Tom Brady Is Getting Faster

November 10th, 2021

Sometimes there’s only one way to truly know the facts.

For some NFL stuff, that comes only via official NFL NextGen Stats, the data spit out via technology embedded in players’ uniforms and equipment.

Plenty about football has nothing to do with NextGen tracking, but Joe is a fan of a lot of their numbers, including “Time To Throw.”

“Time to Throw” measures the average amount of time elapsed from snap to throw on every pass attempt for a quarterback (sacks excluded). Tom Brady now sits second in the NFL at 2.50 seconds in “Time To Throw,” meaning he’s getting the ball out very quickly.

Think about it. Brady is getting incredible pass protection yet still is getting rid of the football faster than just about everyone.

Impressive. And speaks to Bucs receivers getting open, as well.

Veteran Bucs offensive linemen often speak of how quickly Brady unloads the ball.

Arians quarterbacks have long had among the quickest triggers. Arians’ true QB love, Blaine Gabbert, led the NFL at 2.42 seconds during his five starts in 2017 under Arians. And Carson Palmer was at 2.49 in “Time To Throw” during the 2016 season, the first year the stat was tracked. Ben Roethlisberger, Arians’ former student in Pittsburgh, is the only guy ahead of Brady this season at 2.38 seconds.

(America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, averaged 2.77 seconds in “Time To Throw” during his final Bucs season, a full quarter second longer than Brady is now.)

Elite pocket movement and awareness before a quick-trigger throw, that’s Tom Brady.

Brady’s “Time To Throw” is ever slightly faster this season versus last year, and Joe sees that as a sign that Brady is playing more freely within the offense.

The ability of the bucs recievers to beat man coverage is the biggest reason. He won multiple titles with just one guy who could beat man consistently. In Tampa he has at least three on any given play. His last year with NE, he had nobody who could get open, and played with a bad knee. With recievers of this caliber, it’s relatively easy for Tommy.

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

He needs to get rid of ball faster b/c Donovan Smith isn’t getting as much HELP as he did last season by RB & TE. So Brady is in a complete panic as soon as the ball is snapped

  3. Buccaneric Says:

Joe, publish a few throwback posts from last year at this time. Put some things in perspective for Pete.

  4. D-Rome Says:

Excellent article Joe and excellent comment by Ben Green. You’re right about Brady’s last year in New England.

  5. Devin DiPalma Says:

Pete doesn’t need perspective. He needs a better mentality. No our team isn’t perfect but if you can’t enjoy being a bucs fan the last year, then when will you enjoy it?

  6. Swampbuc Says:

Big Ben can’t throw it out of his shadow so all his throws are the quick dink and dunk.

  7. Mort Says:

How you gonna say a “full quarter second”. A quarter of a second is by it’s very nature as a form of measurement not a “full” anything. Quarter negates full.

  8. Mike C Says:

Trolling the super bowl champ must be a herculean effort even among trolls T max, Bravo sir, keep up the hard work lol.

  9. Stanglassman Says:

I realize this article is about throwing speed but one of my favorite interviews with Tom was when he was giving a presser after a game and he scrambled for a first down. When ask about it he said ‘I felt fast, did I look fast?” to the question. That’s really funny.

  10. Mike C Says:

Ben Green has something to say about NE and nobody cares…….

  11. #8 Says:

Is Ben Green short for Benjarvus Green?

  12. JimmyJack Says:

Chalk it up to great coaching and a great QB running it. Its a match made in heaven.

  13. Chris l Says:

I also think he is faster running this year too! He said he would be haha

  14. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Mike C do you even know who tmax is???? Never saw you posting before he was banned. Just because a few up here say Med Pete is him don’t believe them. tmax was a belligerent and hateful individual, Pete isn’t just misguided by his medicated brain. Totally different writing style from tmax

  15. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

Everytime I check this slog and see Medipetes post… Its time to throw up🤢🤮

  16. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Wow on the mod squad 2 days later!

