Tristan Wirfs Breaks Down Joe Tryon

August 8th, 2021

Props from Bucs’ star RT.

Joe may be biased, but if there is a better right tackle in the game than Tristan Wirfs, Joe wants to see him.

That’s how much Joe thinks of Wirfs.

So recently when Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians said “sometimes” rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon is “kicking” Tristan Wirf’s “@ss,” that’s really a bit too much for Joe to swallow.

In other words, Joe has to see that to believe it. Remember, only Khalil Mack was able to get past Wirfs for a sack last year.

(No, Joe is not calling Arians a liar. However, this claim seems to fit the legal slang term known as puffery. An exaggeration.)

So yesterday Joe recited Arians’ quote to Wirfs and asked if that was accurate. Let’s just say Wirfs didn’t exactly agree with his coach’s assessment that he got his arse kicked.

However, Wirfs did admit that Tryon can be a handful to block.

“Joe is a really good player – he’s got a lot of juice, a lot of energy, plays with a lot of leverage,” Wirfs said. “I mean he’s got long arms, he’s fast – you don’t see a lot of people that are built like him. He’s tough to handle sometimes.”

Then Wirfs went into a little detail of why Tryon is a challenge to block.

“Well, I think just getting your hands on him – he comes off the ball so fast,” Wirfs said. “In certain situations, like if I’m getting my eyes out to him late – if I’m in a shift or something – he gets his hands on me first, you really have to throw your feet back and sit down and sometimes it’s harder to recover from it.”

Wirfs added that pass rushers with long arms are “always tough to deal with.”

Just for reference, Jason Pierre-Paul has long arms. JPP’s wingspan is 81-inches long. That’s very good.

Tryon? His wingspan is 82¾.

I think Daquan Bowers had long arms, too. Let’s see a few real games first…

  2. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Sounds like a draft steal from me. As Writs puts it, Tryon has both the speed and length to dominate.

At 6’7″ Anthony Nelson has a wingspan of 83″. Curious if he gives Wirfs a workout?

  3. Tkras red Bozo lips Says:

His prototypical body makes my mouth water. Look at those legs, long levers, yet narrow shoulders so it’s difficult to get a good grip on him

  4. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Tryon is in the perfect position as rookie. He should be tied to JPPs hip all season, bc he was drafted to eventually take that position. Battling against this OL in practice will help him even more and he could be a huge asset come playoff time. We snake bitten Bucs fans need to forget the Daquans and Noah Spence nightmares. JL has found his formula for building the trenches. Tryon will be just fine.

  5. Biff Barker Says:

How much fan love does Tristen deserve?
.Just watched Wirfs’ block on Godwin’s end around to seal the Saints game. Film don’t lie.
    Licht deserves a parade.

  6. Izod Says:

If Tryon is as good as they are saying, and I’m with Joe as far as thinking it’s a bit exaggerated, then credit again to the personnel staff.

  7. mark2001 Says:

AMI.. Bowers never looked good as a pro…even in training camp.

  8. mark2001 Says:

At least one of the sports talking heads said guy could be the best pure pass rusher in the draft, as a remember. Wouldn’t that be something….

  9. Marine Buc Says:

If Tryon plays college ball last year and has as good a season as his Jr. year then he is probably a top ten pick.

We got one hell of a deal because he decided to sit out last year…

DaQuan Bowers was a BUM from Day 1

  12. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Not that Jason Licht isn’t any good because he is, but both Wirfs and Tryon basically fell to us, in the draft.
Both picks were total no brainers.
I agree that Wirfs is one of the best tackles in the NFL, and if Tryon can give him problems, look out!

  13. Marine Buc Says:

    D. Bowers had two bum knees before leaving Clemson. Mark Dominik (the worst GM in NFL history) took the bait and wasted a second round pick on him…

  14. geno711 Says:

If we are going to mention Daquon Bowers at pick 51, I will mention LeRoy Selmon at pick 1.

Joe Tryon was taken at pick 32. I will go out on a huge limb (sarcasm) and suggest that Tyron will be worse than Selmon and better than Bowers.

P.S. Bowers is a now a coach at USF.

