Screen Test

October 14th, 2021

Devin White

Without Lavonte David prowling from sideline to sideline and using his on-field savvy, Joe has no doubt what’s coming from the Eagles tonight.

As you’ll see in the Tweet from iconic Eagles beat writer Paul Domowitch below, Philadelphia loves to “run” via short passes. They’ll fire off quick screens and more traditional ones, and be darn happy with four- and five-yard gains.

Bucco Bruce Arians considers those “run plays” for the Bucs offense, and it’s similar in Philadelphia, though they do it more often.

Yes, the Bucs have mauler-speedster Devin White, the savior linebacker, but without David and — and with their shaky-tackling cornerbacks — Joe expects Philly to keep up that short game tonight.

And heck, nearly every other Bucs opponent has pounded Tampa Bay with short passes. Just look at Miami’s successful opening drive on Sunday.

With David out, this is a big opportunity for White to show his value and hopefully record his first big-impact play of the season.

Play defense like it’s the 4th quarter of the Saints playoff game. Keep a safety deep just in case.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

I say cover 0 and all out blitz on nearly every play. Yes, they’ll get some scores out of that, but you’ll also get sacks and some turnovers, maybe a defensive TD or two out of it.

The worst thing in the world is to watch an impotent defense that can’t get off the field, giving up 4 yards on every play as the other team does long drives that end in TDs.

That is what I’d fear in this game, that we can’t get the defense off the field and the offense gets only a limited number of drives. If other teams want to beat us, that is how you would do it.

  3. Duane Says:

Im expecting 45 to show up tonight. This kinda game has his name written all over it, and the bright lights are on. Perfect time for a 2021 coming out party.

  4. firethecannons Says:

I know he can do it and will do it!

  5. Casual Observer Says:

I think Tryon and Shaq will have big games tonight. Both are fast enough to chase down any QB.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m a bit nervous about this one….but then, I’m nervous about all of them

  7. Destinjohnny Says:

If you can’t just down Jalen Hurts then u are a college defense

  8. MadMax Says:

White, tryon, shaq, jpp….no worries, just put 250 on it for 208, just have to win by 8….thats a crazy gimme!

  9. SteveK Says:

Can’t wait for big sexy aka Vita Vea to introduce himself to Mr. Hurts.

  10. Ash Says:

Hope they even out the snaps between jpp and Joe tryon and not like lopsided dolphins game

  11. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

I would love to see some Solid tackling! Perhaps a pick 6 on one of these screens

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

    Meant to say
If you cant shut down Hurts, then you are a college defense

  13. Craig Says:

DBs need to keep the ball in front of them, the outside backers need to stay home and watch for the QB to run.

The D-line needs to push hard and leave room for 45 to slip in to the QB.

Rushing that lateral game can mean a pick-6 or three.

  14. alton d green Says:

Hey Todd. The corners should be able to smell the receivers breath. gotta stop giving them 7-10 yds all the way to the endzone

  15. alton d green Says:

Hey fellow Bucs fans, has it sunk in that we need to score on every play????

  16. Natron Says:

We need Lavonte around as much as possible, because he remembers the bad old times

  17. Lets Roll Says:

Thought this was another COVID article detailing how the CDC is changing SWAB Test to SCREEN Test after the new year because of how inaccurate the current test standards are and have been.

Once the switch the test we will officially be out of the SWAB Test Pandemic.

  18. PassingThru Says:

Cover 0 would be absolute suicide. All it would take is a CB blowing his assignment and Phili would be off to the races for 6 points.

  19. The Beer Whisperer Says:

As an arm-chair DC, I’m glad Todd Bowles is in charge of the Defense.
And no one in the “peanut gallery”

  20. The Beer Whisperer Says:

My Defensive Plan : “tackle the man with the football”

  21. Anonymous Says:

Bucs need to NOT play to the level of their competition, as they showed last week, beating a sub par Dolphins team. Need that same performance tonight.

  22. 163doubleplay Says:

Eagles will have an easy time throwing to the secondary. If they try to blitz Hurts, he’ll use his legs to run and open up his receivers for an easy catch. If they dont blitz, same thing he’ll spot his receivers or use his legs to extend the play. Eagles 27 bucs 24

  23. Lance Says:

Been following Brady in NE since I was teenager in 2001, and left the NFL and team when Gronk retired. Came back to the NFL when Tom and Gronk joined Tampa last year. Seen nearly every Brady game in the past 20y in person or on TV. The greatest patriot of all time is not even Tom it’s Gronk.
Tom’s record with Gronk when he can finish a game without a serious injury, is like 140 in 145 completed games Gronk is healthy. Gronk is basically guaranteed 7pts a game and his blocking is some of the best ever for a TE. Gronks not playing it’s a short week and on the road this is a trap game Tom will have an issue with Philly corners, unless we run very well this looks like a surprise loss or low scoring sneak win.

