“So Many Injuries That Nobody Would Ever Even Know About”

September 15th, 2021

Chris Godwin

It’s always thought-provoking when players talk about their teammates gutting through hidden injuries.

Is the guy injury-prone? Is he better talent than he appears? Is he mentally tougher than fans are aware? Will management be afraid to pay him big money?

Mike Evans was asked why his running mate, Chris Godwin, should have fans’ total appreciation.

“His toughness is what we definitely should appreciate the most,” Evans told Bucs Total Access on WDAE radio. “Super tough player, plays through so many injuries that nobody would ever even know about, but he goes out there and looks like his 100 percent. That’s just the guy he is.”

No, Joe is not that guy who’s going to start blubbering about injury reports and potential violations of league rules when it comes to reporting injuries.

But Joe is always interested to know what’s happening behind the scenes with players. Godwin battled major allergy issues as a rookie, and he’s mentioned the physical toll of the game a lot over the years for a young player. Of course, last year he gutted through a broken finger that was repaired with several pins — at wide receiver!

Joe loves Godwin’s toughness and the way he shakes off the occasional bad play, but Joe would love more to hear how Godwin had an injury-free 2021 season.

Chris needs to learn how to hit the deck. I’d rather have him healthy than gain a couple extra yards

  2. Long John Says:

    Pete do you ever sleep?

  3. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Major allergy issues?

  4. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Love Chris Godwin. He really does take a beating out there. He’s not the shiftiest guy after the catch so he takes more shots than most. I’ve questioned his mental toughness in the past but he always seems to come up big in big moments even after a mistake or two. That Dallas game pretty much sums up Godwin and his career here.

  5. Buczilla Says:

Godwin is balls when healthy. Vita is too, but these folks need to stay healthy man. If they do that?!? Sky is the limit.

  6. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Hope Godwin holds up for the next few years. This has me concerned, especially in a contract year.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Is there a list of injuries that are required to be reported?…….surely not the nagging bruises, strains & pulls…….

Has anyone noticed that it seems every time Mike Edwards is hit….he goes to the sideline looking like he’s hurt…..but comes back in on the next play.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Just noticed that the Bucs added a veteran corner, one who I’ve never heard of … Pierre Desir. Bucs are now his 6th team, but it looks like he had a couple good years (2018 & 2019) with Indy before moving on to the Jets & Ravens last season.

But hey, with SMB out for awhile any help is appreciated.

  9. Thomas Edrington Says:

Best ability is Avail-ability (sorry OJ Howard)

  10. Georger Says:

Bucs should of signed him long term. Now he will cost 22 million plus

  11. Listnfrmafar Says:

I can’t believe I am writing this again, I agree with Pete. Godwin needs to work on avoiding the big hit. Take a lesson from Brady, that is how he has survived and he works on his timing of the fall to avoid getting clobbered. I agree go for it when you need a first down or on the goaline but other than that go down the living to play another play is far more valuable than aggressively trying to grab a few more yards.

  12. PassingThru Says:

Pierre Desir is a good signing. He’s an older vet who is on the wrong side of 30, but what you’re looking for is someone who won’t make mistakes.

He isn’t the answer, but he’s a good stop-gap measure.

  13. DoooshLaRue Says:

I don’t want to see Godwin or Evans go but I think one, most likely CG14 moves on next year.
Too much $$$ for him and ME13 combined.

  14. Hodad Says:

It’s a tough sport, played by tough men. I can imagine 99% of the leagues players will be hurting within the next few games. I don’t know how they do it, that’s why so few really can.

  15. teacherman777 Says:

    Pete is right.

Chris Godwin takes some awkward hits.

Like in the preseason against Houston. He got spun around and took a nasty hit in his back.

He needs to hit the deck as Pete said.

  16. Ed Says:

Godwin’s courage is fantastic. His pass catching ability is better than 65% of NFL receivers. What he isn’t is shifty after a catch. He’s full throttle and at point of being tackled many times he is in an upright position.

I would love to see him get a little bit of Mike Evans’ ability to sense the hit and hit the turf. If Godwin is always getting cloubered then what good was the extra 5 yards of YAC?

  17. Crickett Baker Says:

Yeah. Brady’s moves could help him. When a reporter asked Arians about Brady’s health during a sack, Arians replied, “He’s ok. He folds up like a cheap tent”.
