“I Ain’t Trying To Take No Food Off Of Your Table. I’m Trying To Put Food On Your Table”

Details goal with Bucs.

Really, really interesting conversation between Bucs corner Richard Sherman and Eagles corner Darius “Big Play” Slay on Sherman’s latest podcast that popped last night.

There was very little Bucs chatter but the discussed their careers and how they got to where they are, focused mostly on Slay (the veteran Eagles corner wanted to play college ball at Georgia but what stopped him was the Bulldogs wanted him to be a running back. Slay said he “knew my worth” and wanted no part of seeing his NFL earnings potential pounded out of him as a back in the SEC).

Part of the conversation turned to learning the ins and outs of the NFL and Slay said part of that was when, as a member of the Lions, Detroit signed Rashean Mathis.

Slay’s eyebrows raised. He thought he was the ruler in the Lions’ cornerback room and wondered how he and Mathis would fit.

Mathis told the cornerback room was still Slay’s and he was still the big dog in the Motor City, and Mathis said he was just there to help show young corners the way and maybe get some wins. Slay said he learned from that conversation how to be a pro and tries to emulate Mathis’ locker room demeanor to this day with the Eagles.

Then Sherman said that’s exactly what he did when he signed with the Bucs.

He said he quickly made it clear to his new Bucs teammates he didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes.

“Some dudes try to overstep that,” Sherman said of veterans added to an established team. “Like, I am in a situation in Tampa, they’ve got a bunch of young kids that have played at a high level. They brought me in to kind of, you know — everybody kind of got beat up — to weather the storm.

“That’s what I just wanted to know when I came in [with the Bucs]. Like ‘Hey, I’m not here to take nobody’s spot. I’m in here to win. That’s it. Whatever it takes to win. Whether that’s me playing or y’all playing, whoever is playing. I ain’t trying to take no food off of your table. I’m trying to put food on your table. So let’s do this together.’

“When you come in with that mindset, I think it lets everybody relax a little bit. It takes the tension out of the room.”

No wonder the Bucs wanted to sign this guy. This is an absolute definition of a true pro. Sherman wants to win, whatever it takes. If that means he’s on the sidelines and coaching up Jamel Dean or tipping off Mike Edwards to something he saw a receiver do, whatever.

Sherman sees the true goal here: Wins.

It’s not about how many snaps, it’s about getting fitted for a new ring.

(Oh, and Sherman ended his podcast picking his fantasy team for the week. He selected both Tom Brady and Mike Evans. Sherman said, “I’m not saying I have any inside information.” He also didn’t say he didn’t.)

Love Sherman. Way less of a punk than Crabtree.

  2. Parrishbucsfan Says:

Hopefully he’s back when we play the “aints” and famous Jameis. How many will Sherman pick off America’s greatest quarterback!

  3. Crickett Baker Says:

I really like how he talks. Now if he can just play without injuries and really help us win! Maybe Tom can help him get his body in better shape. I sure hope he listens as well as he speaks.

Richard Sherman is a Summa Cum Laude at Stanford, and as you can see right away he is sharp. Intelligence is way more than just how good someone is with words or numbers, and he is showing it. Very glad he is on the team, the guys around him are going to improve whether he is on the field or in the defensive back room or locker room.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  5. DoooshLaRue Says:

Remember back when grammar and intelligence went hand in hand.

    I sure be remembering……know what I’m sayin?

    Blast away social warriors…..

  6. Bruce Blahak Says:

Great to hear this. What a culture change at one buc!

  7. webster Says:

Grammer and intelligence only went hand and hand to the idiots that thought grammer meant you were intelligent. They truly intelligent ones understood it takes more than grammer to define intelligence. But idiots like doosh would think master p who is worth 500 mil self madevwith all of his real estate, restuarants, creating/making his own movies, pioneering that musical artist didnt need sign with well spoken grammer music companies who ultimately cheat their artist out of millions with shady contracts so he did it all himself. But because master p spoke and possibly used a double negative he was unintelligent to the doosh idiot. How many well spoken “intelligent” people lose all there money in ponzi schemes? To bad their great grammer didnt tell them they were signing over all their life savings. But at least they speak great english eerrrr “intelligent”.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Very glad Sherman is a Buc……we’ll need him down the stretch…..

  9. Mike C Says:

I get it Doosh, however we have a ton of people in college using proper grammer to be idiots all over the place……

  10. Jmarkbuc Says:

Just some locker room talk, Doosh.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Doosh

You don’t be havin’ an easy time getting no job other than NFL with bad grammar.

  12. SufferingSince76 Says:

    Grammar police are annoying.

  13. David Says:

I’ll keep saying it, all this playing time for everyone is going to pay off down the stretch when everyone is back healthy. I think the defense just continues to get better and better

  14. Greg Says:

It all changed when TB12 was signed. That knowledge is not measurable in words but in actions and performance. Makes you wonder why the Patriots wouldn’t allow Tom to help in New England eh??

  15. BucsCoolade Says:

Yeah Greg.. he kinda helped for 20 years and he was ready for the Sr. Tour in fla. with better roster.

Yup Sherman the nice guy.. kinda deflecting attention from whether he can perform at functional high level any more..
