Bruce Arians: Resting Players = Hurt Feelings

December 28th, 2021

Bucco Bruce Arians

Nobody can say Bucco Bruce Arians is a man disconnected from the psychological aspect of coaching.

A rust-versus-rest question was lobbed at Arians today during his team-sponsored chat knows as The Bruce Arians Show.

The Bucs are battling for the No. 1 overall seed, but that’s a longshot and it is possible their Week 18 game (after Sunday against the Jets) will have little meaning.

So would Arians potentially rest players in Week 18 against Carolina at The Licht House?

He delivered a unique answer.

“The [No. 1 seed] bye week is better — because you can’t rest everybody in [Week 18]; who do you choose?” Arians began. “So now you hurt somebody’s feelings. ‘We’re going to rest these two guys but we’re not going to rest you.’

“‘Well I’m hurt. you know, I need to rest, too,’ Arians said, mimicking a player’s likely response. “So it’s better to let’s go play. Let’s win and go play the next one.”

Thought-provoking take there from Arians. Not every coach would be concerned with the mentality of players pushed into playing in Week 18 while more important players, or those judged to have more important injuries, sit the game out.

Joe thinks Arians’ caring about his team’s psyche to this level speaks to a big reason he’s been so successful.

    Well add another body to the game day casualty list:

    Jamel Dean has been added to the Covid-19 Reserve list.

  2. SB Says:

    I wonder how many of our players will end up on the Glorified Flu list now that we just played the Panthers.
    SMDH.

  3. PassingThru Says:

    Omicron is highly contagious. In the postseason, the team that lives in an isolated bubble (like in a remote hotel), away from family and friends will vastly improve their chances of staying alive.

  4. Beeej Says:

    I’ll bet Brady makes his wife and kids get tested everyday

  5. SB~LV Says:

    Glad to see the Big Dawg laying down the law, all due respect to TB for his leadership and contributions on and off the field, on and behind the scenes. It is still BA’s team and this is his role as THE LEADER!
    Great chemistry is rising to the top. It’s been a very sloppy year and the One and Done time is on the horizon. It is all about winning games in the playoffs.

  6. captivajim Says:

    If we can build a big lead by halftime;; I still say its time to rest starters who are playing hurt. for the second half .. Better to give the back-up/dept players chance to play in game conditions now,,, with playoffs 3 wks away..

    that # 1 seed evaporated with the loss to WFT. As we win out from here-
    we still need other teams to loose to get #2 seed–which would get us at least 2 home games..

    a SB win will do wonders for all those hurt feelings..

  7. Bojim Says:

    Covid’s not gone yet so it might be real. 🙄

  8. orlbucfan Says:

    I’m more worried about players coming down with Omicron than I am the seeding. That virus variant is NASTY, real NASTY compared to the original Covid strain.

  9. ClodHopper Says:

    Last year it sure seemed like the late bye was a real advantage for us in the playoffs. This year we got an earlier bye. We don’t need to sit anyone but giving everyone a light day would be helpful. Maybe guys on the oline dont need to play every single snap. Maybe Brady dont need to throw it 45 times or RoJo run it 28 times.

    I think BA knows how to handle this. He’s proven many times how well he has a pulse on the team.

  10. PanhandleBuc Says:

    Time to quarantine all 53!

  11. JimBuc2 Says:

    Covid smovid. Put on you big boy pants and play to win. Sheeze, we’re all over this sh!tshow.
    Go Bucs!

  12. sasquatch Says:

    Like it or not, testing positive means you go on the list. That’s league protocol for a reason. 800K+ Americans have died… Healthy, highly trained athletes may not be the ones to get sick, but they can pass it to vulnerable family and friends, and become vectors for spread in the community. There’s a reason for caution when someone tests positive. We’re all sick of it, but continuing to pretend it’s not something to be concerned about is burying your head in the sand.

  13. unbelievable Says:

    I like this approach.

    You don’t have to necessarily sit anyone out of the entire game… but there’s a lot of vets could play a few snaps and then be done.

  14. crazyBucs_CL Says:

    BA was/is a big promoter of vaxx/booster. Not sure of his knowledge on the field of virology, but never the less now that his players listen to him, what he is going to tell them and/or do to keep them playing and not losing money cause “a test is telling them: “You are sick; but I don’t feel anything!!: you don’t but dictator Fauci know what is good for you, shut up and quarantine;”
    what a mess; people still fooled; people still tricked.

  15. Marine Buc Says:

    Maybe Brady should be added to that “Covid list”… I believe we can still beat the Jets with BG at QB.

  16. orlbucfan Says:

    Brady hasn’t tested positive for Covid. He won’t either. He and Giselle make so much coin they could quarantine at the French Riviera.

