“Heavy” Returned With Good Results

September 20th, 2021

“Heavy” specialist was busy

Joe was ranting about the inevitable Josh Wells return against the Falcons on the Ira Kaufman Podcast last week and indeed he showed up.

After no snaps on offense against the Cowboys, backup-tackle Wells was a busy man yesterday as he was through the stretch run last season.

The Bucs ran lots of “heavy” packages in December, January and February, with Wells entering the game as a sixth lineman and/or eligible tight end. They got back to that yesterday.

Joe doesn’t have exact snap counts, but Wells got plenty of action (guessing 10 snaps) on run plays and pass blocking. He did well, and Joe must admit the Bucs have an invincible feel to the line when Wells enters the game.

With 10:53 remaining, Wells checked in again and the Bucs pinched Donovan Smith inside and let Wells handle the Falcons’ right edge rusher. The result was Wells getting the job done and Tom Brady having time for a 26-yard strike to Mike Evans over the middle.

Two plays later Chris Godwin was in the end zone and the Bucs took a commanding 35-25 lead.

Joe’s glad the Bucs went to back what worked for them en route to a Super Bowl win. Joe expects to see plenty more of Wells against the Rams.

We got a solid real solid oline. Stennie, Wells. They rotate Ali to C if need be. Give Hainsey as much time to develop as needed. Teach him LT because Smith is doing what Smith does best. Getting run around on the QB left side. Doesn’t everyone else see it’s always 76? Needs to be DROPPED 2022. Need his chump change.

    @SOEbuc

Pete sees it SOEbuc. I wouldn’t get rid of #76 but I’d give him help as much as possible

  3. Wild Bill Says:

Ya when Smith gets beat he gets beat really bad. Most of the time he is very stout but when he is bad he is horrid.

  4. ModHairKen Says:

If you DSmith haters talked the same way about other players who had 1or 2 bad plays, you might have some credibility.

You just hop on pop. Because you heard someone else do it. Like sheep.

This ten game winning streak is as much DSmith as anyone else.

    Study some film, boys.

  5. My Momma says Says:

Smith gave up on his block too soon which lead to the sack of Brady (he stood straight up thinking he was done). My Momma says she thought that maybe he had gotten over this laziness practice of his late last year, but she was wrong.

  6. RustyRhinos Says:

Wells taking on the LT and winning, while Smith goes inside, sounds like a dress rehearsal to a potential look see what we got in Wells for the future.

  7. Bucs Win Says:

ModHairKen must be 76’s burner account.

  8. Stanglassman Says:

LT is by far the most difficult job on the OL. Probably the 2nd most difficult position in football behind only Qb. DSmith is one of the better LTs in the game. We all wish we had the best one ever or Smith was consistently great. Those guys are rare sometimes there are zero of those guys in the league, usually only a few. Every time I hear someone complain about Smith they never say who should go in and replace him. Just flipping a great RT to L often doesn’t work. Your teams OL just get worse across the board.

    Play action baby

  10. My Momma says Says:

My Momma says you all should stop making excuses for DSmith. He should be giving maximum effort, not quit on plays. You’ll sing a different tune if his loafing gets Brady injured.