  24. SteveK Says:

Hurts is going to get hit and the Bucs will shut down the run. Make him pass and get pressure.

    Bucs Win

    34-20

  25. SlyPirate Says:

    Rojo …

I know we’re talking defense but I could see this being a good game for Rojo.

Philly has terrible run D. Rojo could break off a big one.

  26. Indefel Says:

Hey! I finally ended up in moderation. Only post twice a year. Kewl…

  27. Former NE fan Says:

Been following Brady in NE since I was teenager in 2001, and left the NFL and the team when Gronk retired 2019. Came back to the NFL when Tom and Gronk joined Tampa last year. Seen nearly every Brady game in the past 20y in person or on TV. The greatest patriot of all time is not even Tom it’s actually Gronk.
Tom’s record with Gronk in the game when Gronk isn’t seriously injured is nearly 95% sitting at 139 in 145 games finished when healthy. Gronk is missing tonight, philly isn’t trash, short week, away game on prime time means a bad refs, and flat game for Tom unless the bucs force TOs as they been bad on defence since Tom joined the team. Considering the massive advantage of having Tom, Gronk, Evans, AB and the Oline and what that brings to the team
the defence should be way better by now.

  28. Medicated Pete Says:

Antonio Wingfield Jr cost SMB the season & hurt himself for at least 3 games. It’s his fault if we don’t win the Superbowl

  29. orlbucfan Says:

LVD has been mentoring White since White was drafted. It’s about time White shows he’s learned a few tricks from the quiet master. I will be paying attention to the VV-JTS connection, too. This game could go either way. Hope Bucs prevail.

  30. Ash Says:

Hope to see more balance between jpp and jts snap counts would like to see more Joe tryon on the field

  31. JimmyJack Says:

Devin White should be under to microscope. 5 games in and hes had no impact. We were comparing this guy to Ray Lewis after last year………he is nowwhere near expectation.

  32. JimmyJack Says:

The good news about this defense is the passrush has started heating up the last few weeks…….If they continue that tonight I expect a few turnover from an inexperienced QB and another good night on the scoreboard(17 points allowed last 2 weeks)

  33. DaBux Says:

    JTS spy Hurts.

Devin White murderize anyone who touches the ball.

    End of discussion.

  34. Winny Testaverde Says:

Time to put the dagger in them, Dee. ( We’ll watch )…

  35. Medicated Pete Says:

Bucs win 28-27. Stone cold lead pipe lock

  36. Stanglassman Says:

Both teams call their defense “the grave diggers.” Wouldn’t the winner get the name?

  37. Defense Rules Says:

Rod … I agree with PassingThru; ‘Cover 0 would be absolute suicide’. I’ll be surprised if Bowles has us blitz a total of 30 times tonight. I do expect a lot of screens out of Philly, and we’d do better handling those if we keep our LBs home instead of ‘hair on fire up the middle’. Also expect Hurts to do a lot of running himself tonight, so wouldn’t be surprised to see White used as a ‘spy’ similar to how Monte used Brooks against QBs like Michael Vick.

  38. DoooshLaRue Says:

God this pregame garbage is ridiculous.
All this diversity only seems to come in one color.

  39. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

    3 things I’ve learned this week…
    1. Never bet Bucs + more than 5
    2. Always vote conservative if ya want to live FREE
    3. DELETE ALL EMAILS AND TEXTS😳

  40. E.V. Says:

We would of beat Philly 50+ if it wasn’t for the 2 pass interference calls also we have a 3rd or 4th and one and we have the ultimate bull dozing back Mr. Lenny and we pass…… Get the first down with Lenny than pass deep to the other receivers on first down. Does this make sense?????? And they talking about leftwitch being a coach that would be a total failure. When we were up 21-7 it seemed we went conservative. You can not do that in this pass happy league.. I can understand if it was 35-7 than you just take it a little easy but keep hammering!!! No lead is safe unless your in 4th quarter winning by 35 plus. It happened to us with Manning when he was with Colt’s we were winning by I think 28 with less than 7 minutes I think and we LOST!?? POUND THEM DONT FEEL SORRY FOR THEM…
