Michael Irvin: Attack Richard Sherman

October 3rd, 2021

Bold talk.

So, the Bucs are starting newly acquired, 33-year old Richard Sherman. That has a pair of former NFLers worked up.

This morning Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the Bucs, decimated at corner with injuries, will start Sherman despite the veteran corner having logged but three practices.

On Wednesday when he first spoke to the Tampa Bay pen and mic club, Sherman confessed it would be “foolish” to expect him to play much less start because he wasn’t in game shape.

That’s how bad the Bucs have been bitten by the injury bug.

So on NFL Network, both “The Playmaker,” Michael Irvin, and DeAngelo Hall said they would absolutely go after Sherman, types the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio.

“We are not expressing how difficult and how crazy it is to say, ‘Oh yeah, we just signed Richard Sherman off the street. Oh yeah, he’s starting,’” Irvin said. “We’re letting it slide. If I’m playing Richard Sherman, I’ll be like, ‘Let’s go right at this dude.’”

Joe thought Hall was harsher, saying Sherman was toast in his last few games with the 49ers and he absolutely would target Sherman.

You can see Hall’s full take in the NFL Network video below.

    Damn…
    Go Bucs

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

Playing already has injury written all over it. Smh

  3. PassingThru Says:

Just what I posted a few minutes ago in the Good/Bad Buc’s Pass Defense topic. You know McDaniels and Belichick are licking their chops at the chance to test Richard Sherman. Sherman hasn’t played football in 10 months and has only 3 practices as a Buc. New England will without a doubt instruct Mac Jones to go after Sherman early and often.

Sherman is going to be baptized by fire. The team doesn’t have the talent to really do much else than to see if Sherman can hold down the fort.

  4. webster Says:

I heard zero wrong with what they stated. You would be a fool as an OC not to go after him early and often. If he plays well, then you tip your cap to him. If he sucks, then that was to be expected because he is 33 and has not had on pads in a year. He is not ready to tackle etc. The bucs are looking desperate by doing this which is really unfair to sherman who is in no way in football shape. And this is why the trask pick was not a good idea if you are going for two as you say. We have a 2nd round pick who is not even dressing on sundays.

  5. Tackleblockwin Says:

I’m not judging Sherman too hard tonight on his play. Give him some safety cover over the top and hope for the best.

  6. Stanglassman Says:

“I think it would be foolish to expect me to come out this week and play at a super-high level,” Sherman said Wednesday. “If I did it, it would be another thing to chalk up as a cool thing I did. But I think the expectation is for me to train and be in shape and give me an opportunity for the following game.”

  7. Mort Says:

He’s not the fifth best. That’s the thing. Let’s count it:

    1: Davis
    2: Sherman
    3: cockrell
    4: Dessir
    5: Delaney

SMB and Dean are both out, and Davis is questionable. Our secondary is absolutely in shambles right now if the goal is super bowl level play. And make no mistake, that is the goal and expectation.

So yeah, I don’t know a world in which Sherman is the fifth best corner on this game day roster.

Also FWIW, he was dealing with a calf injury and excess weight in SF, and you have to hope that he has gotten past those things and still has some gas left in the proverbial tank. But it’s a rough situation and we gotta roll with it.

  8. Alanbucsfan Says:

Pats will go after Sherman and Bucs will go after Mac Jones. We’ll see which strategy wins…

  9. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Making worried Marge Simpson sounds.

  10. Bucfan81 Says:

This team is not that stupid. He may start and play a few downs here and there but I bet he gets maybe 20 percent of the snaps if even that. It will be mostly Davis, Cockrell and Delaney is my guess. Either way with the back end so beat up the front seven better be showing up this game pulling most of the weight.

  11. JA Says:

This is more about injuries than the talent or “game ready” shape of Richard Sherman. Summing up our first three games, one might think our DB’s have been comprised of nothing but a bunch of cloned Medicated Pete’s.
Simply put, the Bucs have no DB’s better than an out of shape 33 year old who was famous once.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

    We’ll see.

    Go Bucs!!!!!

  13. firethecannons Says:

I’m good with playing Sherman and I suspect he will hold his own! He looked the part in practice. It starts up front. We need to control the clock way better

  14. DaBux Says:

Sherman gets a pick 6 tonight. Book it.

