“We Are Not — I Will Repeat — We Are Not Going To Repeat A Super Bowl With Those Defensive Backs Playing The Way They Are Right Now”

Defense needs to get hungrier.

It doesn’t seem as though a former Bucs starting guard is ready to hit the panic button quite yet.

But Ian Beckles seems to believe the Bucs defense needs to turn things around fairly soon if the Bucs are going to make a run at another Super Bowl win.

Beckles, a current popular local sports radio personality, took to his podcast “In the Trenches” in the wake of the Bucs’ loss to the Rams and called out the defense.

“As far as defensive backs go, as a whole, we are not — I’ll repeat — we are not going to repeat a Super Bowl with those defensive backs playing the way they are right now,” Beckles said. “And I’ve said this millions and millions of times. Your defensive backs are only as good as your pass rush. Our pass rush ain’t worth a sh!t right now.”

Currently, it is as if through three games the Bucs have turned the clock back to the Mike Smith era of defense. Like then, it feels as if pass rushers just wave at opposing quarterbacks and defensive backs are getting sliced and diced to shreds.

The Bucs are one of the worst defenses in the league through three games in points allowed and pass completion percentage.

Beckles added he liked the way the Bucs fought but, “I think they ran into a better football team. … I thought they got out-coached and they got out-played as well.”

Beckles had other thoughts:

On Jamel Dean being hurt:

“That is not a good thing. It’s not like he’s such a great player, but he’s one of our DBs. You take him off the field and we are going to get worse, not better.”

On Mike Edwards and the DeSean Jackson touchdown:

“Mike Edwards, what are you biting on so darn hard?”

On the Bucs’ run game:

“Tom Brady was our leading rusher yesterday. Tom Brady was our leading rusher yesterday. I don’t like where we are heading.”

On Sunday night’s game at New England:

“I don’t think New England has a chance with Tom Brady coming off a loss, him rolling up in town. (Laughs). There’s too much for New England to deal with.”

Derrick Brooks & Ira Kaufman are all over the iconic Bucs-Patriots matchup on Sunday. Presented by Converged Technology Professionals. TAMPA TWO always delivers.

Jason Licht says: hold my beer….this is a special teams draft, we’re good at CB

  2. Anonymous Says:

7 players out, including Dean and Davis. I don’t see how we can win if the defensive front doesn’t get lots of sacks and pressures. Plus Brady sounds sick. May be another loss..

  3. Lamarcus Says:

That Derwin James pick looks really good right now lol

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    Good Lawd.

We are only 3 games in….

After they romp the Pats…………………….. 3-1.

    Calm down everyone..

    Lamarcus….Derwin James won’t help.

Very enlightening Ian, or Michael, no Ian !

  6. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

Ground breaking stuff as usual from Beckles.

  7. godlovesbucs Says:

Lamarcus- when vita came back and did what he did in the playoffs everyone was screaming that he was the reason we won the s.b.

Both vita and Darwin are phenomenal players at their position. Hard to knock one in favor of the other either way.

  8. Noles Says:

Both are right although I like Vea

Anyone want Dalvin Cook instead of OJ aka Jane Howard.

Should have taken DB instead of Trask…

  9. HC Grover Says:

It will be hard to win division or even get to playoffs now. Anything outside of FG range is 4 down territory. All punts are like handing points to our opponent. Look out for Carolina. If they win this week and we lose Big Trouble. Same with the Aint’s. D has to get some stops and force some FG’s instead of TD’s to keep it close. Sack the Mack.

  10. HC Grover Says:

Main problem is hurt JPP. Tron is not up to replace him. Sit Tron.

  11. mg Says:

The defense is out of shape, they are gasping for air by halftime. Get your schiff together or TB-12 will be throwing 60 times a game.

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Either play better or get better players. Simple as that.

  13. mg Says:

If I were Arians – I would demand all balls be checked for air. The Patriots let the air out of the balls so the running backs don’t fumble. Choke him with his hoody.

  14. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

We need an update, Ian. Is water still wet?

  15. Buxszntkt Says:

LOL Rob…waiting for an update Ian !

    He’s right, you know…

We are unable to play well it seems unless we are the underdog going in to a game. I don’t care who can or can’t suit up. Our team doesn’t seem to have what it takes to play as the favorite. Everyone was talking last week how we were going to go in to L.A. and beat their ass and take control of the NFC. Everyone is saying we are going in to Foxboro and beat New England. Everyone from news media, Sports media and of course all of the fans. The players watch these shows the players read these stories and blogs about all we have to do is show up and we win, the other team is just going to roll over for us. The coaches can’t seem to get these players to understand how to play as the favorite except Brady and our o-line and a couple of receivers it seems like the rest of them think that the other team is shaking in their boots. Well guess what they aren’t. New England has a very good defense and you know what they have been hearing all week? How we are going to roll up and down the field and put 50 on them. Our defense is a shambles right now. They aren’t going to be able to stop Mac Jones consistently today. We can win this game but it will be a dog fight. Everyone needs to quit kidding themselves. We had a great run last year, but that was last year. This is a different team.

  18. James Allen Lofton Says:

The good news is that we are early in the season and our injured secondary should be back in the next 2 to 4 weeks. It could have been a lot worse if this occurred in the second half of the season.

Our secondary is still young and learning which bodes well for the Bucs during the playoffs

The media likes to sturrup controversy. This is a good staff and very capable of correcting the defenses mistakes.

  19. Buczilla Says:

Either Shaq has been figured out and he needs to adjust accordingly, or he is mailing it in. Our pass rush is hot garbage without a healthy JPP. I saw Derwin mentioned even though I thought that was put to bed long ago. Dude is the NFL’s version of Humpty Dumpty.

  20. Bucamania Says:

Joe Tryon’s time to introduce himself to the world.

  21. D-Rome Says:

    He’s not wrong.
