Digging Hole With Missed Opportunities

September 26th, 2021

Missed a key pick early.

When you are playing shorthanded against arguably the best team in the NFC, you better take advantage of your chances, especially early given that Sean McVay has never blown a halftime lead.

The Bucs, quite literally, dropped the ball with three missed big-play chances in the first quarter.

With the Rams in their own territory, a tipped pass landed right in Jamel Dean’s breadbasket.

And. He. Dropped. It.

Later, Tom Brady let loose with a pass too early because of pressure but it was one of the better throws Joe has seen from Brady. It was a hair long and it fell into the hands of Rob Gronkowski but it was just a fraction too long and Gronk couldn’t pull it in.

Then, Jordan Whitehead popped the ball loose with a hard hit but the Bucs couldn’t come up with the fumble.

Who knows if the Bucs could have come away with (at least) 14 points from those plays? But as you can add up for yourself, not taking advantage of those almost-made plays in the first quarter likely cost the Bucs big time.

All of North America just witnessed this debacle. How sweaty & bloated is Jason Licht right now?

  2. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Missed opportunities and horrible refs and poor execution and pathetic pass rush and lousy coverage and and and…take your pick!!!

  3. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Oh, piss poor running effort and too much pressure on Brady…anything I missed?

  4. EA Says:

That could have been the play that turned this game around but in all honesty the bucs were just overwhelmed on all phases.

  5. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Stop the ref comments Naples. Face it, we got spanked on both sides of the ball.

  6. B-Bro Says:

I guess all the undefeated season talk can now be over and we can move on and play and try to pickup a d back or two

  7. Say What? Says:

Jamel Dean = hands of stone.

His dropped pick was a huge missed opportunity.

  8. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Alvin…I don’t deny we got our @sses kicked by the Rams…but we also got our @sses kicked by the refs. 2 TD plays had penalties by the Rams NOT called…hard to beat a team that is beating you when there’s any extra opponent on the field.

  9. Adrnagy Says:

Over reacting. 17 game season. 3rd game.
    Relax.

  10. NaplesBucsFan Says:

BTW Alvin did you miss all the other reason I posted but you choose to comment on my ref comment????

  11. bucfanforever Says:

And we wonder why no one makes the pro bowl. I don’t remember Lavonte David being pointed out a single play this game. But then again Joe Buck was busy texting Stafford trying to arrange a date.

  12. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Bucsfan…no one played at a pro bowl level today…

  13. Architek Says:

Yeah man this secondary isn’t nowhere near the playoffs level.

  14. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Architek…the defense ain’t the same at all…no pass rush and no coverage, not just one phase…where’s LVD and DW????

  15. Looking at YOU! Says:

    Oh no, we suck again

  16. kgh4life Says:

Not surprised by the result. Sean Mcvay is just leaps and bound better than the 100 coaches on the Bucs staff combined.

  17. BomTrady Says:

Naples might have a point, they only called 1 penalty on the Rams the entire game…1 penalty, come on! They called 7 on the Bucs.

Maybe not why we lost today but I am sure it contributed to it. The Rams are good, we are missing 4 or 5 starters, and we beat ourselves. But the refs helped the Rams out a little bit.

  18. Jmarkbuc Says:

Rams protected their house, as they should have.

Joe is on to something, though…. These ain’t no gravediggers.. they’re hole diggers. We in bad shape, BA may even end up on the Injury Report.

  19. Wild Bill Says:

Hate on me if you want but I called this loss. I said no pass rush and weak pass defense would be fatal in this game. The Rams are tougher physically than the Bucs. Fat boy left tackle was beat early on. We all knew our backfield was depleted but still it was hard to watch. And what? One sack in three games? Their defense backs put a beat on our receivers. Rams earned it. STAFFORD out played the GOAT this time. And Tyron was not a factor. We have what should be easier games coming up. But our weaknesses were exposed before this game so who knows? Ps. I DID NOT like watching our team get beat down.

  20. JimmyJack Says:

Another big mistake in the 1st Q was Wells gagging up a crutial penalaty. Thanks for being ready for your single play chump. Gronk also had 2 costly pentalties in the first half as well.

Your not beating good teams with all the mistakes. We werent playing Dallas or Atlanta this week.

Hopefully all this will be old news and we peak in December. I dont think the Rams ate welcoming a rematch if we are firing on all cylinders!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  21. Pelsbuc61 Says:

    Jamel “Brick hands” Dean!

  22. dmatt Says:

I’ve said it multiple times on previous threads. JDean is outta his league. The guy play confused n responds like a deer in the headlight. After three years in the league he still play as if he’s learning on the job. Com on man, let’s get us some Richard Sherman, a player who’s good at reading offenses. Our pass defense sucks.

  23. Will Says:

Can anyone explain WTF Vita and Suh aren’t on the field on 1st and 2nd downs? Bowles calling plays too conservatively. You have back up corners in the best way to help them is to create pressure with your front.
Ex Bucs players and coach getting their revenge today. Lets heal up and maybe we’ll see them and get our revenge in the playoffs.

  24. PassingThru Says:

I was expecting a loss. The Rams match up well against the Bucs

Silver Lining: The coaching staff saw the Rams at full strength, giving Tampa Bay their best shot. The Rams saw a short-handed Bucs team. If these teams meet again (I expect it) it’ll be easier for the Bucs to game plan than vice versa. That doesn’t sound like much now but it might really help later.

  25. bucfanforever Says:

the Rams physicality stood out. Needs to be removed by the NFL.

  26. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Will

We got them in numerous third and longs. 1st and 2nd weren’t the problem, getting torched on third down.

  27. Leighroy Says:

Those 1st quarter plays were a chance to set a different tone for the entire game. But instead they squandered it.

  28. Will Says:

    Jmarkbuc
Good point I’m just not use to those guys being off the field that much. That was hard to watch so glad I didn’t follow my initial instict and say screw the price I’m going to the game. 1st game I’ve missed in Cali in a few years.

  29. MonkeyBucman Says:

I think we will be fine. Lack of a pass rush has me befuddled.

  30. Big Z Says:

Today’s Bucs was the team JW played with. Not taking up for him but no D and no running games you sling 40 plus. Hard to beat good teams without some balance. I felt like TB was in same situation as JW.

  31. Bucamania Says:

80% conversion rate on 3rd down they said late in the game. 80% is disgusting.

  32. adam from ny Says:

we got spunked by the rams…

  33. adam from ny Says:

and we have previous issues with these bastids…

    in 1979 the 9-0 championship game loss…

and the 11-6 championship “bert emanuel rule” game…

  34. MarkR Says:

W/o AB, JPP, and SMB we were likely to lose this game anyway. But the way the Rams handled our front 7 on passing downs was disturbing. We will not prevail this season w/o a much better pass rush.

  35. LakelandSteve Says:

Why in the heck is Vita Vea standing on the sideline while the Rams are throwing the ball all over the yard and we can’t get close to Stafford. It seemed like every time there was an important series or drive the camera would pan over to Vea standing on the sideline. I know these guys need a break every now and then but he was off the field a lot. I know we had injuries in the secondary but Bowles has to do better than that. If you are going to get shredded at least make it interesting and play man every now and then.

  36. Niva Says:

Now that the 20-0 dream is dead, the Bucs can just concentrate on fixing known weak areas. This game while being lopsided easily could’ve went the other way. Bucs really missed both AB and JPP.

I hope they lose a couple more regular season games. It will only make them hungry for the playoffs. Don’t worry too much folks.

  37. Merlin Says:

I don’t understand pick play offense pass interference. How is Gronks penalty different than the Rams pick play touchdown
