“Honest” Jalen Hurts

October 13th, 2021

Dangerous Eagles QB Jalen Hurts.

One word sprang to mind for Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles yesterday when he was asked about Eagles dual-threat quarterback Jalen Hurts.

“Honest.” In other words, Bowles believes Hurts prevents a defense from focusing too much on one element, such as the run or the pass.

Why? Bowles said Hurts can hurt a defense either way.

“It’s tough because he keeps you honest – anybody that can throw like a pro quarterback and run like a running back,” Bowles said of Hurts. “He has elusiveness, as well, and he’s very bright and he’s very tough to bring down.

“If you try to attack him too much, he’s going to hurt you down the field and if you don’t attack him enough, he’s going to hurt you with his legs. He keeps you very honest and that’s a great thing.”

Maybe Joe is just being too flippant, but Joe sure hopes Hurts tries to be a running back. Most teams have abandoned the run against the Bucs because it is just a waste of time, the Bucs run defense is that good.

So Joe welcomes Hurts trying to run the ball. That just may be the kiss of death for the Eagles tomorrow.

Careful what you wish for. LVD won’t be there flying from sideline to sideline to clean up…

  2. Leighroy Says:

Hurts deliberately trying to run the ball vs scrambling on broken plays feel like two different things, with the latter possibly a vulnerability (especially with no LVD).

I’d like to see Devin white used as a spy often in this game, just like Mr. Derrick Brooks used to spy Vick back in the day.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

We haven’t played a run-first QB since Arians has been here, so I’m not sure what to expect, but I’m with ‘unbelievable’ in that without LVD, we should not be taking anything for granted.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Leighroy – the 2002 game, when Vick comes to Tampa, with all the hype in the world behind him, only to see the Bucs destroy him, to watch Derrick Brooks run him down, it’s a fun game to rewatch.

White hasn’t been great in coverage. Let him spy hurts everywhere and make his night miserable.

    Excellent idea!

Is it Thursday yet? Want to see bucs now

I have a feeling Vita Vea is going to go off and get his full sack on Thursday night.

Most important to have the offense score on their first 2-3 drives and ratchet up the pressure on the Eagles’ offense. They’ll surely do something stupid.

  11. John Sinclear Says:

Don’t sell this kid short! He will eat this defensive secondary alive, and he’s hard to catch. Advice to the defense is – lose the Gatorade and replace it with Red Bull for tomorrow night.

Only reason he left Alabama was because of Tua Mania.

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs better bring it. I smell a trap game here. Hurts is very unpredictable. And he can run. Defense is going to have really bare down. And the Eagles Defense is no slouch either. I would not bragg buc fans until…after the Win.

  13. Jeff Says:

    Eagles 27 Bucs 24.

  14. View from 132 Says:

I’m very glad to see Hurts on the schedule, as it looks like Murray in Arizona will be in the playoffs and there are few reasonable simulations. Hurts isn’t there yet, but contain rules, scramble coverages, all of it… great live fire work for the defense.

I think this should be a Devin White game

  16. David Says:

I see Edwards back for help with Smith at receiver.
I see Whitehead up close with White making sure the run and short stuff gets stuffed.

    LVDs Speed will be missed

Hmm last time Bucs played running QB was Mahomes, how’d he do, oh and Roger’s likes to run from time to time. Ain’t gone happen, though Hill from NO was pretty effective.

  18. Mike Says:

Blow out all day long Brady will score to many points and the eagles be playing sloppy ball to catch up

  19. Brandon Says:

QB running on passing plays is a completely different animal than an actual running game. Dumb thing to wish for.
