“No Staff Meetings”

August 3rd, 2021

Bucco Bruce Arians

Once upon a time, when the Bucs brought back defensive coordinator Mike Smith for the 2018 season, Joe labeled the phenomenon “Status Woe.”

That line rattled a few cages at One Buc Palace.

Joe likes to bring up days of Bucs dread as a way to remind fans to savor the absolute ecstasy of the modern era. Don’t take a minute for granted. It’s beyond special. Just look at the Bucs roster assembled by general manager Jason Licht. It’s a friggin’ masterpiece.

Joe knows one guy who appreciates what he has and what he’s built. That’s Super Bowl champion head coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

Asked on NFL Network today, “How are you coaching differently?” Arians said he’s not.

“Really no different. I mean, our guys know what work looks like,” he explained.

Lavonte David and Tom Brady watch film, “and they know what work looks like,” Arians said. “They know what complacency looks like and I don’t have to say anything because they’re not going to allow it.”

So the roster leadership is top shelf and the head coach doesn’t even have to rule his staff with an iron hand.

“We don’t have staff meetings because everybody knows where to go and what to do,” Arians said.

Joe points to stuff like this when people say Arians looks like he’ll retire if the Bucs win another Super Bowl this season or at least get there.

If Tom Brady stays and the Bucs only lose a few coaches, why would Arians walk away from a dream job that isn’t overly demanding? Remember, this is only Arians’ ninth season as an opening day head coach.

why have meeting? just do what TB and LVD tell you to do. The team only broke through when they let TB take over late in the season.

step aside, the GOAT has the wheel.

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

The one good thing about Bruce constantly shooting his mouth off like NYC fireworks on 4th of July….is that he’s willing to tell on himself

  3. Steven007 Says:

Don’t take a minute for granted. Words of wisdom, Joe. My goodness, how many minutes of my life I devoted to subpar Buc ball. Trying desperately to live in the moment with this team. Why also having a healthy respect for the ugly history. Hopefully lessons learned here will allow us to never be doomed to repeat the failures of the past.

Six Sigma, operational efficiency courses, and every MBA program will teach you …

The #1 Rule to Meetings: Don’t have a meeting if you don’t need a meeting.

Looks like BA has his MBA in football operations.

Robert said it best “”step aside, the GOAT has the wheel.””
We were so fortunate to get Brady, so don’t kid yourself, we would not be where we are now, with Jameis.
I liked Coach Koetter, but his stupid loyalty to Smith cost him his job!
My football friends back in Seattle constantly remind me that Tampa has built a Monster Team!
We really have no weaknesses, and if we win it all again, we will go down as one of, if not THE Best Team, of all time.
The ONLY Problem with all the Tampa Sports teams winning is all the uncontrolled growth it is bringing.

  6. mark2001 Says:

True Sly.. no need to try to fix something that isn’t broken. Bruce treats each coach as a manager…with every one doing their job. And because he knows them well, they know his expectations. Bruce doesn’t need to micromanage them… or get to know them and connect with them. Everyone knows their job…everyone works hard…and Bruce trusts them. It is part of the organizational culture.

  7. mark2001 Says:

Chris… Koetter wasn’t good at developing players, either. Or supporting them in game situations. Or disciplining them. The icing on the cake that said it all was when Evans and Winston took it upon themselves to thump opposing players helmets and such, because Koetter wouldn’t take control and confront the officials and assure the players he had their back, As a person I liked him. As a HC…a Manager…second rate.

Would Arians fail to back up a player when the Officiating seemed to be slanted? Would he allow players to take it in their own hands to start something? Would he play the “see nothing Sgt. Schultz” card while it was going down…err…I didn’t see it? Would players feel like their HC didn’t have their back? The answer is no to all of them.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

So seems Prescott is worse than we thought, and both Wentz and Q. Nelson are having foot surgery.

Meanwhile, the Bucs staff is so connected they don’t even need meetings, and the big controversy is a fat WR.

Great time to be a Bucs fan!

  9. Mike Says:

So no pre meetings to discuss the meetings then? 🙂

  10. Cobraboy Says:

@Chris: Unless the Bucs run the table, they will never be considered the best team ever, just based on past history of team feckless fail.

  11. Steven007 Says:

Nightmare almost preseason for Indy so far. I hope the karma stays on our side so we can keep the righted ship afloat.

  12. Chesapeake Bay Bucco Says:

Hey Highly Medicated Pete, what the heck are you talking about re: “Bruce constantly shooting his mouth off like NYC fireworks on 4th of July…”? BA is candid, for sure, but shooting his mouth off? Never. I guess you would prefer a standard coach-speak coach who never really answers a question, huh? Put the bong down!

  13. Leighroy Says:

Mike, as I sit here checking JBF, before a work meeting to discuss the official minutes of a past work meeting, your comment hits WAY too close to home!! lol

  14. EA Says:

Hey Joe, when is the ” happy birthday to home invading, nflpa ignoring , the goat” coming ?
Your favorite qb of all time turned 44 today.

  15. Ben green Says:

More proof that Arians is nothing but a cheerleader. It’s all Brady folks. You’ve had great rosters here. He makes all the difference. Anybody with an honest opinion whould agree.

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

How can one man affect soooo much change on a team?
Tom Brady turned this from an underachieving bad team, to the best team in the NFL.
    It boggles my mind.

  17. Crickett Baker Says:

When a g.o.a.t QB tells you how great you are (by name) and that “we are not gonna lose another game”, that gives so much confidence to each individual team member. You have to add a few things, though. Like Todd Bowls who comes up with amazing game plans and studies each player to know where to put them to their own best advantage. Also a head coach without so much ego that he has to hold the reins so tightly that he gives no one their “head”. There are so many great things happening in all different directions right now with the Bucs it is simply phenomenal. I believe some of these practices behind the scenes are actually beginning to change the entire league.

  18. Wild Bill Says:

Last time I checked Brady does not play defense!!! Brady did not get to the superbowl without a top notch defense, and very good field goal kicking. Tom is great, but so are the others. Football is a team game.

  19. Clw JB Says:

the greatest leaders surround themselves with world class talent and manage from a global level

BA is the CEO of this deal, let there be no misunderstanding

we are witnessing greatness that is legendary, let’s hope we keep this winning group together as long as humanly possible

  20. Jason Says:

Remember the year the BUCS defense actually closed out the year strong and some people were concerned Smitty would leave for a HC position? Bwaaahahaha!!!! Good times.

  21. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

It will be interesting to see what BA does when his staff gets gutted this year.

If both Bowles and Lefty leave for greener pastures, what then?

Dreadful thought. Lets just enjoy another Bucs Super Bowl year!

  22. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

@Cobraboy – you are correct in saying that unless the Bucs run the table, they will never be considered the best team ever.
But, it could happen, though it never has in many many years.
@Mike 2001 I agree that Koetter was not the best head coach, but I liked him too.
