Precision Led By Tom Brady

August 31st, 2021

Elite timing.

Joe has a lot of listeners to the Ira Kaufman Podcast rankled over the following.

Joe has absolutely nothing against Giovani Bernard. Nice pickup. Great depth. But when Joe sees the elite — and Joe means elite — downfield receivers the Bucs have, Joe cannot understand why anyone would want to fart around throwing the ball to a back in the flat.

This is not a knock against Bernard at all. Rather, it’s a bow of reverence to how good (elite) the receivers and tight ends are.

Joe thinks we got a taste of that Saturday night when Tom Brady just sliced and diced the Texans’ starting defense at will and marched the Bucs to touchdowns on successive drives.

Brian Baldinger of NFL Network did a film breakdown on Twitter of the Bucs offense. He was blown away by Brady and the receivers’ precision in clowning the Texans.

Again, Joe is not anti-Bernard, just pro-Bucs passing dominance. And that’s what it could be and maybe already is: Dominant.

Those two drives Saturday night sure got Joe heavy panting for next Thursday’s game against Dallas to open the season.

  1. Casual Observer Says:

Precision is the right word. They look ready.

  2. Asdf Says:

This is a BSPN level bad take.

Sometimes getting free yards with a check down vs taking a higher risk throw makes a lot of sense. It’s just another thing defenses have to worry about. Completely complimentary to the offense and an upgrade vs last years RBs that dropped several easy catches (swap the drop for catch…doesn’t take away from other weapons).

This is Brady we’re talking about. I think Joe should trust him to find the right place to go with the football….

  3. All lives matter Says:

It’s nice to know that play is there when needed.

  4. mark2001 Says:

Nice safety valve for Brady when he wants to move the chains, and the pass rush beats one of our O linemen.

  5. Vsyl Says:

The thing is: ofc Brady would go for 20+ yards play instead of a check down to bernard if he has the chance. But if he is not able to go down the field, it’s better to gain a few yards and possibly the first down on a check than throw the ball away or get a sack. This is what joe needs to understand. Even if the receiving corps is absolutely astonishing, they won’t be uncovered all the time.

  6. Infomeplease Says:

If the Buc’s offense plays like they did against the Texans, they are going to be hard to beat!!! Most plays had several receivers wide open. Hats off to BA, BL, and TB!! If course not all defenses the Buc’s will face are as lame as the Texans!! Dallas is in Big Trouble come Sept 9!!! BUCS 36 Dallas 14.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe continues to make a totally senseless point…..

We can have both….elite receivers….and occasional passes to a back, usually on third downs….
Furthermore….Bernard will be back on 3rd downs to protect Brady….and serve as a safety valve….not a primary receiver.

I’d like to see Joe ask Brady…..”Don’t you think things would be better without Gio?”

  8. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

This is why coaches coach and reporters report. Rbs that can catch are absolutely necessary when your great receivers can’t get open or the line can’t block in order to keep the sticks moving. Qbs NEED that outlet back to get a positive out of nothing. It’s not about wanting but needing them. How many balls did our rbs drop last year that would’ve gotten positive yards? Every drive is intended to score and rbs that can catch are PART of that happening.

  9. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I agree, Gio Bernard is just one more thing for defenses to worry about.
WE looked unstoppable against the Texans

  10. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Bernard is simply another tool in the toolbox for Brady to use when needed. Brady will not turn into a dink and dunk passer because of Bernard’s presence. He’ll still push the ball aggressively downfield to his elite receivers. Still, there will be times when the defense or circumstances dictate a different approach, and that is where Bernard will be valuable. Lee, embrace Bernard and be happy we have him in case of emergencies (or if we need to convert a third down in a tight game and our receivers are covered or the pass rush is fierce).

  11. Hodad Says:

Joe really? Even the best receivers aren’t always wide arse open. Teams will have to account for Gio giving our receivers a better chance of getting open. He also makes it less likely for teams to throw all out blitz’s at Brady for fear he’ll dump it to Gio for what could be big gains. Come on Joe, you should know this.

