Bruce Arians Explains Why He’s Ditching Full Wednesday Practices

December 16th, 2021

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians

Even though the Bucs are playing their 14th game Tuesday night, they are still learning as is every other NFL team.

Learning how to deal with a 17-game schedule.

The NFL’s first 17-game schedule may hit the Bucs harder than most. The Bucs have an older roster and they played into February of this year. So their offseason healing time was much shorter than for most teams.

Former NFL suit Michael Lombardi said if he were a coach or still a GM of a team, he would go to his line coaches — the guys in the trenches would be affected the most by the 17th game — and tell coaches to find a way for each starting lineman to play five snaps a game less. If that meant a guy would have to sit out a series or rotate in during a series, so be it.

Lombardi’s reasoning is a ballpark figure of snaps an offense/defense will play each game is 60 snaps. If you can save 80 snaps over 16 games that works out to less than 5 snaps or less a game. Then the player would enter the 17th game absorbing less wear and tear than previous seasons.

Joe is certain every NFL team is or has been tinkering with practices or snaps to adjust to the extra game. Bucco Bruce Arians is doing the same.

Last week Arians only had a walk-through rather than a normal full practice on Wednesday. He repeated that yesterday and said after practice that Wednesday practices the rest of the season will likely be walk-throughs.

“Well, at this time of the year, there [are] only so many reps left in their bodies, and we don’t need to come out here and go two hours on a Wednesday and run around. We can get just as much done mentally. It’s pretty much all mental at this time of the year anyway.”

Smart move by Arians.

Hey, it’s Dec. 16. Nine days from Christmas. If the players don’t know what’s going on by now, the Bucs have bigger problems than having walk-throughs on Wednesdays.

Like Arians said last week, the goal now, outside of winning games, is to make sure players can get on the field.

    Hmm.

Worst tackling team in the league and a team that gives it up like a cheap hooker in the 4th quarter (see Bills, Colts, WTFs games for starters).

The method has produced 10-3 thanks to the offense. Maybe the defense needs to be given some endurance conditioning work rather than walk throughs. Seeing our D get pile driven reminds me of the 2008 collapse when the Panthers and Raiders ran over us like we were a girls’ flag football team.

Kamara and Hill are ready to run over our D. Walking around doesn’t seem like an especially great preparatory method to stop a human joystick and a battering ram.

And I also agree that I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Saints defense didn’t come bounty hunting for Brady.

Lots of forces working against the Bucs.

  2. Mike C Says:

    Hahahaha

  3. Francisco Guzman Says:

I don’t know who BA is kidding with when it comes to AB. The guy’s going nowhere. If you release him he will likely end up with a contender even a team like green bay.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Urban Meyer is fired because he kicked a kicker?

Since when are you not allowed to kick some worthless kicker? These millennial cupcakes would have tried to get Dirk fired for letting Chris Baker yell at the kicker.

    Grow a set, laddies.

It is funny, and I don’t care about Meyer at all, but I really hate snitches and whiners, and some worthless kicker crying because the coach kicked him in the rear because he missed a kick, give me a break you loser.

  5. August 1976 Buc Says:

Rod, you know how it is, you need to be a winner like Parcells. Anyone remember when WR Wayne Chrebet had a ankle injury of some kind, and during practice one day B Parcells walks and steps all over Chrebets ankle, lol just to make sure he was actually injured.
And Bill kept right on Coaching because he had a couple of Lombardis and would win games.
Pretty Simple, Urban had a bunch of drama for much of the year AND a sorry LOSING record.
So it is “C YA Urban” in Jax.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Again, I don’t care about him one way or another, but to say the guy isn’t a winner? LOL! He’s in his rookie year with a very bad team, Parcells wouldn’t be doing anything with this team either at this point.

Also, I’m going to guess, Parcells hit or punched someone at some point. I can’t wait for all the cupcakes to come out soon and talk about how their coach once slapped them, and now they need monies for the emotional and physical abuse, because that’s what this stuff is always about.

It’s entertaining, that’s for sure, but I still can’t stand the fake TikTok level drama that comes with the fake news St Pete Times just trying to get someone fired because they can’t sell a paper if their lives depending on it, so they just lead a public lynching and think that will somehow get people to spend $0.25 on a paper, not that I have any idea what that trash cost nowadays.

  7. BucfaninMi Says:

If I get hit or kicked at work, we’re gonna have some problems.

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

Smart move by BA to try and preserve the team moving into December with the playoffs in the cross-hairs.

Never liked Urban as a college coach and couldn’t care less about his firing!

  9. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

What time is kickoff Tuesday night Joe? I gotta work but maybe I’ll get home in time to watch the fourth quarter. I’ll be up and refreshed for the Wednesday morning game though.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Swampbuc … ‘The method has produced 10-3 thanks to the offense.” Bullspit

Rod … ‘Urban Meyer is fired because he kicked a kicker?’ How about because he’s a horrible NFL coach instead.

