Test Drive For Carlton Davis

November 24th, 2021

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

It was a piece of really good news earlier today when the Bucs announced their top cornerback Carlton Davis had entered a 21-day period where he could practice and be activated at any time.

Davis has been on injured reserve and had not played since the win at New England in early October. With fellow starting corner Sean Murphy-Bunting also out for much of the same period, it showed and may have cost the Bucs a win or two in the tight race for postseason homefield advantage.

The Bucs will break out the pads in practice tomorrow and Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians said he will give Davis a test to see how ready he is. Arians cautioned it might be a stretch to expect him to be game-ready by Sunday.

“Yeah, we’ve got to see how it goes,” Arians said. “If he hasn’t re-injured [himself] — he’s got to go full-speed. He’ll get a bunch of scout-team work and try to get acclimated and see where it goes.”

The big concern is, of course, the quad injury to Devin White. He suffered the injury in the final plays Monday night, Arians said. A quad injury is what put Davis on the shelf. Those things are nasty.

Depending on the severity, White may miss a week or could be out weeks. Arians didn’t act or sound as if it’s a major injury but Joe isn’t sure if that is just gamesmanship on Arians’ part.

“We’ve played without Devin [White],” Arians said. “If Devin can’t play, Kevin [Minter] will step in and do a hell of a job.”

Kevin Minter isn’t a bad ballplayer but he’s not White. Let’s not get carried away here.

This stinks because the Bucs played Monday (with SMB back in the lineup) much more like the Bucs defense we were accustomed to seeing, not the slop in New Orleans and Washington.

Minter is good, he just doesn’t have that closing speed like White does. I can’t think of the game. Maybe it was against Washington in the playoffs, anyway, Minter was barreling down against the qb, who scrambled (Henicke?) and was just not able to get him. I remember thinking, dang, if we had Devin, that’s a sack… Wentz can scramble, but, I don’t think anyone is worried a whole lot.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Wentz probably doesn’t scramble much, but his 18 yd scramble against Buffalo in the 2nd qtr gave the Colts a 1st down when they had a 3rd-and-10. Plays like that hurt.

  3. BuucccNASTY he p Says:

Rest him till he’s better, it’s January that matters at this point. But with how weee playing this year home field has been important too

  4. SOEbuc Says:

No sh!t he’s no Devin White but Minter is a damn fine backup LB that’s underrated by many. A downhill hitter so he’s great as a backup against the run.

  5. PassingThru Says:

Quad strains most of all affect your cutting ability. The rehab period sounds open-ended, but at least they’re talking game to game. I’d like to see Minter start rather than turn this injury into something far worse.

  6. Will Says:

Sucks he got hurt have to actually wonder why the hell was he still in the game at that point anyway. Dumb move and I hope it’s nothing serious.

  7. David Says:

No one should start complaining about why someone is in at the end of the game… That is what they have done since BA took over as head coach. He does not believe in pulling players out 99% of the time. I have no problem with that.

It did not seem like it was too serious though.

    This game I see
    Suh, Vea(or Nacho), Gholston
With Shaq and Tryon on the edges
    All day.
    LVD spying Taylor all day.

Take him away and Wentz is in for a long day.

  8. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

I think we have gotten starters hurt after games have been over a couple of times now… Geo comes to mind. I don’t remember the coach who loves to call people out for being “Stupid” calling himself out for those two unnecessary injuries! Just saying, his condemnation will soon ring hollow.

  9. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

I was chided for pointing out how often I have to look at pictures of the coach beneficiary of Tom Brady’s presence. I was told it was because the article was about him. This one is about a star player, and Still penalizes us with yet another picture of coach Bruce.

  10. Sparky Says:

Carlton had a “quad injury” right? I don’t think I ever saw anything more specific. What exactly happened that would take this long to get better? A tear?

  11. Austin Says:

I’ll never forgive you for putting CD3 on special teams brucs, unaccounted

  12. Austin Says:

One thing I’ve noticed about this team this year, players getting hurt during junk time, or doing things they aren’t accustomed to. Bruce needs to be MUCH better at player safety so we stop negligent injuries. Devin white shouldn’t of been in the game, every 22 person spot should of been a backup. If you pull brady, you pull everyone

  13. Merlin Says:

Austin, name the teams who do that. While you’re at it, name the teams who don’t have any starters on special teams

  14. TampabayDJ82 Says:

Austin – Starters have played on S.T. since since football was founded ! EVERY TEAM has starting players on S.T. and ALWAYS HAVE..
    GO BUCS !!

  15. Austin Says:

Idk of any other team playing their number 1 corner in ST, try again “merlin”
