Underrated Mike Evans

October 28th, 2021

Game-changer.

Joe got into a hassle with a guy on Instagram last week who was bent that Joe suggested Mike Evans will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday.

This guy thinks Evans is grotesquely overrated and probably isn’t a top-five receiver right now.

When Joe replied that when a guy breaks an NFL record formerly held by Randy Moss (one that already earned a Hall of Fame display) then that man is a stud and rightly deserves the proper recognition, this guy became unnerved.

This guy then claimed Evans is not “a game-changer” like Cheetah Hill or DeAndre Hopkins or Odell Beckham. Joe didn’t bother replying but when has Odell Beckham been a game-changer? Four, five years ago maybe?

To be fair, Beckham had three outstanding years to start his career and he’s been the poster child for overhyped since.

So anyway, CBS Sports put out some stats last night and showed no receiver since the start of the 2019 season has more touchdowns than Evans. Hill (27) and Davante Adams (26) are right behind him.

Maybe Joe is nuts but Joe seems to think a guy who can score touchdowns is a game-changer. Guess how many touchdowns Beckham has since 2017? Try 16, well short of what Evans has just in the past two seasons.

Beckham can’t hold a candle to Evans’ resume.

Now for hype? Yeah, Beckham has Evans over a barrel when it comes to hype. Last Joe checked, hype doesn’t score touchdowns or win games, forget about a Super Bowl.

Mike is the Man! 1st ballot HOF’er

  2. Joe in Michigan Says:

Mike Evans is a great player, teammate, and guy. Some of the comments by Bucs “fans” the past few days, the “Mike Evans isn’t —- enough” crowd, was painful to see. Be happy for WHO HE IS, a Hall of Fame caliber football player.

  3. westernbuc Says:

Chris Simms says Baker Mayfield is just not looking at OBJ the same way that Jameis didn’t look to DJax. Must be some smoke

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

You got it Joe! Hype over substance. Mike isn’t the “sexy” WR. He has “quietly” done what no other WR in history has ever done and continues to play at a HOF level.
    Joe in Michigan- Nailed it!

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

    Did I mention he’s a Buc?!

  6. Bird Says:

    Joes

Was that guy medicated pete ? 😂
Is evans top 5 this year …no
Has he been in the past…yup
Is mike evans the best offensive weapon (not named brady) in bucs history…yup

I read an article on 1st ballot hall of fame receivers and there are not many…moss and megatron and a few others.

Mike may not be 1st ballot but he should get in when career done
And things can change if he puts up double digit tds for a few more years
Also, if he gets another ring

I mean the dude as 7 tuddies in 7 games this year. Lets hope he breaks his own record this year.

  7. Man Child Says:

What kind of simple minded heathen would assume Mike isn’t getting into the hall of fame. Time for a cancel free public shaming

  8. Teflon Don Says:

Buc fans take this man for granted. Definitely one of the greatest to ever put on a Buc uniform

  9. Youngbucs Says:

Wonder which QB Mike had the most tds in a season with?🐐

  10. #1bucsfan Says:

ME13 is a stud. He’s going to the hall of fame and if anyone thinks other wise they either are a hater or they have no clue about football. Keep up the good work mike.

  11. Kevin J. Strickroth Says:

Mike has as many 1000 yard seasons as Antonio Brown….7! Oh, and there all in a row to start his career

  12. Listnfrmafar Says:

One might asked why does he get doubled teamed? His value has slipped since AB started playing like AB but that’s because TB12 has so many options and spreads the ball around. The proof will be in the pudding Sunday how much of a gamer he is. I saw this morning on GMFB the start em & sit em. They say start Jamais & NO def. Nothing for Bucs.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mike Evans ranks high on the greatest Buc offensive player list…..with Warwick Dunn Mike Alstott, Jimmy Giles and America’s Quarterback.

  14. Steven007 Says:

Where is Robert and Peter who’s on medication to chime in here? They’re among the biggest Evans haters on this blog. Interested to see how they will try to denigrate these facts. Okay interested is a stretch…

  15. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I love Evans but Brady is such an excellent passer it takes what Evans is special at away from his game. With Glennon and Winston, Evans grabbed 90% of the jump balls. I think now that he doesn’t do that people don’t see him as hall of fame.