Bucsfanman … Agreed. Smart move by BA.

  11. Teflon Don Says:

    @swampbuc please STFU pure BS

  12. DG060 Says:

I noticed that too Jaymiss. Tuesday night game. Little unusual eh?

  13. Eddie Marz Says:

I like BA’s thinking. You can skip a practice on Wednesday but you better show up on Sunday. As far as Antonio Brown. You can’t release him. He’ll be picked up by a contender in a minute. GOBUCS!

  14. Listnfrmafar Says:

First off, if BA waited until after AB’s suspension to cut him, that would be a real d#$k move and the team would know it. I understand the whole rest player philosophy but this team does not play a 60 minute game so conditioning and discipline are clearly issues. Conditioning issues lead to injuries. I don’t know the answer but they ain’t winning another SB if you can’t play 60 minutes.

  15. crazyBucs_CL Says:

“..Bruce Arians.. Why He’s Ditching Full Wednesday Practices..”
    —————————-
Because he is done; The only thing his mind understand is REST. That explains a lot, why we have NOT finish yet, a full 60 min game.

  16. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I have long felt that a 16 game schedule was too much for even professional athletes. The human body has its limits. However, I was probably wrong all of these years. Today’s sports science is demonstrating otherwise.

Bruce Arians is showing wisdom in fine tuning his approach. I have faith that he and his staff know what they are doing. The “proof of the pudding” will only be manifested in a second Lombardi in a row as far as we fans are concerned.

    Go Bucs!

  17. bucsfan951 Says:

if my boss thinks they can kick me while I am at work, we have big issues. Some people on here think since this is football, you have carte blanche to do what ever smh

in the great words of the great Billy Madison, “that’s assault, brother”

  18. Rod Munch Says:

    bucsfan951 – it’s not work, it’s playing a game for a living.

If people actually think the NFL would be better if it was like working in a cubical – you’re just not very with it.

  19. bucsfan951 Says:

    rod

i guess since its a game, its ok to kick someone.

want to play some chess with me?…

  20. unbelievable Says:

Smart move… except how do walk throughs make us stop being the team with THE MOST MISSED TACKLES in the entire league?

  21. Stone crab sam Says:

I feel for the next jag head coach. Because the locker room knows if anyone snivels, the head coach will take the heat, rendering any new head coach ball less and walking on eggshells from the get go.
I can hear it already: coach I left my tampons at home and I have a headache. I need to take the day off and go to the beach😁

  22. TampabayDJ82 Says:

TO THE CRYBABY FAN’S – Bucs have the BEST RECORD IN THE NFL !! Why/how do you STILL feel the need to PICK APART EVERY THING THAT’S WRONG ?? We just played one of the best teams in football , they can’t blow everyone out by 40 points a game !! STOP COMPLAINING AND ENJOY THE REST OF THE SEASON , BECAUSE YOU MIGHT NOT “EVER” SEE IT AGAIN !! There’s teams out there that have NEVER BEEN TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME LET ALONE WIN THE SUPER BOWL AND HAVE A GREAT CHANCE OF REPEATING !! YOU ALL MUST BE THE FAN’S THAT DIDN’T WATCH THE BUCS GAMES PRE-BRADY !! ALMOST 20 YEARS OF CRAPPY TEAMS !! I STILL WATCHED THEM ALL , AND THE GAMES THAT WERE BLACKOUT I LISTENED TO IT ON THE RADIO .. GO BUCS AND GO WATCH THE NBA OR SOMETHING TO ALL YOU FAKE FAN’S

    ———-

    YES

Have you ever played football? Jesus Christ you millennials are such cupcakes. You don’t think Bruce Arians, a guy who learned from Ray Perkins, never slapped some stupid kicker around? I get it, at your Taco Bell job, your boss doesn’t call you a $@#@–!@# @#@ !@#%%@ot, but that’s because you don’t matter, when you mess up a order, everyone else working on your shift doesn’t lose hundreds of thousands of dollars.

    Get with it.

  24. Bucsfan951 Says:

    @rod

Bud, your last comment couldn’t be farther from the truth but since you said it, you obviously believe it. At a rip age of 38, trust me, I am farther along and more successful in my life than what you were at this age.

Anyways, you kick someone, weather it’s in “a game” or on the field, you deserved to get dropped. It’s that simple. I would imagine you would feel the same way if I kicked you, weather on the field or during work.

So stop trying to act like a tough guy behind that keyboard.

Check out the alpha male defending assault. Probably thinks it’s okay to slap his wife if she’s asking for it or punch a student in the face if he talks back.
