Quiet Greatness

Chris Godwin

Of all the pass catchers on NFL teams that have played nine games this season, only one guy has more receptions than Chris Godwin.

Yes, Godwin’s 57 catches are that impressive, alongside his four touchdowns and 717 yards receiving.

Godwin is on pace for 107 catches and 1,354 yards this season. So that’s why Joe laughs whenever a national analyst rambles about Brady not trusting his weapons that aren’t nicknamed “Gronk” or “A.B.” Brady won a Super Bowl with Mike Evans and Godwin and threw a ton of balls to them along the way. Of course he’s comfortable with them.

All that matters is 2021, but it is wild to think that Godwin is in a contract year at 25 years old. He will want $20 million a year on a multiyear guaranteed deal from the Bucs. And he’s likely going to get it. The Bucs would be borderline insane to let him walk out of the building.

What a third-round pick!

True that. He can block catch and probably throw if they let him. Worth the 2 or 3 guys it’d take to keep him

  2. Robert Says:

I don’t hear anyone sayin TB doesn’t trust CG.

CG will be gone next year, he deserves to get paid and not sure if we have the dough for it. Wish him the best!

  3. Bobby M. Says:

To keep him, we’ll probably lose JPP and Howard….those two free up at least $10 million in cap space. Howard has never evolved and JPP is accumulating injuries on an annual basis. Its only a matter of time before he has a season ending situation and we’ve overpaid for his services.

Would hate to see JPP go, but it seems as if Father Time is tapping on his blown shoulder.

O.J. Howard? Joe thinks the Bucs may keep him. They will get a helluva discount. Who is going to throw money at him? Thinking the Bucs take a flyer on him for one year hoping he finally gets back to 100 percent.

If it really comes to either/or on Godwin and Howard, the choice is a no-brainer.

  5. VSyl Says:

JPP is a great guy, but his time is passing unfortunately, not worth big money anymore. If he recognizes that, he could stay. Besides that, if Howard gone is also needed for godwin to stay, there’s no need to think, do it.

  6. August 1976 Buc Says:

When BA came, he moved Godwin to the Slot, and his career took off.
Chris will be making generational wealth because of that move.
Good for Chris and his family.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  7. Medicated Pete Says:

The Band breaks-up this off-season. Arians retires & coaches leave. Kyle Trask is QB #1. Jason Licht will be extra sweaty

  8. PassingThru Says:

That’s why the Rams are in deep doo-doo. Woods was their equivalent of Godwin, an excellent WR2 who can add a dimension of blocking that few WRs can equal. You ain’t getting that with OBJ kids.

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

Oh, I’ve been assured that we can keep ME and CG.
I don’t know how that math works out…… but I was assured.

  10. Bobby M. Says:

@Joe…..I don’t think anyone will throw much cash his way initially but a clear path to starting and getting targets will likely be appealing. Realistically, Howard is probably looking at ONE more pay day in his career. He’ll need to be somewhere on a 1-2 yr deal where he can get some production to make that happen. Similar to what Fournette did with us….took a 1 yr deal, played very well and got a bigger 1 yr deal.

  11. Beeej Says:

Each one of them will still be getting a regular paycheck in the year 2037

  12. PassingThru Says:

OJ Howard won’t take much cap space. He’s a blocking TE who still has some pass catching ability. That type of player makes $1 million to $2.5 million per season, not his current $6 million salary.

  13. Robert Says:

joe thinks we keep oj? lol

maybe if he writes them a check. He should have been cut already.

  14. zzbuc Says:

I am an OJ fan, always been….But the truth is he is being used for blocking purposes…..How many reception has he had? Did he drop passes? As long as AB is the head coach, doesn’t make any sense to keep him…. why we would pay him? Just for being an average blocker……And remember next year we will be in cap hell……Hard to say, but I do not se much of a future for OJ in Tampa…..even more…who will be the following players out One Bucs Place? JPP? Suh? Jansen? Gronk? CG is a keeper, no doubt in my mind……

  15. voice of reason Says:

love me some Godwin!! in my estimation, he is one of two players (other is D White) that really balled out Sunday. pay him!

  16. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Chris Godwin is making $15.983 million this year. That ain’t chump change.

I think most people, could get by on that. How much more does he need, lol

  17. FrankPillow Says:

Pound for pound the best football player on this team—and it isn’t even close.

  18. The Beer Whisperer Says:

    Chris Godwin, is that you?

  19. PassingThru Says:

I think there’s going to be turnover among the older vets after this season. JPP and Suh are likely gone, and OJ can only stick around on a cheap contract. Some GM might be tempted to pay OJ for one year at $2.5 million based on his draft pedigree and the hope that this was a recovery year. I don’t think the Bucs should go that high.

I hope Licht signs Godwin, he’s a keeper.

  20. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Can he play guard?

  21. PSL Bob Says:

OJ’s offside penalty on the 1st play of the game is not the result of any lingering injury. There’s just no reason to keep him on board any longer. He was one of those not to atypical situations where a steal in the draft turns out to be a dud on the field. Let’s cut him loose and look for another TE in the draft, one that can actually block and receive and isn’t prone to injuries all the time.

  22. Kent Kleist Says:

I’d rather have him than Evans

  23. JimmyJack Says:

OJ Howard is moving on if he knows whats good for him. Hes never going to be a big part of this offense and if he wants to make a name for himself he needs to find a new team……..You guys can say oh Id pay him this many millions or that many millions……..but its all just make pretend if OJ want to find a new home.

JPP will be a very intresting situation. The best thing is probably let him rest up in his home gym then pluck him off the coach next Nov/Dec, for a stretch run, like we have seen Dwight Freeney and Julius Peppers do…………But then we are talking about JPP. Dude is just wired to love football and maybe he loves Training Camp………It makes sense to pay him as a part time player but maybe he wont accept that. Alls i know is I like JPPs chances of returning much better if Brady stays.

  24. Buczilla Says:

I’m all on board paying Godwin 20 (or more?) million as long as he keeps up this pace and doesn’t miss any time. How many receivers would legitimately start over him in the NFL? Maybe a handful?

  25. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs are going to have a lot players needing to get paid, and I think Godwin is going to be the one they end up having to pass on. I hope I’m wrong, that Licht can perform some magic accounting and keep him, but look at the roster and who needs new deals and tell me how that gets done AND we keep Godwin.
