Jonathan Taylor Vs. Bucs Defense Will Be Special

November 27th, 2021

Fishing to prop O.J. Howard.

Ian Beckles is an old-school football guy.

Joe believes in the perfect Beckles’ football game, you’d have Jim Brown trying to run on the Steel Curtain. Well, those guys aren’t jumping in a time machine and coming back as 25-year olds. So Beckles will take the next best thing.

The former Bucs guard and current sports radio personality said on his podcast “In the Trenches” that Jonathan Taylor playing the Bucs’ run defense is his kind of ball.

“They are going to have to play substantially better than [Monday night] to beat the Colts,” Beckles began. The Colts “may be the hottest team in football along with the New England Patriots.

“Vita Vea has to come back. … They knew they could beat the Giants without Vita Vea. I wouldn’t mess around and try to beat the Colts without Vita Vea. Because I haven’t seen a team run the ball on the Buccaneers in years. So I cannot wait to see the matchup between the Colts and the Buccaneers.

“The Colts don’t give a rat’s arse. They are running the football. They are running the football on everybody.”

After watching the Bucs boat race the Giants on Monday Night Football, Beckles offered these observations:

* On Breshad Perriman:

“[Breshad] Perriman, I did not like some of his routes. He and [Tom] Brady were clearly not on the same page.”

* On the Bucs’ defensive line:

“JPP is not healthy, man. JPP is not healthy. Shaq Barrett plays hard. You know who the best defensive lineman was? It was [Rakeem] Nuñez-Roches. I want to say he instigated a couple of holding penalties. Listen, if you instigate a holding penalty, that’s the same as a sack. I really liked what I saw with Nuñez-Roches of late.”

On how Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is starting to blossom:

“Listen, I have been getting on Joe Tryon-Shoyinka since the beginning of the year because, listen, JPP is not what he was. Shoyinka, when I watched him play before [Monday night] was very timid. A very timid rusher. There was no violence in his rush. He improved three-fold [Monday]. When I watched him I saw violence. I saw somebody playing hard. It wasn’t all result-driven. But it’s going to come. When you see someone playing hard that way and giving all-out effort, the statistics are going to come for sure.”

* On Tom Brady:

“Tom Brady was clearly not scared of that Giants defense. Tom Brady was clearly trying to spread the ball around.

* Touching upon his favorite subject, Beckles offered up back-handed compliments to tight end O.J. Howard.

“It was good to see O.J. Howard catch a ball early in the game and he disappeared after that. [Rob] Gronkowski sure looked like himself. We are so much better with Rob Gronkowski in the game. The offense just looks different. And listen, what I want from O.J. Howard is what I see from Rob Gronkowski. I see from a guy like Rob Gronkowski a guy that is blocking and I see a guy catching a ball whether he is open or not. If that ball hits Rob Gronkowski’s hands, that’s a catch.”

* On the Bucs’ offensive gameplan:

“And it was so beautiful to see 10 different Buccaneers catch passes yesterday.”

Pete’s just happy about today & tomorrow’s football games and the 1pm Bucs vs Colts trench warfare, blood bath game b/c the Bears vs Lions game on Thursday had Pete running with scissors

  2. Hodad Says:

Bucs would be wise to draft the best Gronk clone they can find in the draft. I’m hoping Gronk has one more season in him probably his, and Tom’s last. If Brady is to stay around past that, we need a young Gronky.

  3. SB~LV Says:

The old game, not that long ago, was GREAT competition and high drama. I’ll take watching a great running back over a great WR … 5 out of 10 times 😊

  4. JimBuc2 Says:

    With apologies to Curly.
    (Smack!) Whatsa matter with you?
I’m tryin to worry, but nothins happening!

  5. Mikadeemas Says:

I think mommy gave Pete some Thanksgiving “tuddie”! GO BUCS!!

  6. Listnfrmafar Says:

Close all your eyes and think back to last seasons Vikings game. Can you say repeat? Hold your breath fans this could be a last possession game and Bucs haven’t fared well in that scenario this season.

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Flashback to week 1:

“The Cowboys have a strong running game and a great OL. Look for the Boys to pound the rock against the Buc’s vaunted DL.”

    How’d that turn out?

  8. dmatt Says:

Trey McBride of Colorada St is sort of a young Gronk if not a clone. Let’s move up to get him because this may be Gronk’s last year n we all no the history with OJ Howard “garbage in garbage out”. McBride has the total package. He’s big , he can block, has awesome hands, can run after the catch, can make difficult catches, not afraid of contact, can play wide out, n has a killer stiff arm. Let’s use a fork on Howard n be done with him.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

For all those saying that our defense can’t be run on … think again. Go back & look at what we did in the Bears game AND in the Saints game.

