Devin White Got Help From Patrick Willis, Bobby Wagner

May 6th, 2021

Other Bucs may be poolside now wisely drinking Big Storm beers, but Devin White is grinding away like it’s midseason with the added to-do list of working his stable of horses.

The Buccaneers savior linebacker is fired up to come out smoking this season, so he explained to Buccaneers.com in a show sponsored by embarrassingly inferior beer.

Host Casey Phillips asked White how he’s changed since he was drafted two years ago.

“The No. 1 thing is being an even better student of the game. You know, reaching out to different players,” White said. “Something I didn’t do at the younger age. I was just listening to my coaches and stuff.

“But the older I got, I got accustomed to different players. Like I was able to reach out to Patrick Willis and he’d respond, you know, just different players like that. And then also a great NFL linebacker, like the Bobby Wagners of the league responded back to me giving me tips on how they do things.”

White added that he now takes care of his body in the offseason the way he does in-season, in addition to the daily farm labor in Louisiana.

What a happy 23rd birthday it was for White about six weeks ago. Joe can’t wait to see if White can keep up his dominant postseason play when the whistle blows on the 2021 season.

He’s a prototype LB. That pick turned out to be golden

  2. Casual Observer Says:

Don’t see why he wouldn’t continue to mature in football savvy. And he can pass on some tips to the new ILBs just added.

  3. Bruce Blahak Says:

    canton maybe…the coverage keeps improving

  4. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I love how a 23 yo says in my younger age. Lol.

  5. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

no reaching out to DB55? interesting.

  6. BillyBucFan Says:

He is a generational talent and if reaching out to Willis and Wagner is any indication, he knows it.

I wanted him just for this possibility and now Jerry Jones and others are looking for that next game changer at LB.

    What a stud man.
I’m so glad we have him.

Gonna cost a pretty penny in a couple years.

  7. Mitch Says:

I hope stays healthy and has a DPOY like season.

  8. PSL Bob Says:

I think the disciplined, winning culture that Brady brought to One Buc Place has diffused to everyone, not that White needed it. But the notion of keeping your in-season conditioning going in the off-season is something Brady practices and probably preaches. Certainly makes it easier when training camp arrives. If Devin’s coverage skills continue to improve, the dude will definitely be HOF bound.

  9. DingleBerry Says:

Such a supremely special talent and person. Forever proving that you absolutely can and should draft an off-ball linebacker in the top 5 if it’s warranted.

Evolvingbucsfan… If I remember correctly White has consulted Brooks as well.

  10. Beeej Says:

This guy is going to make people forget Jack Lambert

  11. bucfanforever Says:

Both Lavonte David and Bobby Wagner were drafted in the 2nd round of the 2012 NFL draft. David pick #58; Wagner #47

    Career Stats:
    Tackles: Wagner: 1143, David: 1125
    Sacks: Wagner 22.5, David 24
Pass Deflections: Wagner: 55, David: 51
    Interceptions: Wagner: 10, David: 12
Forced Fumbles: Wagner: 5, David: 24
Fumble Recoveries: Wagner: 10, David: 16
Defensive TDs: Wagner: 4, David: 3
Super Bowl Wins: Wagner: 1, David: 1

Pro Bowls: Wagner: 7, David: 1
    All-Pros: Wagner: 7, David: 3

Hopefully Wagner is giving White tips on how to get respect, because David is the better player.

  12. SB Says:

    Nice breakdown there @ bucfanforever
I just screenshot that. I have many Seattle friends that swear Wagner is the best LB ever. You just gave me some ammo!

  13. Steven007 Says:

Buc fan forever, his stats also match favorably with Luke kuechly’s. It’s incredible how little respect he has gotten historically from his peers and even fans. The great Seattle defense of a few years ago is what got Wagner his accolades. Not that he didn’t deserve them, but as you presented he is no better in some ways much worse than David. I mean forced fumbles is a pretty important category for a linebacker and he smokes Wagner.

  14. Winny Testaverde Says:

“I’m gonna put the dagger in them…watch.” His playoff game vs The Saints was out of this world. Knocked their dangerous return man/wr out of the game…the turnovers…the stiff arms…it was incredible.

  15. jamestb03 Says:

Great breakdown @ bucfanforever! David is criminally underrated. He did not have the same talent Wagner had in front of him for many of those years as well.

  16. Bucfanforever Says:

And the coaching was on defense was terrible until 2019.

  17. Rayjay1122 Says:

Devin has arms the size of Cynthia Frelund’s waist.

  18. Hodad Says:

Same people calling Trask a wasted pick, probably the one’s saying we shouldn’t have drafted a LB that high. Maybe they just had D. James a safety rated higher, like they have Mond, and Hill ranked higher then Trask. Ehh, what do they know?

  19. Swampbuc Says:

I wanted edge at number 5 instead of DW. Fortunately someone who knows what he’s doing drafted DW.

So its the same now for Trask. I am stfu about Kyle.

  20. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Evolvingbucfan I am sure Brooks has worked with White and I am sure White didn’t have to reach out to him… he was right there.

  21. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Dagg gone it Joe!! Quit knocking my go to pour!!! It is Superior – NOT inferior!

  22. c-spann Says:

@Swampbuc I wanted an edge rusher at 5 too. Josh Allen to be exact. It ended up working out with 45, I must say.

  23. Doctor_Berto Says:

Not gonna lie, I definitely wanted josh Allen over White and Derwin over Vea. Good thing I’m not the GM.

  24. Cainishere Says:

When my nephew stood at the NFL draft podium in 2019 and picked Devin White I knew we had a winner.

  25. SB Says:

I can put myself in that boat as well. I was watching the draft with a friend of mine who isn’t up on as much college football as I am. I told him that if Josh Allen was there when it was our turn there was no way we were passing them up. I’m glad I was wrong

  26. ClwJB Says:

Hat tip @bucfanforever – great stats and spot in

  27. lokog Says:

damn 24 forced fumbles by lvd

  28. DrunkinYbor Says:

“This is hwy you draft a linebacker no.5 overall for games like this!!” Devin white said after a postseason win. You gotta love this guy great draft pick.

  29. FortMyersDave Says:

Simply put: the dude is a beast with a monster mentality and a motor to boot as well with ample leadership skills. The Bucs hit a home run picking him at 5th overall! I have to admit I was wanting Josh Allen out of Kentucky nation as well but Licht earned his paycheck with this pick! Allen had a good year in 2019 for the Jags but did not help them win (but who could? I have my doubts Urban Meyer and the Clemson kid are going to turn that program around) and then Allen spent a good part of last year on the shelf via injury. BTW, Casey Phillips is a babe, very nice on the eyes!

  30. #1bucsfan Says:

A lot of people were mad about us picking him. Glad they all have come around. He’s 23 and he’s improving his game. Love it.

  31. MadMax Says:

True warrior right there….knows his priorities and going above and beyond to exceed expectations.

  32. MadMax Says:

Love you guys admitting….the old timers here know I was all over us drafting White and Big V and Wirfs….was promoting them early. Had a few misses with a few other players too though. Nobody is perfect. But its all about whats paid for it, lol, all free…and look at us now baby 🙂

  33. Costa Rica John Says:

DW don’t forget to reach out to Hardy Nickerson. One of my favorite Bucs. He came here and helped changed the culture to winning back on the day.