  12. Joe Says:

when your great receivers can’t get open

Let Joe know this fabulous secondary in the NFL that is going to shut down AB, Gronk, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Cam Brate/O.J. Howard.

How is it the Bucs won a Super Bowl and averaged 30 points a game without a Bengals reject in the backfield catching passes? 🤔

    The Bengals!

  13. Kentucky Buc Says:

Got to have somewhere to go when pressured.

  14. Cobraboy Says:

I was not at all impressed by Bernard in the PS, but it is the PS…

  15. JR Says:

Baldy just gave me the ‘chills!’

    LFG

  16. SickofLosing Says:

It’s not like they’re trying to only throw to the back out of the backfield for Pete’s sake. The back is an outlet/ security blanket for when the Nfl’s best receiving Corp is covered. And to keep the defense off balance with quick throws

  17. Jmarkbuc Says:

We’re talking about the Texans D.

I imagine Joe could dice up Hargreaves and company.

  18. timbucs2 Says:

Not saying they are going to center the O around a back catching the ball, but think of all those drops by RoJo and Lenny turning into catches this season.

Having an actual set of reliable hands by a blocking back is going to give DCs ulcers because there is no way to stop both that and the #1 WR corps in the league.

  19. Joe Says:

Bernard is an outlet when receivers are covered—especially 3rd down.

  20. James Says:

Brady is back to his old stance. Maybe center learned how to snap the ball consistently.

  21. sauron's eye Says:

Check downs move the chains. You don’t always have the ability to go down the field.

  22. Ben green Says:

It’s gonna be checkdown city out there. The montra for defending the bucs will be GTFB. If Bernard catches 10 balls, the defense has done it’s job. You’ll have to matriculate down the field. Most teams are stupid. Y’all know something about that pre Brady. Brady feasted on dumb gameplans and stupid head coaches. Can’t wait for y’all to see a real coach when y’all come calling

  23. SlyPirate Says:

The oline was balling out on that drive!!!

  24. August 1976 Buc Says:

    Why did they sign Gio?
Joe it is very simple, chain mover on 3rd down., increased time of possession.
Which means more rest for the Defense.
Son it actually affects offense and defense, that is huge.
And 1 all important fact is this, it is something Brady wants.
So like it or not, understand it or not, it is a staple in a Brady led offense.
And is not 8 years of Gio playing not enough evidence for you Joe to not get spooked by the game the Gio had in Houston, it is for me

Give the GOAT whatever he wants, and enjoy the historic ride in 2021-22

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  25. 1sparkybuc Says:

I suspect that Bernard is the best RB on the team when it comes to pass protection. That could be the difference between a W and a L when facing teams with a strong pass rush. A surprise run is also possible when a defense is all set up for a pass. His value is not strictly limited to an outlet pass. This is clearly an embarrassment of riches for the Bucs. Now if we can all just stay healthy..

  26. August 1976 Buc Says:

Hey Ben Green is that real Coach Billy B and his 47% percent lifetime winning percentage without Brady? Simply a losing record…..
    lol lol lol

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  27. Ben green Says:

Obviously you don’t know coaching. That alcoholic moonlighting as a head coach has polluted your collective brains. Who do you think taught Tom Brady how to play pro football? Alex Guerrero? Coaching matters in the NFL, unless you have superior talent like y’all. Brady picked you guys because you were loaded. Do you honestly think he could’ve lead any other team to a title? Save Kansas city, and the saints. He needs every bit of that talent around him. The last year in NE proved that. He can’t carry a team anymore, and that’s okay.

  28. CJBuc Says:

Ok Ben Green. The trade off is there is not another qb that wouldve even made the bucs a playoff team. Even with gronk and ab because they would not have played as a team.

  29. August 1976 Buc Says:

Ben Green, like it or not I stated a fact.
You have been posting your snarky comments on JBF for a while just like you did again today. My comment was a reality check, not a smart alec comment like you seem to consistently post for whatever reasons. You can say what you want, but again Billy B is at 47% win percentage without Brady.
    GO BUCS!!!!!
