Ali Marpet Talks Injuring Tom Brady & Getting Saved By Tom Brady

July 5th, 2021

Ali Marpet

With the Buccaneers’ 2020 season on the line, Ali Marpet was badly beaten while pass blocking and remembers it vividly months after the moment.

Why does the play stick out? It’s because it was all over ESPN and social media, Marpet revealed during a chat with Hobart Athletics.

You can watch the play here: There’s 4:06 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Bucs are leading Washington 28-23 on the Tampa Bay 25 yard line. It’s 2nd-and-8 and Washington defensive tackle Jonathan Allen abuses Marpet in a  1-on-1 situation and comes steaming in on Tom Brady who was working out of the shotgun after a low snap.

Brady was the only quarterback in the NFL who would have gotten the throw off, per Marpet, and it was a perfect 35-yard completion to Mike Evans. Brady took a shot on that play, which in many ways was nearly a final dagger to Washington’s chances to upset the Bucs in the wild card round of the playoffs.

Marpet may have been exaggerating a bit, but the broader context was how Brady bails out offensive linemen with his quick release.

Marpet also relayed a story about how he was badly bull-rushed in training camp last year and stepped on Brady’s foot so hard he knew it would leave a significant bruise.

It created a tense moment, he continued, and it was a reminder how critical it is to protect Brady.

“I stepped on Tom’s cleat, like hard, like my cleat on his cleat type of thing where it’s like you know he’s going to bruised tomorrow … hopefully nothing terrible,” Marpet said. “And I immediately looked back at him, and I could just see it in eyes. And then after like three seconds he calmed down, he was fine. But for three seconds it was pretty intense. You don’t want to do that. You don’t want to step on his feet. You don’t want to get in his way. Let’s just let the man operate, you know.”

Joe loves hearing all the mad respect Bucs offensive linemen have for Brady.

Not only is the O-line supremely talented, experienced and they’re all 30 or younger, Joe is confident not one of those guys will dare to lower their supreme effort and expectations when it comes to their pass-blocking role.

Damn, it’s going to be fun seeing Brady carve up the league right out of the gate this season.

    Couldn’t say it any better!

  2. Bobby M. Says:

I think its obvious Brady is still shooting for SBs….but I believe he’s so competitive he’ll want to own as many passing records as possible. Including Bucs records. Hopefully the line can keep him clean and Brady & Co. stay healthy.

  3. Youngbucs Says:

If Brady plays 1 more year after his contract is up he will own all the Bucs passing records.

  4. Jason Says:

What ever you do, don’t step on TB12’s blue suede shoes.

  5. Bird Says:

Another buc site is counting down best bucs ever. Wont say name joes but i am sure you know which one. And they have nothing on this here site

But They have davin joseph ranked better then marpet. 😂

Had karl the truth williams better too. 😂

    What a crock

Marpet is the best guard buc player ever iMO
I mean the dude has given up 2 sacks in the last 3 season. Thats filthy. And he went from right guard to center to left guard Thats nuts
He has been screwed for probowls and all pros , honestly cause he played on some bad buc teams and came from division III hobart.

The dude is a stud. He needs to be in best oline discussion for bucs ever. Not just guard.

    Who else is better guard?

    Thank you, Bird!

  7. Medicated Pete Says:

    “Ali” is short for Alexander

  8. B Says:

You know what might be a cool series for the summer, Joe? “IRA verses the fans” Ira drafts HIS all time Bucs team and we, the masses, do the same using a JoeBucs fan poll or series of polls by position. The two Joes then judge the winner as if the teams were going head to head. Maybe do it on the podcast? Just an idea.

  9. Howard Cosell Says:

Marpet is lucky he didn’t get hit with a heat ray or a death ray from Bradys eyes. Because Brady can do that you know.

  10. Howard Cosell Says:

Like Cyclops the Xman only more powerful

  11. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

Hoping he sticks it out long enough to erase Jameis.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Of all the position groups, the Oline is at the top of my list for reliability & performance.

Then, in order WR, TE, RB, Front 7, S then CB…..

We are solid. The only position that I believe we could use an upgrade is at CB….but we are adequate….an upgrade would cost us too much.

  13. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Brady would have to play 4 years to have all the Bucs passing records. The only one he won’t own is turnovers. That dishonor belongs to Winston forever. Ain’t that right ohneill???

  14. 1sparkybuc Says:

Jameis does not own the season record for interceptions. That’s Vinnie T with 35.

  15. Colonel Angus Says:

Dammit Bolts, put the brooms away. Now win it at home. Will be better that way.

  16. Anonymous Says:

Wow. Bolts had it hand delivered and choked it away. Hopefully they man up in Game 5. 4 minute powerplay was brutally bad.
