Next Head Coach?

August 4th, 2021

New deal.

Adam Schefter of BSPN twittered out this afternoon that Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles got a new contract with the team.

Well, certainly Bowles earned his keep, no question about that. What his defense did to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, in Joe’s eyes, was a masterpiece of coaching.

Though Schefter didn’t mention this, Joe cannot help but think Team Glazer has a succession plan in mind to try to keep one of the Bucs’ coordinators around as Bucco Bruce Arians’ successor.

If the Joe typing here had his way, that coordinator would be Bowles and Leftwich could stick around as an offensive coordinator if he wished.

Bowles showed us what a huge difference a coordinator can make. It was beautiful

  2. Tampabuscsbro Says:

See about that whole next headcoach thing. I am not sure. He didn’t do well with the jets but look at that situation and the bozos that were and still are running that team can you blame him?

He is a great coordinator. He actually got the Jets to go 10-6 with Ryan Fitzpatrick and almost make the playoffs.

  3. Garv Says:

GREAT NEWS!! Maybe Joe can talk about that on Ira’s next podcast instead of the back up QB and hating on Gabbert! 😉

  4. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

He is a great coach, and his game plan totally destroyed the Chiefs.
However, we all ASSUME Arians will retire, and that may be an incorrect assumption.
    Why should Arians retire ?
He has a loaded team, a great coaching staff, and the very best QB of all time.
Unless Brady decides to leave us next year, I think Arians will ride with us until he does.
I don’t worry as much as some do about Bowles being stolen from us either.
I see another 3 years of our team being together, unless we go undefeated this year, and Brady MIGHT choose to retire then ?

  5. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If BA was ever to retire, I would feel comfortable with Todd Bowles taking the reigns as head coach.

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

I would be OK with Bowles as the next HC. Sometimes it just has to be the right fit. It was not in New York.

  7. crazyBucs_CL Says:

Bowels is an OK DC, don’t forget the heart attacks this D has given us, including parts of last year. Some of the guys here were even blaming D for JW’s performants, not long ago.
He had the chance to be a HC… we don’t want to go with leftovers, like Smith&Koetter. I hope not.

  8. zzbuc Says:

I wouldn’t mind at all if Bowles is next HC in case BA retires or moves to management….Even more I prefer Bowles than VL, I do have not to many arguments, just feeling……..

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We’ll probably keep Bowles & BL……but will likely lose some of the assistants to coordinator positions at other teams.

I just can’t fathom how good our defense will get under 2 or 3 more years of Bowles’ leadership.

  10. BRYAN KOHN Says:

I cool with Bowles becoming our next HC. Or even Brady becoming our new HC Either way, should be one helluva ride!!!

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Love it when you take a strong stance Joe, and especially when you’re right. Bucs heritage is DEFENSE, and Todd Bowles is returning us to our rightful place.

“…instead of the back up QB and hating on Gabbert!”

Gabbert deserves negative views by people. If Brady goes down, you’ll see why. He’ll go down the moment the pressure starts building.

I would rather have our own Ryan Griffin as a backup…mainly because he’s stuck around for a reason we clearly do not know, and he stays healthy. Who knows? He may finally get a shot and surprise everyone.

Gabbert has shown all he has in him.

  13. Nick2 Says:

I agree Bowles deserves a second chance at a coaching gig. He definitely didnt get a fair shake with the NY Jets talent wise and he has our defense playing at a very high level. That being said it will be hard to watch Leftwich go and wonder who would keep continuity with our offense. Maybe Clyde Christensen?

“What his defense did to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, in Joe’s eyes, was a masterpiece of coaching.”

I still have this little nagging voice in the back of my head. (No – it’s not my lovely wife or her sister). Would our defense have dominated if the Chiefs had their two starting offensive tackles playing?

Joe – “I gots ta know”

  15. Bobby M. Says:

I think Bowles learned his lesson with the Jets and will stick with coordinator roles unless an ideal opportunity presents itself. If Arians steps down and Bowles can keep that staff in place, maybe he goes becomes HC knowing he only has to manage the defense. Brady/Leftwich would handle the offense with ease.

  16. Robert Says:

He earned it more than BL, thats for sure

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

“Brady will retire end of this year after he breaks Brees total career TDs and yardage passing records

title or not, its his last year

Glazers want TB involved after retirement

*Kobe is thinking TB comes back as GM after 2 years when the Bucs are back in the basement of the NFC south”

  18. SlyPirate Says:

We speculate on players and coaches leaving because that is how the NFL traditionally operates.

Licht has demonstrated an amazing ability to retain people. I’m not going to worry about anyone leaving with Licht as the GM.