  15. Jerry R Jones Says:

Pretty sure “The Parliment House” is missing their Bozo.

  16. Natural Selection Says:

@AlabamaBucsFan: The rest of that quote was about Nelson and his length. Wirfs said he and Anthony worked out during the pandemic offseason. A couple of players have mentioned Nelson unsolicited in responses about Tryon, but everyone sounds genuinely excited about Joe. I’m looking forward to these preseason games and joint practice reports for both the 2nd team OLBs.

  17. Perimeter Blocker Says:

On the lighter side I still think it is funny he wears “Bobby Boucher” ‘s #9…. Lol

  18. Defense Rules Says:

@Marine Buc … “We got one hell of a deal because he decided to sit out last year”.

Exactly. And had we been drafting in the Top-5 instead of at #32, we probably wouldn’t have picked him, so it all worked in our favor.

Regardless however, Bucs still had to pull the trigger on the pick. And our coaching still has to develop the pick. Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together?

  19. Joe in Michigan Says:

Chris Apple: Do you remember when the Bucs traded up 1 spot to take Wirfs at 13, and many Bucs fans cried that Licht was “wasting draft picks”? I do.

  20. PassingThru Says:

I posted something along those lines maybe a week ago. Wingspan on an EDGE/OLB player is extremely important as it can give him an advantage is hand fighting OTs and TEs. It’s also important for deflecting passes. Tryon has excellent wingspan, his measurable is about the 82nd percentile for DEs per mockdraftable, and of course Tryon isn’t even a DE.

  21. firethecannons Says:

we will see what will be in preseason Noah Spence was mentioned. if he passes the preseason with flying colors then.

  22. Cobraboy Says:

@Joe in MI: or when the Bucs took White at #5, the casuals went nuts with “never, never take a LB that high!”

  23. Kgh4life Says:

    @AMI_ Chris

Daquan Bowers was a lazy football player: Didn’t like working out, showing up to camp overweight, he just didn’t work on his craft.

  24. BradyBucs Says:

    Joe In Michigan,

Hahahahaha. I’ll never forget being on board during that draft, and the days that followed… so many on this site says how Licht was an idiot for trading the 4th rounder to move up one spot with Lynch to secure Wirfs. They all said Licht was so stupid to pay so much for Wirfs and how got “abused” in the draft.

Yet Wirfs was the last of the “Big Four” linemen for that draft and the Dolphins would end up drafting an OT just 4 picks later, and the Dolphins certainly had tons of draft capital could have easily moved ahead of the Bucs to grab Wirfs.

It was a very smart move by Licht to give up a 4th rounder to secure a guy that many thought the Bucs wouldn’t even have a chance to draft at #13.

But boy how all those homers that cried that night about giving up the 4th round pick and calling Licht stupid are no where to be found now.

  25. SOEbuc Says:

That 6’9” wingspan. Damn. No better vet than JPP is there to coach this kid up.

  26. Oprahsbrowntaco Says:

    I hope he is fantastic

  27. mark2001 Says:

White? Wirfs? Now Tryon. At what point do we give Jason a little slack? Until he misses on an early pick, I’ll give him some slack. Trask and Hainsey? I think we will have to wait another year to really know.

  28. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

    “You lied to me?”

    “I didn’t lie, I was bullsh!tting you”

    Elwood Blues to Joliet Jake

  29. Bird Says:

Cant wait to see this kid play

  30. Jmarkbuc Says:

Is it me or did Licht drafts suddenly get better over the last two years? Seems like he was being run out of town just before then…🤔🤔

  31. BucEmUp Says:

Kid will be a stud, lets make sure Brady stays on the coaching staff in a few years so he has a good team to play for

  32. Florida man Says:

At this point I’m done doubting Jason Licht and our college scouts.
Kids in a great spot for success beside guys that know how to get there from the edge. He’s gonna be a really nice addition for this team.

  33. SlyPirate Says:

I cannot wait to track how Tryon does vs the other DE in the 1st:
    18 – Jaelan Phillips
    21 – Kwity Paye
    28 – Payton Turner
    30- Greg Rousseau
    31 – Odafe Oweh

I’m feeling like we got the best of the bunch.
