Carlton Davis “Will Be A While”

October 4th, 2021

Glum over Carlton Davis.

The way the look on Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians quickly changed spoke volumes to Joe.

Arians was talking up defensive players  asked to take a whole lot of snaps last night that either they didn’t expect or never had before, and how they came through.

Arians was smiling and looked like he was about to order a drink. Then he was asked about Carlton Davis. And that smile quickly left his face and he suddenly looked like a man who just lost his dog.

“It will be a while it looks like,” Arians said with a sigh, offering no other details.

Davis suffered a quad injury on special teams, likely playing on special teams because the Bucs had too many injuries. On TV it looked as though he blew a hamstring.

The Bucs’ media relations department referred to Davis’ injury as a quad injury. Joe knows if baseball players get a quad, they are out for weeks.

It’s getting dire in the secondary. They’re now without their top three corners, two of which might be out multiple weeks.

Arians also said, without any specifics, that safety Antoine Winfield was not on the field for the final two defensive sets. NBC reported he was being evaluated for a concussion.

Is Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht going to have to swing a trade?

YES Last time I checked we still have all our draft picks next year. GET IT DONE LICHT.

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

Why was he even playing special teams when he was already banged up??????? Since we can’t FIRE Bruce, the Special TEAMs coach needs to be fired NOW 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

  3. Colonel Angus Says:

Who trades good CBs? Will have to pony up some high draft picks to rebuilding team.

  4. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

There is absolutely no reason that our best and only healthy starting CB should be out there on a meaningless punt return. Has this coaching staff never heard of risk analysis? Absolutely stupid and insane, and could easily cost us games.

  5. Medicated Pete Says:

Winfield concussion protocol says Bucs Radio

  6. Hodad Says:

He grabbed the top of his thigh, not the back of his leg, so I’ll assume it’s the quad. Now he has two injuries instead of one. Doubt any trades will happen, who’s giving away good corners? Next man up.

  7. Leighroy Says:

Our practice squad + Dick Sherm should be enough against the fins

  8. Joe Says:

Come on guys, you do know that someone had to play special teams? And maybe you weren’t aware the Bucs had guys who were injured and couldn’t play?

Joe is guessing Davis was in for Jamel Dean who does play special teams. Davis has played special teams since the Bucs drafted him.

  9. Jerry Says:

Secondary is a major concern. The injuries are now reached a critical point. Have to start digging into other teams preseason tapes and try to find some guys from the street.

  10. Joe Says:

Davis has been on special teams every season he’s been in the league.

  11. tampabuscsbro Says:

Yes the backups could have played ST. We HAD one healthy corner left. He is now gone He should have not been out there on ST with the state of our secondary.

    Also any updates on Winfield?

  12. unbelievable Says:

    Dropping like flies.

At this point I think they have to make a trade. Cockrell played well and Sherman looked good for just coming to the team 3 days ago. But we need bodies in a bad way.

And good CBs on bad teams? Joe Haden maybe I dunno?

  13. tampabuscsbro Says:

Okay fine then take him out this game cause he is all we have left.

  14. BucsBro Says:

Ok, I think I solved the “why Davis playing special teams?” thing.

If you go to Arians postgame presser on Youtube, someone asks him a question around 3:00 into the video. I cant hear the question. But Arians answers that the defense was kept in just in case the Pats faked the punt. So Davis (who I think Arians was talking about) may have been in just because the Bucs were concerned the Pats might fake the punt.

Unless Arians is talking about another player getting hurt here, I think this may explain the Davis issue. Someone with a better sound system can try and listen to what the reporter asked.

  15. PassingThru Says:

Sometimes good CBs are available. The problem is that most good CBs available for trade are older, so they are no longer on rookie contracts. The upshot is that the Bucs haven’t the cap space to trade for guys like that.

  16. BucsBro Says:

Yeah pretty sure Arians is talking about Davis there. He said it was a “punt safe” situation, meaning keeping the defense on the field in case a punt is faked.

Just dumb luck then. And the Pats did run a number of gimmick plays tonight, so yeah it was a concern.

  17. Joe Says:

    Also any updates on Winfield?

No. Arians will likely have an update in his presser tomorrow afternoon.

  18. Oxycodoms Says:

Bucs dont have depth to trade for anyone

  19. tampabuscsbro Says:

Oxy we still have our draft picks last time I checked and a borderline useless tight end.

  20. J Dubb Says:

Xavien Howard out of Miami or Stephon Gilmore out of New England may be available but I am not sure how we could fit their contracts in,

  21. Rod Munch Says:

J Dubb – Both would be very expensive and it would be very difficult to trade for either since, as far as I know, NFL teams can not hold back cap space on a trade.