  19. Joe Says:

I still have this little nagging voice in the back of my head. (No – it’s not my lovely wife or her sister). Would our defense have dominated if the Chiefs had their two starting offensive tackles playing?

Joe – “I gots ta know”

We tend to forget with those same injuries, the Chiefs two weeks prior put up 38 points on Buffalo which had a better pass defense than the Bucs.

For the Bucs to hold the Chiefs to just three field goals and Chiefs fans whining about injuries seems like a major copout to Joe.

You cannot tell Joe that a right tackle is worth 29 points.

  20. Kobe Faker Says:

“LOL the Brady gobblers have short memories

Todd Bowles shutdown MVP Rodgers at Greenbay

Brady did the white Jaboo impersonation of throwing 3 Ints to make it close”

  21. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

    Joe – well said…Mahalo sir!

  22. Jason Says:

Crazy question, but does the “Head Coach” during the week who is overseeing the overall game-plan, and player improvement, and whatnot need to be the same “Head Coach” who is in charge of clock management and other in-game decisions.

One skill is long-term planning and logistics, the other is fast paced short-term decision making. I’m thinking Todd Bowles runs practice, and Harold Goodwin runs games, or some other such combo.

  23. geno711 Says:

Congrats to Todd Bowles and the Buc’s both for doing that extension.

It feels like this Bucs organization is building better than ever before. The commitment to real diversity within the organization is special. Coaches and players want to come here and we treat them correctly both in person and financially. Respect goes both ways. Play hard and have fun too.

Got to think guys like Suh, JPP, David, D Smith and Coaches Bowles, and Leftwich are appreciating the atmosphere here.

Quality people want to work with other quality people.
Creating a culture that is exciting.

Bucs, Lightning, Rays. So nice to be in Champa Bay.

  24. kyle Says:

    congrats coach, well deserved.

  25. Duane Says:

Just like Lenny and Rojo, this is a show me year from the potential successors. Bowles will likely have the inside track if he can get the defense rolling. Leftwich can be a high paid OC while he works on his craft, which will likely include grooming the future QB. BA is irreplaceable as a face that could take heat off of his team.

  26. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, if we wait another year, Chucky will be on the market!
They were pretty much done with him in Oakland, and when he don’t win in Vegas this year, we will be able to have him, cheap!
    Just Kidding, of course!!!
My football buddies in New York were glad to be rid of Todd Bowles, who they nicknamed “Toilet Bowles”.
They are singing a different tune now!

  27. GhostofSchiano Says:

    @ Jaymiss Pick6 Again

I wonder about that too. Just as in a previous story here (saints-Winston- Brees injury) Injuries are a part of football and last year they benefitted the Bucs unlike years past that cost us.

  28. allbuccedup Says:

Todd Bowles would be an excellent head coach as long as he had a good offensive coordinator but unfortunately BL doesn’t qualify as good.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

I think it’s obviously Clyde moving into the OC spot if Byron leaves. I’m down. And gives this amazing, close knit coaching squad a better chance of sticking together.

  30. SOEbuc Says:

Bowles been here two years and him and Licht have knocked it out the park with Devin and Weinfield Jr and now Tryon is looking hot. I here Khalil Davis is tearing it up in camp. Davis gets me very hot in the panties for preseason.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

Bowles’ defenses generally fall apart around this time, and last year in the regular season they were average. They did get hot at the right time and had a great playoff run, but I’m guessing they’re the regular season defense we saw last year, not the best in the NFL defense at the end of the season — but I’ll be more than happy to be proven wrong.

However, this team is going to win on offense. If you think this is an elite defense then you don’t care if Gabbert or Brady is the QB. Do you actually believe that? LOL!

Put Gabbert at QB with the 2002 team, they’re still at least getting to the playoffs. Put Gabbert as the starter of the 2021 team and they’re going 3-14.

  32. Perimeter Blocker Says:

I like continuity. Keeping the same verbiage allows athletes to focus on being an athlete instead of having to think what term commands them to execute blitzes, stunts, coverage, etc. The margin of victory is small in most cases in the NFL. Eliminating as many variables as possible helps reaction time which can be the difference…

  33. Mike Says:

The Bucs should give Tom the head coach job!

  34. ModHairKen Says:

I don’t understand why people think Tom Brady will hold a job after retiring as a player. He’s not going to be a GM or a Head Coach. He doesn’t need the money. He doesn’t need the accolades.

  35. Owlykat2 Says:

Because for His love of the game! That isn’t going to fade after He is 45.

  36. Bbro Says:

Wayta Go Coach Bowles you deserve it good job.