  16. JimBuc2 Says:

Med Pete’s ME13 diatribe is solid evidence that Pete violates the number one rule in self-medication: Don’t get high on your own supply. Loser.

    LFG Bucs
    Let’s Go Brandon!

  17. Joe Says:

Chris Simms says Baker Mayfield is just not looking at OBJ the same way that Jameis didn’t look to DJax. Must be some smoke

Trust is a huge thing for a QB. And the sh!t DJax pulled Joe wouldn’t have thrown to him either.

Michael Lombardi’s convinced OBJ is shot. Says his legs are gone.

  18. Medicated Pete Says:

#13 is a good WR w/ size & the longest arms in the universe being his #1 attribute. He lacks in intelligence & skill. Needs 5,000 more yards to be in H.O.F. but i think he retires well before that.

  19. Robert Says:

    @steven

I’m not an ME hater. He has value as a jump ball guy. He just can’t be counted on for routes or lacing shoes.

His stats could be equated to garbage time for another team who is losing badly, as his stats are padded with playing from behind with JW only seeing him on the field. Give him a route and say it will be there and he’ll trip or not be in the right spot.

  20. TOM Says:

Speaking of underrated I think Tyler Johnson is very underrated.

  21. Charles Holder Says:

We are talking about a guy that as a rookie had a thousand receiving yards with another wideout who had a thousand and was catching balls from two crap QB’s Mike is a damn talented WR, like Fitz with the Cardinals, he is consistent and always ready.

  22. D-Rome Says:

Anyone that doesn’t think Mike Evans is a future Hall of Famer does not watch the Bucs with any consistency. Evans’ consistency is what will get him in the Hall of Fame. While everyone seemingly ooh’s and ahh’s over large one handed catches, Mike Evans has dominated with consistency.

  23. Steven007 Says:

Robert, I know I mentioned you by name but you could have just as well done an @Joe with your reply since you’re also in complete disagreement with him clearly. Bottom line is the argument is irrelevant as of today. And the facts reveal that Evans has done a few things that no other WRs have done including Hall of famers. That means something. And while he is obviously great at jump balls, the majority of his receptions have not been those type. That said I think AB is the most complete receiver on the team at the moment. But I’d never complain having Evans on my side as well.

  24. Joe Says:

I’m not an ME hater. He has value as a jump ball guy. He just can’t be counted on for routes or lacing shoes.

LOL “can’t be counted on” yet no one in 100+ years has had seven seasons of 1,000 yards each. Reread what you typed. 🙂

If Evans “can’t be counted on,” then every NFL receiver who ever took the field was equally or even less reliable.

  25. zzbuc Says:

The ones who questions ME13, just check stats…..He is probably one of the best Bucs ever……Just can´t get it!!!

  26. Robert Says:

    @joe…..

this is the equivalent of JW- check yo sheets/stats….whatever that was. How many times has Brady rolled his eyes after dropping a dime and ME tripped or missed the route etc? A couple/few times a game is what I see.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

And Hill and Adams are the only all star WR on those teams so I’m assuming they get much more targets than Evans with the Krew.

  28. Jerry Strickland Says:

We are so blessed to have Mike Evans as a Buccaneer. Yes he is a Hall Of Fame player. How can a Buccaneer fan not give Mike the recognition that he so rightly deserves.

  29. zzbuc Says:

@Jerry Strickland…. You said it Sir, right in the spot!!!!

  30. Coburn Says:

Just look at what he’s done when there weren’t as many other options. I still think Koetter offense suited his skills and big body a little better, but I could be wrong.

  31. Eric Says:

Never argue with an idiot it makes the both of you look foolish!

  32. Steven007 Says:

Robert, ouch! You got helicoptered by Joe.

  33. Kalind Says:

If Evans played in NY he’s be the greatest football player to have every graced the gridiron. This is why OBJ is a hype thing. He made one great catch playing for a NY team. That. Is. It.