  15. Leighroy Says:

Mort read my mind before I scrolled to his post. I mean what alternative is there right now? Far from ideal, but thankfully we’re playing a rookie statue at qb.

Pass rush will determine the outcome on defense. If they can get home, then the burden on the secondary is drastically reduced. Wake up Shaq!!

  16. HC Grover Says:

Change the D. Sit Tron and play Sherman as Monster Man. Mainly bench Plan 9 From Outer Space. Put in the Big Guys up front.

What Have We Got to Lose?

  17. NPRSageBoy Says:

5 time Pro Bowler or not, playing a guy you virtually signed off the street has more than a whiff of desperation to it

Times must be tough at One Bucco Palace. If this goes South quickly look for TB12 at corner in the base D.

    Peace, out….

  18. Buxszntkt Says:

Sherman will get a pick off Mac Jones throwing a short pass to the left sideline.

On to more important things, Joe, the stunningly hot Charissa Thomoson is back this week and noted she was in the hospital last week. With loving concern for Charissa do some investigative reporting and let us know what’s up with Charissa.

  19. Bucs Win Says:

Sherman will get 2 int’s today.

  20. Duane Says:

I take Brady and the Offense over Mac Jones attacking Ole Sherm all day long. Gonna have to win shootouts until the defense gets right. The Defense need to WAKE UP. 45 and 58 told us all offseason that they were going to be the DPOY. They are not even cancelling each other out. Our linebackers for sure have underperformed so far, and we havent had a noticeable game from any of those four guys.

  21. HC Grover Says:

Send in Donder and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen…and above all Blitzen. Our D has been the gift that keeps on giving. Bring out The Grinch!

  22. Joe Says:

With loving concern for Charissa do some investigative reporting and let us know what’s up with Charissa.

Gotta be honest with you. Joe gave up NFL pregame shows long ago. Outside of Rapoport/La Canfora/Jay Glazer/Adam Schefter with breaking news, those things are a tedious bore. Hours of fluff.

Adam Schein’s show on CBS Sports Network isn’t bad though.

  23. Buc-em-up84 Says:

What receivers do the Patriots have that Sherman can’t cover. With RS starting that just means there will be a lot o zone coverages and zone blitzing. Either way Mac n Cheese will be under duress

  24. Buxszntkt Says:

Maybe , but watching Charissa is well worth the hour.

Better still, the frat boy banter between Bradshaw, Strahan , and sidekicks Johnson and Long is not to be missed. Funniest hour of the week as they pick on each other !!!

  25. #1bucsfan Says:

Not something the Bucs should be bragging about starting Sherman after missing football last year do to injury, he’s not in football shape and he’s had 3 practices 3 THREE!! What could possible go wrong but the crazy thing is he’s better than the other cbs good luck to our defense if we can’t get a pass rush. Let’s go bucs

  26. HC Grover Says:

Have we put together The Santa Clause Defense? Ho Ho Ho instead of Yo Ho Ho…stay tuned for the answer tonight.

  27. Kentucky Buc Says:

They can say what they want. Rookie QB against Sherm . He’s a crafty SOB.

  28. HC Grover Says:

Oh No Gronk has a punctured lung. Get well Gronk!

  29. webster Says:

Joe totally agree. The last time i watched a pre game show was before the super bowl in 2003 with the bucs.

  30. Cainishere Says:

    54-0Bucs

  31. Sandman Says:

Our passing defense wasn’t good last year, and then they double down and bet in a roster that is one year older. They paid 10M to Suh, and allowed him to play just half the snaps. If they wanted to repeat, they should find ways to pump fresh blood on the defense (or the offensive line and RB as well). There was ton of options in draft to help the defense. Even more in the free agency market. There was a very good guard in the 6th round that we couldn’t draft because they trade up to get Darden, that even isn’t really a true returner.
But Licht doesn’t make any bold move, throwing away 2nd, 3rd and 4th round pick with people that couldn’t really help the team and spending the rest of the money signing the old guys instead of trying to improve the team.
Now they are praying for a miracle.

  32. Buc4evr Says:

Yeah go after Sherman, he’s the least of my worries in the secondary. The d-line better be on fire today!, shut down the run and Devin and white better get it done in the backfield- like 6 sacks.

