Bruce Arians: Louis Murphy Is NFL-Ready

August 2nd, 2021

Familiar face working with Scotty Miller

There’s a fresh but familiar face on the Bucs’ coaching staff this summer. He’s loaded with great one-liners and has greatly impressed one of the greats of the game.

St. Petersburg native and former Bucs receiver Louis Murphy is a coaching intern on Bucco Bruce Arians’ staff, and he certainly stands out.

This morning, for example, Murphy was barking mini lectures to Bucs receivers about being fearless when it comes to contested catches over the middle. “Don’t be afraid of the white light.” Murphy was using a big pad to slap receivers and he urged them to keep their focus and not worry about getting belted in the head.

Another example, yesterday Joe noticed Murphy sprinting over to coach up a defensive back in the handful of seconds between drills.

Joe asked Arians for his impressions of Coach Murphy, and the head coach gave him the ultimate compliment.

“He’s doing a great job,” Arians said with enthusiasm. “Yeah, he’s staying extra and he knows his stuff. He’s ready to be a coach at this level.”

The 34-year-old former Florida Gators standout spent nine years in the NFL and is head coach at Gibbs High School in St. Pete.

Does he want to coach in the NFL? Murphy hasn’t been made available to media so he can be asked the question. But Joe thinks is super cool that Murphy has a Super Bowl-winning coach saying he’s ready right now.

If you ever create a moniker for him please include locked overnight in a museum. Classic.

Coaching is definitely not for everyone….It’s a fast pace year round grind….glad he seems to be finding his stride.

Beat me to it. He also caught the ball that beat The Steelers.

Also cool to see some familiar faces return to the Bucs in various roles with the organization…..I would tread lightly though….I don’t think we will be seeing the likes of Chris Baker or Josh Freeman making a return to the franchise.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Murphy had great chemistry with Jameis….but Jameis had better chemistry with the defenders….

You get too familiar with the white light, you could get familiar with CTE.

I can’t help but see him in a gators uniform every time he’s brought up. I’m a Gators fan but not a die hard. Where I grew up in Branson Fla. All the straight edge preppy boys were Seminole fans. So me thinking I’m a tough guy was like yeah I’m a Gators fan this was in 1991. My buddy had a apt. Super close to the stadium in Gainesville we would drink gin (yuck) and hit golf balls into the stadium. Didn’t think about what a nuisance we were back then.
