Bucs O-Line Coach Shares Grades

November 6th, 2021

Guard Ali Marpet

It’s rare to hear internal coaching grades of players coming out of One Buc Palace.

One of those times came in 2016, when head coach Dirk Koetter publicly noted former Bucs guard Kevin Pamphile was the top-graded offensive lineman on the team.

Under most head coaches, players receive a number grade for each game. It’s typically just like in school 0 through 100.

Bucs co-offensive-line coach Harold Goodwin talked about Ali Marpet this week on the Buccaneers Radio Network and noted Marpet’s play is in Pro Bowl form.

“He’s done a great job in the run game as far as getting connected to people, moving people off the line of scrimmage in the run game,” Goodwin began. “He’s done a better of pulling. One of the things I kind of harped on him a little bit was when he pulls he didn’t run through contact. But he’s done a better job of that the past few weeks. …

“For the most part, he’s been I think great now, high 90s or mid 90s [grades] pretty much all season. And to me he’s playing at a Pro Bowl level.”

Goodwin added that Marpet has a bad habit of “bear-hugging” in pass protection versus consistently throwing his hands, and that occasionally will get him pushed back into the pocket. But regardless, Marpet is a dominant force.

Joe still applauds general manager Jason Licht for trading up to grab Marpet, a Division III left tackle, in the 2015 NFL Draft.

In my opinion, Ali Marpet is the best guard the Bucs ever had. He is a top 3 guard in the NFL.

Much love for Marpet. Very underappreciated. The post about a diva WR, that will never be a Buc, has 43 replies. Meanwhile I bet this post about one of the best Bucs, probably won’t have more than ten.

    Sparky,

Are you be you are one of those people on FB that always posts “sad sad story and I bet you won’t share it?”
    🥲

But yeah, Marpet is a great player who always gives 100% and doesn’t get nearly enough credit.
He’s been a rock for us.

Marpet was a real find by Jason Licht, and is for sure one of the best guards in the NFL.
In my opinion, the addition of Jensen at center really gave our entire line a whole new attitude.
Ryan Jensen is an honest to goodness bad ass! He comes from an entire family of Martial Artists, and has studied Tae Kwon Do all his life.
Yes, Ryan Jensen talks sh!t, but he has both the size and the Martial Arts skills to back it up!

Ben fully expected a major injury or two on the o line. They’ve played well, it also helps to have a qb who gets rid of the ball faster than he ever has. Like most of the offense, it’s a a function of the goat. Lineman love to run block, cuz it’s much easier than pass pro. Just mash the guy in front of you. Ben had a teammate in college who’s pass pro got better the more we ran.

    Over half way there. Lol

  7. PassingThru Says:

Marpet was a great pick, but let’s not pretend it was a total stretch. Marpet blew away competition at the Senior Bowl and his tests of athletism were off the charts. The only question was would Marpet go earlier than the projected third or fourth round.

  8. Craig Says:

Marpet has always played at a Pro-Bowl level. He is an absolute beast in the run game too.

  9. NeverGIVEup Says:

You know the OL had a good game when no one has there name called.

You know your a bad Azz OL guy when NO ONE comments on a post about you VS someone that is not even on the team.

    TRUTH

    Pay attention will ya?

  11. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Marpet was great on the right side. I don’t know how he rated in the center. Now he is rated outstanding on the left side as well.

Yes, he was a fabulous pick for us.

got a funny feeling marpet will be a buc for life, and potentially hit the ring of honor one day…

also there recently has become more plaque space available along the coveted strip of honor

i wish joe had little emojis to add in, because there would be a mini banjo next to my post ^^^^^^

  14. Buczilla Says:

Marpet should have been named all pro by now and made multiple pro bowls. He’s our best offensive linemen since Paul Gruber and Tony Mayberry. Pretty sad, but better late than never. 😛

Remember that Licht traded up to get Marpet near the end of the second round, simailar to how he traded up to ensure getting Wirfs in the first. He wanted to be sure both times.