  17. crazyBucs_CL Says:

    @”..800K+ Americans have died..”
    ————–
    Numbers, numbers, they really scare you. They are mend to… :
    Let put some more numbers:
    Till end of November – yearly –
    385,000 people died in US 2020 (C-19;no vaxx yet)
    386,000 people died in US 2021 (C-19; higher and vaxxed/booster !!!!! why!!!)
    ~~~
    599,600 people died in US 2019 (from cancer ONLY)
    659,000 people died in US 2019 (from heart ONLY)
    38,000 people died in US 2019 (car accident)
  18. Tampabaybucfsn Says:
    BA has Covid
  19. Phx Bucs Fan Says:
    @crazyBucs_CL – You should wipe the orange Kool-Aid off your face. It’s beginning to stain.
  20. Jeagan1999 Says:
    Coach Arians has tested positive.
    Hope he is asymptotic and feeling well! Get back soon coach!
  21. crazyBucs_CL Says:
    2017 – 2.84 million US mortality rate.
    44% (heart and cancer), that leave us with 1.6 million deaths from other causes.
    It was NOT C-19 in 2017.
    2020 – 2.76 million US mortality rate.
    So less than 2017.
  22. The Beer Whisperer Says:
    This seems like a good problem to have.
    Already in the playoffs, deciding which players to rest, (the most) or not.
    I think a happy median, can easily be reached.
    Limiting snap counts to whoever the Bucs deem necessary, or not playing at all.
    The bosses usually decide these things. Hopefully, they know what’s best.
  23. Rico210 aka wutdaBucisthis Says:
    Coach BA test positive
    Coach Harold leading team
  24. CChead Says:
    BA positive
    SMB positive
  25. sasquatch Says:
    @crazy-
    You can’t compare a new contagious virus to cancer or heart disease any more than you can compare it to road fatalities. Why? Because it’s contagious—apparently just like stupidity in the MAGAmedia/orange-conspiracy cult.
    Also, deaths among vaccinated are far lower than among the unvaccinated, so you pre-vax/post-vax numbers are irrelevant. It shows the virus was more deadly in 2021, skewing heavily towards those that didn’t vax. It kinda underscores the need to take this Shute seriously.
    Anyway, the orange koolaid brain damage is too strong for reasonable arguments to make a difference… carry on in your death cult.
  26. Colin in Canada Says:
    He was coughing a lot on that presser the other day. Covid
  27. Bird Says:
    Sasquatch
    Haha. Look at the hypocrite. You get triggered by lesco brandon and have to call him out almost daily
    But MAGAmedia/orange-conspiracy cult is all good
    Pacific Northwest . Not a surprise
  28. Listnfrmafar Says:
    OMG really, these guys are pro’s and many have played on other teams. Forfeit the game and rest the entire team.
  29. Buffalo54 Says:
    Don’t do anything stupid,just take the time to Heal!
  30. Stone crab sam Says:
    Sasquatch, how dare you spreading logic to the maga crowd! They will have none of that😬
  31. SlyPirate Says:
    Rest Order
    1. Rest injured players
    2. Rest the most players with most logged plays
    3. Start guys in contract years (this is a benefit)
  32. Aceofaerospace Says:
    Man I just love our coach. Imagine a combination of BA’s record and John McKays one liners. How awesome would that be? You young whippersnappers have no idea what you missed.
    But MAGAmedia/orange-conspiracy cult is all good
    It’s all good because it’s accurate. MAGA/Orangeface/conspiracies … definitely a cult.
  34. Wesley Says:
    @bird @sasquatch – you’re both sheep
  35. sasquatch Says:
    @crazy-
    Your total US death count for 2020 is (conveniently) off by ~600K… Must’ve gotten your data from FuxNooz or some other “reliable” source.
    The number is 3,358,814, which is about 500K higher than 2019. Those numbers come from the CDC, which is a reliable source unless you’re a deranged conspiracy lunatic.
  36. Wild Bill Says:
    What a PITA! I came down with the virus this week. Really sucks Mostly mild symptoms except for severe shortness of breath. Been down since Christmas eve. Feel pretty good first thing in the morning then extreme fatigue. Could be worse so not complaining. It is what it is. Ya I had all three jabs which is probably why I have a relatively mild case. Main symptoms is the fatigue.
  37. theghost Says:
    @sasquatch is as pathetic as the idiots they argue with
  38. Boston Tommy Says:
    Looks like all the wacky wack jobs showed up in full force today!!
  39. sasquatch Says:
    @theghost-
    I’m just sharing facts with the alternative facts clownshow.
  40. tvan101 Says:
    @Sasquatch so then I take your upset that even with a vax and treatments the current administration is doing worse then the orange man?
  41. sasquatch Says:
    @tvan101-
    We can’t help you if you refuse vaccination and masks. This administration has bent over backwards to help people, but the Orangeman cult refuses. Thanks for nothing, unvaccinated boobs.
