Bucs Scored On The Famous “Packers Sweep”

December 13th, 2021

Influenced Bucs touchdown.

When Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians was in high school and a star quarterback at York (Pa.) High School, Vince Lombardi was still coaching.

In fact, in high school, it’s very likely Arians watched Green Bay Packers games on TV and perhaps even watched Lombardi’s Packers win the first two Super Bowls. Who knew at the time Arians, in another century, would be lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy winning a Super Bowl?

Back in the 1960s, Lombardi’s offense was anchored by what is known as the famed “Packers Sweep” or the “Green Bay Sweep.” Some just call it a power sweep.

Lombardi ran that play over and over and over again each and every game. And why not when he had two Hall of Fame running backs and three Hall of Fame offensive linemen. How could it not work?

You’ve probably seen the famous video clip of Lombardi diagraming the play on a blackboard and saying, “What we are trying to get is a seal here, and a seal here, and try to run this play in the alley.”

Well, it seems Arians reached back into his youth to use a play made famous by Lombardi. Per former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, Playoff Lenny’s 48-yard run yesterday was the old Packers Sweep.

Schartz broke down the play and just couldn’t believe how well every Bucs player blocked. Schwartz even gave Tyler Johnson props for his block.

Fun stuff below.

Sounds like Lombardi’s version of the infamous “Benn’d Around”, but more successful than the latter.

  2. Bird Says:

A thing of beauty. Commented on it earlier

    KISS!

  4. Swampbuc Says:

The whole OL and Gronky and our WRs, and Lenny, all give me the warms.

on that play I lost my voice, and never got it back. FANTASTIC play

  6. 1sparkybuc Says:

If I remember correctly Lombardi’s Redskins played the Bucs in a preseason game the week that he died.

Joe scared the neighbor’s dogs so bad on that play they damn near ran away.

Lombardi died in 1970. The Bucs, of course, were born six years later. You may be thinking of George Allen.

    That guy needs braces

    Love Schwartz’s pointer… LOL
That play is a beauty.. almost looks easy…

  13. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

You couldn’t draw it up any better…against a very good defense….. but NONE of our linemen are all-pros, Gotcha.

  14. BigPoppaBuc Says:

This offensive line is absolutely killing it right now. Best in the NFL and Gronk is the x-factor. Knocking on everything wood for their health because they are the #1 key another Super Bowl.

  15. tbbucs101 Says:

That looked like the run that Lenny got the “tuddy” in the Super Bowl.

  16. Bird Says:

    Joe
I thought you are at all games ? Well home games ? No ?
Joe’s changed things up since the pandemic. Joe goes to some games, not to others. Joe was actually at the Colts game. Without locker room access, the value of being there is diminished for Joe’s purposes.–Joe

  17. Cannon Says:

Imagine being that safety that came up on ol’ Donnie Smith…

  18. Medicated Pete Says:

Pete ate 36 buffalo wings yesterday & just came out of a coma

  19. Tampabaybuscfan Says:

Look at the fat boy, 76, run…..didn’t know Donnie had that in him….great job.

  20. Listnfrmafar Says:

Pete, Beasely goes to the same dentist Lombardi did, Straham is in charge of their marketing.

  21. ClodHopper Says:

    Very interesting.

  22. Medicated Pete Says:

    @Listnfrmafar

Pete’s gonna dig that guy up from his grave and throw some braces on his mouth

  23. cmurda Says:

Beautiful play. Was it just me or did Tyler Johnson get a little too grabby after making the nice block.

  24. cmurda Says:

LOL WalkdaPlank @ The Benn’d Around. That lives in infamy around these parts.

  25. Bird Says:

Why do you soak your wings in meth for flavor?

  26. Bird Says:

Dang joe – that was just a curious question. All good i guess

  27. 1sparkybuc Says:

@Joes, Not George Allen either. I just remember the HC of some team died the week his team played a preseason game in the old Tampa Stadium. Did we host NFL games before we actually got a team?…..preseason I mean. The reason Lombardi stuck with me, was he never actually got to coach the Redskins as I recall. The team came down to Tampa without him. Obviously I am old and not remembering the facts clearly, but I know it wasn’t a movie.

  28. Joe Says:

I thought you are at all games ? Well home games ? No ?

Not all this year. Ira and Joe have gone to a few. Until the NFL changes its COVID policy there is no reason to go to games. You get more info from TV and radio. Reporters are not allowed in the locker room and cannot have one-on-one conversations with players. We can do everything with Zoom. Joe and Ira will go the playoff games.

  29. David Says:

I annoyed my son by pausing and rewinding and showing him all that blocking just like this video!! LOL.
As soon as it happened I saw Gronk, Wirfs, Smith and the pulling guards and just said WOW! that was just textbook

  30. webster Says:

That run was basically the same run they did in the superbowl. Great call by BL

  31. Daryl Green Says:

Well great play. I’m not excited about our run game.
Some fans should really watch our run game as whole.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Reminds me of the early Madden game, a pro-set sweep, just from shotgun instead of under center. It’s a play that has been around for a long time.

  33. Hodad Says:

We only ran it one time. Should’ve run it more going both sides.
