What Can We Expect From Minicamp?

June 6th, 2021

Minicamp could be valuable.

One more week of underwear football season remains for the Bucs, the three scheduled days for mandatory minicamp that begin Tuesday.

No one from the Bucs mentioned this to Joe at all. But it wouldn’t be a shock if Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians sent his team on vacation one day sooner than scheduled.

Joe isn’t expecting anything from Joe Tryon. The first-round pick seemed to be getting close enough in rehab that Bucs types were hopeful he could participate in minicamp this week. We shall see.

Besides, it is just about worthless watching linemen and pass rushers in underwear football. For those unaware, underwear football is glorified flag football. Players wear shorts and their practice jersey. That’s it. There are no pads other than a helmet. Hitting in all forms is not allowed.

So it is impossible if not irresponsible to try to evaluate anything a lineman or a pass rusher does in underwear football.

Joe is interested watching how rookie quarterback Kyle Trask throws, provided he ever goes up against the first-team defense. Joe isn’t sure he will get any opportunities.

Same holds true for Jaelon Darden. The speedy rookie receiver is sure hyped by Arians. And given that Arians is frustrated that Tyler Johnson (among others) wasn’t at OTAs, and Arians said last week he wishes there were 10 players at OTAs who were absent because they are fighting for jobs they don’t know they are fighting for, it seems Darden will have every opportunity to demonstrate his ability to climb the depth chart.

How will Darden do if he faces Carlton Davis or Sean Murphy-Bunting or Jamel Dean or Antoine Winfield?

The GraveDiggers may have a say in how Darden is used this fall — as much as Darden does.

“First they should be at OTAs

Then he will cut 1 day off from mini camp and send them on vaca

But he says Players fighting for their jobs and should be in camp

    Ariana is bipolar Grandpa Smurf”

I don’t think it’s irresponsible to evaluate some players at certain positions during OTAs……..WRs & DBs for example……their skills are on display…..
I agree that it’s much more difficult to evaluate the lines.

As for Trask getting repetitions against the 1st string defense……I could understand why he won’t…..he’s got two other backups in front of him that will likely see game action before he does…..and that’s fine.

  3. Hawk Says:

Gabbert and Griffin have been in Arians offense since he’s been here, and the starting receivers are all returning (I heard that somewhere), so it is not out of the question for Trask to be offered a few snaps against the starting defense. If there is a chance that Arians doesn’t think a third day in camp is important to the starters, then that day could be devoted to getting reps with the rookies against the starters.

The next time Monster Jam comes to RayJay they really need to do a cross promotion with Gravedigger and the Gravediggers. Just saying.

Headed down to One Buc to see if i can get a Toradol shot

Great takes all around, Joe, particularly RE: Darden. He’s the perfect type of player to test any secondary in the league, especially during the limited hitting of an NFL practice. I’m very happy he’ll be doing just that against The Gravediggers as a member of the Bucs. I can vividly recall being very dimayed at the performance of the yet-to-be-named defensive secondary the Bucs fielded to start last season. SMB23, in particular, was horrifying to watch: Too agressive. Too lost. For much of the season, DW45 was a complete liability against the pass, as well. We all witnessed how they evolved into Super Bowl champions, but as Ira Kaufman (much props, sir!) so eloquently points out in his “Maybe Todd Bowles Wasn’t Kidding” column from yesterday, The Gravediggers have plenty of room for improvemnet, and Darden will only make them better! Cheers!🍻

If Darden faces Jamel Dean I don’t think he will have much trouble.

I didn’t realize Tyler Johnson wasn’t in OTAs. Joe, any words on who is he working out with?

I look at Darden a little different Joe, with his speed, he is going to be good for helping this secondary take the next step.
Sure Darden has to learn the ropes, but his speed is a great difference maker in practice and in games.

The secondary is going to be forced into situations that they really have not had to respond to at 1 Buc Palace in a while. All the better. Bring it on. GO BUCS!!!!!

Alabama… Johnson was with working out with Brady, But he could have been at OTA’s also. At least BA sure thought so, lol
    GO BUCS!!!!

It will give them a feel for the team and game.

  12. TOM Says:

Darden is sure to make the team. TJ, Scotty & Watson will be fighting it out. TJ & Scotty are propbaly ahead of Watson but Watson is a damn good ST player. Let the games begin. Hainsley, Trask and Tryon are sure bets to also make the team. Let the games begin.

Trask Gator love is transparent Joe. Gabbert is going no where. From what I’ve seen and read, Griffin is the much better position to get number three QB. That’s a swing and whif in the second round Jason.

  14. #1bucsfan Says:

It’s OTAs, Trask has had a few weeks to learn the playbook. Let him take a couple snaps against the 1st string and see how he fares. Again it’s only OTAs why not see what the guy can handle and work from there. At least that’s what I would do

  15. Joe Says:

Never wrote it was. Wrote it *is* for linemen.

  16. Joe Says:

Never wrote Gabbert is going anywhere. Trask is obviously the future (for now). Would be nice to see what he does against first team defense to see his level of progress. Nothing more; nothing less.

    They did. Just saying.

Does anybody even know if they are letting us in like normal? Or at all? Or are they gonna act all wierd like we all got some reason to be scared of one another?