Evans is farrrrrrr superior to him, (and to Hill).

  34. Steven007 Says:

… which is why he keeps going back to him right Robert? To the tune of three touchdowns last game. Maybe you watched?

  35. Joe Says:

How many times has Brady rolled his eyes after dropping a dime and ME tripped or missed the route etc?

And how many touchdowns does Evans have since Brady showed up? Check yo sheet because it doesn’t lie. (And yes, Jameis was right, too. See if you can name 10 other QBs who threw for over 5,000 yards. Hint: You can’t. And Joe puts much more stock into production than mishaps. Always have. Always will.)

You are aware that a big reason Brady came here was because of Evans, right? But yeah, Brady rolls his eyes at Evans — and throws him another touchdown pass.

    Child, please.

  36. SB Says:

Nobody in the NFL had more TDs last yr than Mike
Mike has more than DOUBLED the amount of TDs by ANY Bucs WRs Ever!
One on one NOBODY catches contested balls better than Mike!
Some of you guys are trippin’

  37. David Says:

People just see someone like Hill, OBJ or Hopkins and see the flash because they are very dynamic. And they are great receivers.

Evans is a big tall possession receiver with not a lot of flash but he can go deep and he can make great catches. He’s consistent.
A receiver who is on pace to average 1150+ yards per year with 9-10 TDs per year,
every single season for 8 years and beyond… That is invaluable.
That is incredible. That is a Hall of Famer.

  38. Listnfrmafar Says:

There is no doubt Evan’s is used to a different type of QB than Brady, they are frequently not on the same page but that will change over time. Brady requires his WR to see what he does at the line of scrimmage. Unlike Godwin, Evan’s has years of experience doing it his way that is the only reason for the few connections that are missed. Old dig new tricks. There are guys that see the field better, AB, Moss, Hopkins, Fitzgerald etc. It will come soon for Evan’s that’s what Brady’s Friday meetings are for. Evan’s will be in the Hof but not first ballet. Oh, he shouldn’t be compared to Fitzgerald he ain’t even close yet.

  39. Duane Says:

Evans puts all those numbers up with double teams, a long list of undesireable quarterbacks, and for many years a historically bad defense, and not once has he griped about his money, his touches, or his situation. He is a game changer the second the opposing defense decides to single cover him with someone not named Lattimore or Ramsay. He isnt slowing down, and his production is solid, eventually his resume will speak for itself. I think he is dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on an elite NFL career.

  40. rrsrq Says:

The real issue is ME hasn’t made those spectacular plays when the camera has been on, think of the playoffs last year, Mike was solid but not spectacular. Some of his best games, when jameis was throwing the ball was never seen outside of Bucs fans and whoever they played that week. National pundits know who he is based on the consistent play of Evans. I doubt he will be a first ballot HOF’er, you had guys like TO waiting (rather it was attitude or performance is the question). He needs to have a special playoff run along with keeping that 1000 yard streak alive, because the hype train is focusing on the Jamar Chases and DK Metcalfs coming out

  41. Posey99 Says:

ME also gets a lot of PI calls on him. He doesn’t get credit for those yards on the stat sheet. Just FYI for any of you stat trackers.

  42. David Says:

Not worth my breath to argue with a couple of these people ,
    like Robert.
    That’s just pure ignorance.
They see someone like Tyreek and think that’s what you need- dynamic quick cutting receiver.
There are many types of receivers.
ME 13 is on pace to be a Hall of Famer – 1150 yards & 9/10 TDs every single year will do that.

He’s not Dynamic but he’s a big target, uses body well, can go deep at times, does not have many drops, and is extremely consistent. That consistency happens to be pro bowl caliber

  43. Robert Says:

I guess I am at a disadvantage as I rarely watched games after they put JW as the face of the franchise. So, there are a lot of JW and ME homers on here. I was the one who said from the get go JW was useless upstairs. I also said TB would turn the team around and make the O line look like superstars. Oh, and I also called the AB thing….I could go on, but too many ME homers on here. He’s extremely good, not great.