We whooped the Bears soundly (38-3) but in the process they racked up 143 yds rushing on 29 carries (4.9 YPC). Bears run-pass ratio was 45%, BUT they committed 5 turnovers AND couldn’t convert 3rd/4th downs (2-for-12). Bucs scored 17 pts off those turnovers, and the reason Bears couldn’t convert was because they were 3rd-and-long on most of those. Bucs also only had ONE penalty in that game. And oh ya, we also rushed for 182 yds in that game on 31 carries (5.9 YPC), with a run-pass ratio of 44%. IOW we controlled the game & didn’t beat ourselves.

The very next week we lost to the Saints 36-27 and did exactly the opposite: we let the Saints control the game & we turned the ball over 3 times (plus committed 11 penalties for 99 yds). Saints racked up 152 yds on us in 32 carries (4.8 YPC). Saints run-pass ratio was 44% & they committed no turnovers & only 2 penalties. Bucs did good running the ball (71 yds on 14 carries) but our run-pass ratio was right back down to only 25%. So Saints won the TOP battle, the Turnover Battle, did much better on penalties than we did (2-11); IOW we shot ourselves in the foot and beat ourselves.

Got a hunch that Indy will be looking at those 2 games real hard because they’re classic lessons on how to beat the Bucs and how to let the Bucs beat you. They don’t make the same mistakes the Bears made though.

  10. Beeej Says:

I think our defense was cheating toward the pass, for obvious reasons

  11. adam from ny Says:

when he is held under 100 yards, they lose every single time this season…

hold this fugger to 50-70 yards and we should win…

not an easy task, but possible…

this fugger has some big big games tho…like 150-200 yard type rushing performances…if he rocks out like that against us we’re in for a long day…

also after losing their first 3 games of the season, they are playing 6-2 football…some of the best ball in the league…

however half of these wins came against the jets, houston, jacksonville and miami…yet they have beaten some darn good football teams as well…

this team isn’t sure if they are average or great…in the end they are probably a good football team…yet we are supposed to be a great football team…sunday will let us know the deal…

    december football is basically here

  12. Idahobucfan4life Says:

Amen, dmatt! I thought the exact same thing when I read hodad’s comment above! Trey McBride is a monster! He plays the tight end position with all out passion. He has excellent hands, he blocks, he wins games for his team. The Bucs would be in a great position if they drafted him.

Hoping JTS’s hard work starts showing up on the stat sheets soon. He’s FAST! Did you see him catch Saquan Barkley from behind?? The D line was impenetrable early in the year. Has been much leakier since the Philadelphia game. Hopefully, Vea will be active and shore things up a little against J. Taylor. If anyone can gash them, it’s this guy!

I like how Mike Edwards plays. With SMB back, hopefully the secondary will tighten things down a little. I haven’t been super high on Dean, but at least he’s been there every week and has played through some of his own bruises. Any word on Davis? Where’s Sherman?? That deal seems like it was a lot of money for very little return. Maybe his veteran presence on the sideline has more value than I’m thinking though, who knows?

How long will Marpet be out? Solid O-line play is key to Brady’s (and ultimately, the team’s) success.

  13. Kentucky Buc Says:

Lol 😂. Yeah, good luck with that. How many drafts do we have to hear ‘Baby Gronk or next Gronk. Not happening. That’s why teams have 2 guys to do what Gronk does. Receiving tight end and blocking tight end. Even the few who do block don’t block the big boys like Gronk.

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

You want to take a Tight End in the 1st Round? A Tight End who has 1 TD this year, in 10 games?

  15. Idahobucfan4life Says:

Joe in Michigan, it’s true that he only has one TD this year, but how many college tight ends get over 1000 yards receiving in a year? Have you seen the way he plays??

And who said anything about the first round?

Trey McBride has a very bright NFL future in front of him. He plays angry like George Kittle, and he blocks very well and he makes very difficult catches in traffic. His QB trusts him.

  16. Listnfrmafar Says:

TE is the last thing Bucs will need if a number of these veterans leave.

  17. Joe in Michigan Says:

I have not seen McBride play, I don’t watch much college football, especially Colorado State. I wait until a lot closer to the draft before I start looking into it. One of the commenters said “trade up for him”, which lead me to believe that someone was thinking 1st Round. This kid does have a lot of catches and yards this year, but 1 TD in 10 games is less than ideal.

    ^^^^^^^
I was thinking the same thing, that’s why I asked the question above. A Tight End in the 3rd or 4th would be okay, depending how the draft goes.

  19. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Just say we did not retain Gronk, Brate, or Howard and we allocated that 20 million per year to signing Gesicki from Miami-that is money well spent.

  20. unbelievable Says:

Well they drafted Howard to be the next Gronk: tall, fast, huge nuts match, etc… unfortunately he’s almost never shown that killer instinct outside of a handful of plays. And his hands simply aren’t good enough.

Though to be fair, he’s never been super involved in the offense either, no matter who was the coach.

  21. unbelievable Says:

    * huge mismatch*

    Not nuts, lol.
