Tom Brady Explains His Admiration Of Giovani Bernard

August 25th, 2021

It’s not easy to impress Tom Brady, but the Bucs’ new offensive toy has found more than one way to do it.

Joe’s referring to veteran running back/receiving back Giovani Bernard, the free agent from the Bengals. Bernard, 29, brings versatility to the Bucs with 342 career catches and a 4.0 yards-per-rush average through about 1,000 career carries.

Before Bucco Bruce Arians was raving about him on SiriusXM NFL Radio yesterday, Brady took his turn.

“Obviously his skill set is one thing. but really his professionalism is what’s really been great for me to see. I’ve been around a lot of really professional guys over the years and Gio’s just right there,” Brady said of Bernard.

“You know, he comes in attentive, ready to go, brings it every day, wants to learn, just trying to do the right thing, it means a lot to him. It’s just great to see, especially my standpoint who’s been doing this 22 years; I think I appreciate the guys that do this at a high level consistently year-in, year-out, and then when you see it daily, day-in and day-out, that’s a great thing for me to see. I know Gio’s going to be successful in whatever he does in life, you know, because he’s doing things the right way.”

It’s no surprise to hear Brady express love for a teammate, even a practice squad guy, but to have the ultimate professional player admire your professionalism is very impressive for Bernard.

Joe can only imagine how fired up Bernard is to escape the mess that is Cincinnati, where there has been no winning season since 2015.

Gio is exactly the perfect player to be at Brady’s side on every play because He is both an accomplished blocker and a great runner and has great hands to catch passes too out of the backfield and Brady likes how much effort Gio puts out too.

  2. Gofortheface30 Says:

Also – Others won’t say it for obvious reasons (and I get it) but I will. Gio is a different kind of person. Let’s just say emotionally, intellectually etc he is a higher caliber kind of person . No that doesn’t make guys like Rojo and Fournette bad people or whatever, but let’s just say Gio is a bit more buttoned up, higher IQ, he’s stable. You can simply count on guys like that to pick up on offense fast, not miss assignments or practice etc

  3. Bird Says:

Gio is a stud. Have you heard some of his press conferences ?

    Smart cool cat

And brady has confidence that he will catch the ball on 3rd and 3 or 3rd and 4

    Love it

I heard about his pass protection for a smaller back. Havent seen it yet.
Love to see him lay some guys out.

The Missing Link for BradyWorld: the perfect trustworthy receiving back…

Exactly…on point….Gio is an addition to our powerful lineup of weapons for Brady……to think otherwise is just plain foolish….

There are actually those out there that claim Bernard will take away from our great receiving corps…….they simply don’t know football….

  6. Hodad Says:

By moving the chains converting 3rd downs Gio actually gives our receivers more opportunities. Brady didn’t have that security back to check down to last year, he does now.

  7. Wild Bill Says:

He’ll ya Hodad. So many times last season we watched swing backs drop passes and kill drives. This guy fills a gaping hole in a Brady led offense. Move da sticks, win da games. And I ain’t from NY or NJ or Boston.

  8. Listnfrmafar Says:

James White, Shane Vereen, Damian Woodhead, Kevin Faulk etc. Brady LOVES a good check down RB.

  9. Steve Burke Says:

Check down my a*s, everything around Gio will be an illusion

  10. BillyBucoff Says:

An illusion will probably work its way in, but no way all the time.
Foolish to throw the ball 30 yards when you need 3. A la Jaymiss.

You won’t see Brady force as many balls, and I bet he has less picks this year.
If they tackle him good play, but he will win more than he loses.

Tampa is gonna love Gio this year.
I bet we throw a screen on 3rd and 20 at some point this season and he picks it up.

The rich got WAY richer this year.

  11. DaBux Says:

9 TDs, 7 rec, 2 rushing. 230 yds rushing, 480 yds receiving. That’s my bid. The Bucs FINALLY have a screen pass game inside opponents 20-30 yard line which will be DEVESTATING.

  12. Long time Brady fan says Says:

James White and Gio Bernard have memories from Pop Warner — White’s Pasadena Panthers and Bernard’s Boca Jets — to the shared backfield at national power St. Thomas Aquinas to the shared kitchen and living room in White’s home. “It was like having another brother,” James White said. To now sharing the same QB experience.

  13. Eddie Marz Says:

I’m a fan, but don’t run Ro -Jo and Furnette into the ground. Those guys can play. GO BUCS!

  14. TOM Says:

Gio is not only a great 3rd down back who is also great blocker. Just an all around great back & a true professional.