  17. Medicated Pete Says:

    Stop bullying me says Pete

  18. Ben green Says:

Leave my friend medicated Pete alone. Can’t we all just get along? Any opinion on here, other than the bucs are awesome, is met with inane criticism and personal attacks. Pete and Ben have feelings. Mine are especially sensitive. Every time y’all call Ben a troll, it’s shakes me to my very core. Sometimes it’s hard to get up in the morning. Keep the hate flowing. The prophet is always scorned in his own time. # leave Pete alone. Love Ben

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

I’m sure the MASTERMIND has everything to do with this.
Please give credit where it is due.

BTW, you can’t use the T word without getting moderated.
Been that way for quite some time.
I also get it for the little w too.

  20. Miller5252 Says:

Joe, I think you need to do a poll asking how many different accounts Pete has. I’ve gotta guess about 6 by now, but I’ve only been here a few years now.

  21. geno711 Says:

Congrats to Arians and that stat. The facts suggest many of his QB’s get rid of the ball quicker than their counterparts. More evidence of good coaching and more evidence that his no risk it no biscuit offense is not about throwing the ball deep all the time but really is about risking the deep throw when it is there.

BTW Mort I clearly understood the reference to a full quarter second.

You certainly can measure things in any interval. Quarter seconds is the measure that Joe choose to use for reference in this article.

Actually it was more than a full quarter second. It was .27 of a second instead of .25 of a second but it worked for this article.

  22. David Says:

If it’s a little faster from the beginning of the year I would venture to guess it’s because they have been doing more wide receiver screens and more dump offs to Lenny.

    Unlike Ignorant Crackhead Petey….

That is simply because Brady is reading things and knowing where to go quicker, it has nothing to do with poor pass protection. Anyone who watches them and other teams can tell you they’re probably one of the best pass protecting O lines in the entire NFL.

  23. Medicated Pete Says:

Bruce Arians is on SiriusXM NFL Radio right now on the show “Late Hits” with Tom Pelissero as the host & Bruce sounds HAMMERED

  24. Medicated Pete Says:

……this is a real problem with Bruce. I’m not messing around. Listen to him right now. Maybe that’s why the players have shut him out & have no discipline

  25. Swampbuc Says:

Pete — I think you’re funny. Your last two posts are as if a dead hammerhead shark made them.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

My take on Pete is it’s always doom and gloom for no damn reason….to the point I’m going to skip over his posts pretty soon.

Mike C…you’re right…no one cares about Ben Green and his Patriots posts. LOL as if we care about that cheatin’ franchise.

  27. Oneilbuc Says:

Buc1987. Don’t say that remember Brady played for that cheating franchise and he became yall goat because of the cheating that went on remember ???

  28. TampabayDJ82 Says:

MORT – YOUR THE IDIOT !! Joe should have you removed from this site . First of all , obviously Joe wasn’t planning on having a ROCKET 🚀 SCIENTIST make a comment about his phrase ! We’re talking football here , not talking about what PHASE THE MOON IS AT !! Get a life or go tell NASA what they should have done different with the HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE !! DORK

  29. Listnfrmafar Says:

Does anyone really believe Arians has anything to do with Brady’s throwing speed? He is more.in sync with his receivers plain and simple, knowing where they are is better than guessing.

  30. Buccaneer4life Says:

Good stuff but wait… Who did you call America’s quarterback?

  31. Ne+ bucs fan Says:

    No opinions are wrong 😉

  32. Jerry Finley Says:

Medicated Pete, Saying Brady is in a complete panic as soon as the ball is snapped is completely wrong and stupid as well. Brady is leading the league in most offensive categories. Complete panic is really “cool under fire”. Him and his receivers are on the same page due to his meticulous attention to detail. He brought six Super Bowl rings with him to Tampa. That’s something that commands respect and they know if they listen and follow his lead, he has enough experience to properly guide the team to the Super Bowl. Obviously with ring number seven, they bought in and it worked. Just as it’s working this year, now let’s come off the bye week and run the table like we did last year! C’mon AB, heal up and get back on the field. We need you badly in the season end run to SB #2(8)!