  44. Buxfanintx Says:

Whose been throwing to Mike? mcown, Jameis, Fitz, Glennon.. come in man

  45. David Says:

    Robert

😂 LoL. Robert is patting himself on the back because he said Tom Brady will turn things around and make the O line look better… Wow. Put yourself on a limb there LoL.
Anyone and everyone who knows anything about football pretty much said that.

But none of that has anything to do with you being completely wrong about Mike Evans.

  46. Dyno-White ! # 45 Says:

NFL record for consistency ( 1st WR start w 1k yards, leads league in drawing DPI, gets double covered, is THE 3rd down option (before Gronk) , made Jamie’s look decent, unselfish, was TB 12 eye candy to come here, leads bigger names in TDs, plays hurt. I’m sorry: who is the best receiver in the last 7 years?

  47. SlyPirate Says:

It’s how you interpret: “Game Changer”

An example is Randy Moss vs Chris Carter. Both HOF. Carter was a reliable premier WR. That’s M1k3. Moss was a homerun threat on every play. That’s AB. That’s a Game Changer.

  48. Bob in valrico Says:

Mike has spent the majority of his his career since college catching passes from
the likes of Manziel and Jameis. IMO both QB’s relied on getting the pass in same area as Mike a bit too much, concise routes be damned. One memory I have is of
Mike running a go route at full speed with his head bent backwards searching the sky for an misplaced Jameis pass. Can he improve route running sure, but he proved he could be where he was supposed to be when Fitz was throwing the
ball in stride in that memorable shootout in New Orleans.

  49. Sparky Says:

Mike Evans this season is tied for 2nd in TDs, 19th in yards, and 27 of his 37 catches have been for first downs. Considering he’s on a team with 3 #1 WRs and a Hall of Fame TE, what else do you want from the guy?

Anyone who downplays Mike Evans’s ability, desire, or “craft” is a straight up moron.

  50. Buczilla Says:

Pure silliness for anyone to think that Mike is not on a direct path to the hall if fame. Is he as good now as Brown and Moss we’re in their prime? Nope, but he’s the best thing since and his numbers and doing something that has never been done in the one hundred year history of the NFL is legendary stuff man.

Look, even one of my favorite journalists ever (waves at Ira) grossly underrates Mike every single year and places lesser players like “where’s the gd touchdowns?” Julio Jones over him. Chris Simms is an obvious Buc homer, but he does the same thing every year. It’s kinda bizarre really, but even some of the best in the business can be wrong. The film, numbers, and one upping hall of fame dudes will get Mike into the hall as long as he continues his great play.

  51. Buc king Says:

Just bought my limited edition Mikey jersey greatest receiver of all time he will be in canton and he will wear the ugly jacket and he will prove all his haters wrong. His drops don’t define his production. I hope he develops into a 3rd down guy for the rest of his career.
I expected him to have his best year ever..will see…I do hate that the Saints have his number and how in some games he disappear or how he acts injured after every play… he needs to get on that t.o work out so he can be a buc 6 to 8 more years

  52. geno711 Says:

Robert, Brady has something to do with the offensive line looking better.
    I agree.

However, Arians and his OL coaches came in 2019 and that offensive line started actually playing better in the 2nd half of 2019. It was obvious.

That coaching staff/team GM also gets credit for so quickly making Wirfs a stud, and developing Cappa.

  53. geno711 Says:

Not mentioned in this article or comments is that Evans not only has the most receiving TDs in the NFL since 2019, he also has the most receiving TD’s in the league since he started in 2014 with 68.

    Active leaders of receiving TD’s of all currently active players in the NFL are ;
    1. Gronk
    2. AB
    3. Jimmy Graham (still on bears roster)
    4. Mike Evans

Last I looked scoring TD’s is a pretty important stat when evaluating guys and their careers. A lot more than someone’s interpretation of when a quarterback might roll his eyes.

  54. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

The fake Bucs fans are out today. That means anyone who hates on Mike Evans or omits James Wilder in a list of greatest offensive Bucs.

  55. unbelievable Says:

    Pete & Robert… 2 dumbs in a dumpster