  33. Colonel Angus Says:

Sherman has probably been studying the playbook for weeks. This didn’t happen over night.

  34. Joe Says:

Charissa is well worth the hour

She is top shelf but Instagram delivers more and Joe doesn’t have to deal with the nonsense of her show. Besides, Joe has as much chance of picking up the Instagram chicks as he does Thompson and Joe’s been in the same room with her a half-dozen times or so. 🙂

  35. Buczilla Says:

Wow, this is kinda sad and pitiful. I’ve been singing Licht’s praises for a while, but this f up is all on him. Outside of Carlton Davis, there wasn’t another consistently good corner on our roster “before” all of the injuries. If my dumba$$ knew this, surely he did too? Maybe we could have drafted a corner or two before round 7? Money was tight, so I get not going after an established corner in free agency, but Licht betting against the injury bug has come back to bite him and us in the butt. I’m hoping for quick recoveries!

  36. Buczilla Says:

Besides, Joe has as much chance of picking up the Instagram chicks as he does Thompson and Joe’s been in the same room with her a half-dozen times or so. 🙂

    ROFL

  37. Srbija Says:

Good luck with that strateg if you play with a fore you got burned i remember when guys try to throw Ball in sherman direction thay got intercepted, I predict guy Will have a 1 INT inthis game

  38. Hodad Says:

Right now Sherman is our best, and healthiest corner. Not playing him would be foolish. There’s no more hitting in practice this time of year, it’s glorified walk throughs so more practice time isn’t going to get him in football shape, only playing will. Let’s also remember his contract is incentive laden, so for Sherman the sooner he hits the field the better chance he has to make himself some money.

  39. Kellen yeoman Says:

They should have addressed this crap In the off-season should’ve let Shaq walk and used that money to fix the whole defense

  40. Tim R. Says:

Playing Sherman is taking a chance. There is no doubt that Jones will go after him.. Knowing this puts more on the defence to putting pressure on Jones. If the linebackers are not blitzing Jones then they must pass cover the short passes. The front four must get more pressure which then sets up the blitz package to get to Jones. There is no doubt that Jones will throw for a decent amount of yards. However when they get in the red zone get ready Jones the bucks are coming after you. If Brady and company can get 30 points the Bucs will be victorious.

  41. You gotta be crazy Says:

    Lol… Not sure I’d target him…. He’s still good

  42. Mike Says:

They will need to let him play close to the line in bump and run but be able to pass off receivers cutting across the field or going deep. He’s not going to be able to run with WR’s in this league.

  43. Cobraboy Says:

I am less concerned about the coverage skills of Sherman vs a rookie QB.

If I were Belichick, I’d run non-stop sweeps, screens and counters right at Sherman and force him to be physical in wide support.

THAT is where he is badly out of practice.

  44. View from 132 Says:

What does “start” mean anymore? Every team has 50 substitution packages. If we “start” with 5 or 6 DBs, did he really start at corner? This is mid-week fodder.

  45. Listnfrmafar Says:

Haha, picked up the Defense quicker than expected? My daughters flag football team could learn Bowles D.

  46. Bucsfanman Says:

    Knock-knock!
    Who’s there?
If the Answer is “pass rush”,
    Problem solved!

  47. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Talk is cheap. We’ll find out more, in a couple hours.

  48. alton d green Says:

well bucsfanman, you nailed it! All you guys are saying BA and Todd don’t know what the hell the’re doing. PASS RUSH!! also double help him occasionally. The owners gave over $2 million for the probowler. COME ON MAN. give him a chance. Hell, it couldn’t be much worse LOL

  49. Beeej Says:

Hmm. KC has 192 yards rushing against the Rams. We had like 23

  50. BigMacAttack Says:

Sherman will get a pick 6 tonight on the rookie. Buc’s d line comes alive tonight too. TB12 6 TDs

  51. Paul Says:

Well it’s 9:25pm and Michael Irvin is spot on. The Pats just scored and Sherman’s defense is the main reason. He’s not in shape and he’s being exposed. He should sit in the second half and get someone else in there until he learns the playbook and gets his sealegs back.
