QB!

  7. BigPoppaBuc Says:

At this point it’s hard to believe there isn’t already a plan in place for the next head coach in Tampa. Only question is is it BL or Bowles? Personally, I’m still torn as to who I’d prefer. I lean towards Bowles because defensive stability would keep us more competitive post Brady. BL is intriguing mostly because of his age.

  8. Beeej Says:

I wouldn’t coach the Jags unless they got a new general manager, that place is a zoo and has been for years

  9. Will Says:

This honestly needs to stop. No team should be allowed to contact teams until after the final game of the year which is the Superbowl.

  10. C2asante Says:

Any head coaching opportunity is a career advancement for an assistant coach. Anyone scared to go to a team with a poor record or lack of top notch talent should not be a head coach anywhere. Real winners don’t fear a great challenge, they embrace it. While the Jags have a poor record, they have a generational talented young QB, over $70 million in cap space to spend, lots of high draft picks including the likely number one pick, and an owner with very deep pockets and a willingness to spend. That is not at all a bad deal for any coach who believes in their ability to build and run a team.

  11. Eric Says:

hopefully this doesnt cause distraction like when Monte announced he was leaving for Tennessee. But having Brady probably insulates us from that kind of thing.

  12. ocala Says:

Bucs will receive a 3rd round pick if either is hired by another team.

Seems like the best coach to replace Byron Leftwich would be Clyde Christianson.

  13. captivajim Says:

can we gat a few draft choices for BL??

  14. orlbucfan Says:

I recall the days when Clyde Christianson stunk!! He has come a long way. I agree on keeping Bowles over Leftwich. But, either way, I wish them both well.

  15. Bojim Says:

Jags will probably get the number one or two pick too. Take BL but leave TB alone.

  16. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

No harm in interviewing. They have to get the league requirement out of the way that’s all they’re doing. Watching Miami put the smack down on the team he has the hardest of times figuring out proves he’s not HC material no matter what BA says. He has the GOAT and one of the best OLs in the league and he could only muster what should have been 3 points? He doesn’t adjust quickly enough to a team that game plans for his offense. I would rather have Bowels as head coach. He does have some experience as HC even though it was a losing team effort. Here he at least knows the players and is in a much better offensive position than when with the Jets. Last year the adjustments he made to win us the Super Bowl proved he deserves another shot. They should not let him interview for the same position in another team.

  17. T REX Says:

    I will help him pack

  18. Jerry Says:

You have to interview 2 minority candidates now, right? I think I remember they changed the rule? So the Jags are getting that requirement out of the way real quick. Expect several teams to do the same thing. Interview both Bucs assistants and that’s done. And no one will question your intentions.

To be clear I favor more minority hires. But I think the Rooney rule is a stupid way to do it. And I wish candidates will realize they are being jerked around and decline interviews with teams who you know aren’t serious. Of course that’s easy for me to say to decline a head coaching interview.

And Jags job is not attractive. Their owner is an idiot. The front office is poor. The jury is still out on Lawrence. And there are issues all over the roster. After what Bowles went through with the Jets, I’d be shocked if he puts himself in that kind of bad situation again.

DavidBigBucFan99 Says: By your logic Bruce Arians and all the other coaches on the staff must suck too huh? And I guess Sean Payton must be the best coach in the NFL…. You are such an expert that you can see through that Super Bowl winning season, Division Championship winning season, best offense in the NFL rating … and you see a Coach who is not qualified to be a head coach. With your superior talent why are you critiquing coaches here instead of running a professional team as you are so obviously qualified to do?

  20. Snook Says:

    Please take both.

You can watch literally every other team and they have a bigger playbook and more creative plays than we do. The Bucs run the same 5-6 plays over and over.

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

Jags have done the same thing to Lawrence we did to Winston, No mentorship. or guidance from a career backup…Jut throw’em to the wolves. Poor kid gettin slaughtered bigtime. Leftwich might be a good fit for the Jags.

  22. Listnfrmafar Says:

Did either ever develop a QB? I feel bad for Lawrence.

  23. Thomas Edrington Says:

Buc defense could make a LOT of coordinators look better than they are….

  24. SlyPirate Says:

I remember when Monte Kiffin killed the locker room just before the playoffs with such discussions.

IMO it’s bad form by both active coaches and hiring organizations.

  25. Stone crab sam Says:

If b l goes to jax at least he’ll have ownership support for about a week.
By then the Locker room will have imploded again leaving b l to the media wolves. Who are always looking for the latest tidbit.

  26. Listnfrmafar Says:

I remember when Bill Parcels killed to MOJO during the Patriots/GB SB. Parcels didn’t even take the plane back with the team.

  27. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I agree with Thomas Edrington. Coaches do not make players. Great players make coaches.
Tampa has a TON of Talent, that makes most any coach look good.
Bowles fell flat on his face in New York, and fans could not get rid of him fast enough. He even earned the nickname “Toilet Bowles” up there.
He did come up with a good game plan to beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but they were w/o both starting tackles.
His Blitz Happy attack was just what the doctor ordered for any team down their 2 best offensive linemen.
I like Todd Bowels, but wonder if we would be better off with a less blitz happy defensive coordinator ?
Maybe we will find out ?

  28. Darin Says:

    Adios just don’t take Tommy!

  29. Tye Says:

It would be refreshing to go for an innovative OC to compliment the talent this team has…

  30. DoooshLaRue Says:

So the Jags pay for the interviewees travel right?
TPA to JAX and you knock both your minority requirements out?

    That’s just smart bizness!

  31. Austin Says:

Bowles ain’t going nowhere, we threw the bag at him for DC and he’s the next HC after Bruce

  32. Anonymous Says:

Despite the “expert” analysis below they won a SuperBowl, won a Division and are ranked among the best offenses in the NFL statistically. Could it be they know more about coaching football than you?

  35. Greg Says:

This is the usual late season talk when there are HC vacancies and a successful team has candidates. Happens every season. I believe I am correct in saying a coach cannot make a lateral move to another team. Example TB would not be able to be a DC elsewhere unless he for example was given the DC and asst HC which happens all the time.

    And yet…

  37. Anthony Says:

History has shown coaches who agree to a new job with another team while in the playoffs tend to not prepare for playoffs as well

  38. Listnfrmafar Says:

Jags are sniffing around BL & Bowles because they saw Brady techniques.

  39. tvan101 Says:

Does anyone think Leftwhich will be a good head coach without Brady on a team lacking in talent like the dumpster fire jaqs?

  40. Gerinda Says:

Bucs coaches need to stay in Tampa!!!
