Alex Cappa “Solidified” Starting Right Guard Job

August 29th, 2021

Retains gig.

If there was one guy of the 22+1 starters Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager brought back, there was one position that was sort of up in the air.

No more.

Returning from a busted-up ankle, right guard Alex Cappa sort of struggled in the early going of training camp and preseason. It led Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians to declare the right guard job wasn’t locked up.

In the playoffs when Cappa went down, Aaron Stinnie replaced him and the Bucs offense didn’t miss a beat. So it seemed Stinnie and Cappa were in a dogfight this month.

The dog left standing is Cappa.

Last night after the game, Arians lauded his first-team offensive line. After watching the tape, Cappa played so well Arians today said he retaining his starting gig.

“‘Cap’ probably graded out the highest of the offensive line,” Arians said. “He had a real good ballgame. That [position] is pretty solidified.”

Arians added this was not to diminish Stinnie’s effort or skills, just that Cappa rose to the occasion and earned his job.

If for any reason Ryan Jensen may get hurt, Arians noted, the Bucs would probably move former center and current left guard Ali Marpet back to center and have Stinnie play left guard.

This is interesting to Joe in that Joe noticed in training camp Stinnie taking snaps at center.

    Wirfs must be devastated.

Not sure why so many were high on stinnie. Yea he did he job when called upon but go back and watch the games cuz you can clearly see him whiff a ton of blocks. Stinnie is a good back up but Cappa was always better.

This was the right choice. Cappa played at a pro bowl level last year before his injury. Stinnie could probably start on most teams, but definitely nice to know there is not much of a drop off if a guard is injured.

I wouldn’t read any tea leaves of Stinnie taking reps at center. Getting some cross training as any backup OL should!

  5. Stanglassman Says:

Hansley snaps last night dictated that decision. I felt bad for Gabbert. One was rolled to him the next 3 feet over his head.

Duck Dynasty will just have to wait.

BA seems to talk up young guys like Stinnie to give them confidence–is there any other explanation for his glowing reviews of K Vaughn?

  8. SOEbuc Says:

It’s been confirmed Ali is the backup center. I’d like to see Hainsey getting practice reps at his original spot at OT. That’s where we’re thin on oline.

It just struck me the difference between the picture for this article and the next.
Cappa’s seems to say,” You wanna throw down? Lets go! A couple extra scars can’t hurt and might help. Chicks dig scars, right?”
Whereas Whiteheads picture seems to say ” I’m just f’ing crazy enough to do it!
Go ahead, make my f’ing day!(NOT in a Clint Eastwood voice)”

Please, Stinnie was playing LG all preseason. This “competition” was just to get Cap going.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Arians is smart. He knows competition is important. Guys won’t compete if they don’t think there is treasure waiting.

    No cap

I just wish we could consistently find another picture where he doesn’t look like some Chicago bar bouncer.

This is not good. Cappa has been looking lost. I’m scared that Cappa going to get Brady killed.
