King Of The Blitz

November 18th, 2021

Blitzer.

Yesterday when Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians rattled off his guys who should be Pro Bowlers, the very first man mentioned on defense was Devin White.

The way Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles likes to blitz White, the third-year inside linebacker from LSU should have a title of nobility — “King of the Blitz.”

Per Pro-Football-Reference.com, no defender has been blitzed more than White. Bowles has sent him after opposing quarterbacks 77 times through nine games, or an average of eight times a game.

The only ones remotely close to White’s number of blitzes are Jerome Baker and Andrew Van Ginkel, both of the Dolphins, with 62 each.

White has eight quarterback hurries, eight quarterback knockdowns, 18 pressures and two sacks.

What does Joe think about all this that he just wrote ?

  2. CleanHouse Says:

    Maybe he should stop blitzing

  3. Bucschamp Says:

It seems other teams know when we are about to blitz. Time to be creative and blitz by surprise

  4. scotthad2 Says:

I don’t care who blitzes. Just stop dropping Barrett and JPP and Tryon back into coverage. Waste of talent there.

I’m a fan of Devin White, but don’t believe he’s had a Pro Bowl-worthy season at all, to this point. He did play much better vs. Washington (I’m so glad Muffler Man fell down on that one “sack” that DW nearly missed), so it gives us hope that he finishes the season strong.

  6. westernbuc Says:

How many games did it take him to get his first sack?

  7. Darin Says:

Best linebacker of all time! Right Devin?

  8. Defense Rules Says:

‘King of the Blitz’ looks to be a double-edged sword. Yes Devin’s blitzed the most in the NFL, but him being used to blitz so much comes at a very high cost.

He’s also be thrown at more than anyone on the team, 49 times in 9 games (about 6 times a game?). And of those, opponents have completed 41 (83.7%), roughly 5 completions allowed per game and also the highest on the team. And oh ya, for 356 yds … again, most on the team for any defender.

PERHAPS he either shouldn’t be used to blitz so much or we need to disguise his blitzes better so opposing QBs can’t take advantage?

  9. Kentucky Buc Says:

Bruce has short term memory loss. He’s had one good game. Yes I think he can be an all pro but not freelancing like he’s done all year. And I don’t buy the Bowles using him in coverage excuse. Not fully. Hopefully he’s turning the corner after last week.

  10. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Wow…There is absolutely NO WAY he makes the Pro Bowl. Blitzing 77 times with only 2 sacks….LMAO! Heck Anthony Nelson has at least one sack that I know of.

  11. Jason Says:

White has eight quarterback hurries, eight quarterback knockdowns, 18 pressures and two sacks.
So on 77 blitzes that’s a success rate of 47 percent? Is that good or bad?

  12. alton d green Says:

Anthony Nelson got a sack? only one? Isn’t his girlfriend a genie? he should sack every play!!

  13. Tamlpabaybucfan Says:

Love Devin White……hasn’t been as effective as last year….partly because our secondary is allowing quick passes…..QBs are finding open receivers before White can get to them.

  14. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I think they should mix up who the blitz is coming from more, but David is much better in coverage than White so maybe they don’t.

  15. Miller5252 Says:

White is better blitzing then coverage and David is better coverage then blitzing. David and his ability to punch out balls works a lot better in coverage then White.

  16. Listnfrmafar Says:

Maybe coaches should teach him how to cover. My biggest concern is how many times they were dropping Vea back in coverage, I would assume it’s when White blitzes. Who knows, maybe Vea was the best choice for corner.

  17. SunkenGardenz Says:

Is it just me or are Devin’s blitzes extremely predictable?

  18. DalvinCookRules Says:

Devin White is AMAZING… When he actually hits you, most of the time he just runs himself out of the play and misses the tackle.

  19. Anonymous Says:

If opposing gb’s complete the pass when white blitzes then the blitz was not successful !!

  20. Swampbuc Says:

It might be nice if one of those blitzes was , you know — actually effective. White is talking too much and not producing enough. Looking like the overhyped player I thought he was when the Bucs drafted him.

  21. unbelievable Says:

2 sacks out of 77 blitzes.

    So much efficiency.