We do have the option of getting rid of OJ, that frees up $6m, but you’d need quite a bit more for either of the two, and you’d have McElroy as your #2 TE right now. But hey, Tanner Hudson is still on someone’s practice squad I believe, so he could be resigned.

  22. Tony Says:

What about giving Malcolm butler a look think he’s unemployed??

  23. Rod Munch Says:

OTC says the Bucs have $3.5m in cap space right now, so lets assume that is accurate.

Getting rid of OJ frees up $6m.

You still need cap space for other injuries, so you can’t just say you have $9.5m. You’d have to replace OJ, lets just say that’s $700k, so you’re at $8.8m. You’d probably still need to keep at least $2.5m free for additional injuries, so now you’re down to $6.3m.

If you’re going to trade for someone, in that case, if they’re any good and you can afford them, it’s likely because they’re still on their rookie deals, which means you’re going to give up some valuable picks. Maybe we can trade Trask for someone.

  24. BucsFan413 Says:

Pulled my quad during baseball season my junior year of high school and I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. The grimace on his face said it all. My quad has never felt the same since. I actually had a lump in my leg for a couple of years from the scar tissue from the pull (SN: I now have a regimen i go through to warm up for basketball at Y on Wednesday mornings just to make sure my quad is good to go. Hello elliptical bike and quad stretches)

Carlton is a world class athlete and 1000 times in better shape than I’ve ever been in and I’m sure the training staff will do everything they can to get him back to playing condition at the least. But if his quad injury is anything like mine was, then pain tolerance will be half the battle. I still hate the PT for the rehab regiment they put me through. Good luck on a speedy recovery CD24

  25. Will Says:

I didn’t read all the comments but was no one aware that or even thought about the fact that he was out there in case they ran a fake punt. Bucs get tricked all the time with throw backs and gimmick plays. Hate that he got hurt on that play. Bruce was asked about it and said he was out there in case of a fake.

  26. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

Davis has been on special teams all along,.. might I suggest that his value to the team may have risen in light of the fact that he was the only starting corner we had left! C-mon Joe.. you will criticize Sherman when he never missed a tackle, never had someone run by him,… But you shill for the coaching staff when they really are making a stupid decision? Hmmmmmm…..

  27. adam from ny Says:

we almost have no secondary left…it’s wild…

    dean
    bunting
    davis
winfield (he’s gonna sit at least a week or 2, with short week in philly)

can somebody please call donnie abraham, cedric brown and mark cotney asap…

also if sherman is “going the distance and going for speed” he might wanna cut his hair…for real…he could get slightly faster and it is hot down here…just athought…

also i never realize sherman is that tall…he’s a couple inches taller than out tallest DBs

  28. SB~LV Says:

    Ronde Barber played special teams!

  29. Buc92’ Says:

Give a 2nd up for xavien Howard , pair him with Sherman . Howard still wants out Miami & can be had …Miami isn’t paying him @joe

    GoBucs!

  30. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

To be thin on CBs, BA should be given the dumbest coach of the game award for playing Davis on Special Teams. WTF

  31. Buchead588 Says:

Well i really like Herb Miller Played Great at end of last season even had a int also had a great camp an made plays I think with the Schedule we have coming up we should be alright Dean should be back this week an SMB should be soon after Delaney was thrown to the wolves again the Rams an Ross Cockrell can play as well when needed Sherman will only get better I mean our defense woke up yesterday with sack an all the Guys who played yesterday in secondary will get better we are in good shape next 3-5 weeks with who we play look at our opponents Defense should really start to shine again an loved seeing all the Sacks yesterday I believe our Rook JTS-9 had 2 himself this is all without JPP

  32. AMI_Chris Says:

Why did everyone (including Al and Cris) seem to think it was hamstring? Davis immediately grabbed for his thigh pad. I said “quad” as soon as I saw it.

  33. SOEbuc Says:

    Adam from ny

Lmao. I was telling my dad the same thing about Sherman’s hair and aerodynamics.

  34. Brandon Says:

“It looked like a hamstring”… yet it was clearly a quad.

  35. Nutterbuccer Says:

Pierre Dessir played pretty well I think. I really thought he was gonna have that pick 6 in the third quarter I believe it was. Hopefully Jamal Dean gets back soon and I would like to see Dessir and him out there until Sherman gets his feet under him. Sherman was on the couch less than a week ago give it time. Won’t be the all pro he once was but should be adequate

  36. Pistol Pete Says:

Jags should have a fire sale. I’d be in favor of a trade for Shaq Griffin.

  37. Francisco Guzman Says:

Any idea when bunting might come back?

  38. Bucs since 76 Says:

I see no reason our best cornerback was on special teams when our depth at that position is weak to say the least. However, it was a non contact injury so he could have just as easily hurt his quad in pass coverage. No sense crying over spilled milk just need to find help A S A P!!!!!n
