Derrick Brooks “Surprised” By Bucs Draft

May 6th, 2021

Bucs legend Derrick Brooks weighs in

Buccaneers legend Derrick Brooks has close relationships with Bucs players and is very well plugged in to team. Yet even he was thrown a curveball by the 2021 NFL Draft.

That’s just great evidence of what a mystery the draft really can be unless your name is Glazer or you hang out in Jason Licht’s inner scouting circle of trust.

Brooks spoke on TAMPA TWO with Ira Kaufman about how he gives the Bucs an ”A” grade for this years draft, which he believes focused on depth, speed and quickness.

And that strong A grade (a minority opinion) even came after a Friday night shock.

”The surprise pick for me was obviously Kyle Trask,” Brooks said. ”I really thought the Bucs would not address the quarterback position through the draft.”

Brooks added some sage wisdom when he noted that Bucs veterans — and fans — might be in for a surprise. ”Signing everybody back doesn’t mean everybody’s going to make this team,” he said.

TAMPA TWO is talkin’ draft with Buccaneers legend Derrick Brooks and The Sage of Tampa Bay Sports, JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman. All the insight is presented by Converged Technology Professionals. More fun from The Identity Tampa Bay and Joe.

Spoken like a true Seminole 😂😂

  2. Winny Testaverde Says:

Mr. Brooks…always a pleasure. Many of us were surprised by the Trask pick as well…especially with a great looking safety going the very next pick. Anything less than bathing Trask in anointing oil may get you chastised, however.

cough cough ryan griffin or blaine…lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He must be OK with the Trask pick or he wouldn’t give an A.

Who did we sign that doesn’t have a guaranteed salary?….not many.

  5. Mike Says:

    It’s all about competition.

  6. Bucanero Says:

There you go gentleman. Said by the legend himself. Bummer.

  7. ocala Says:

Derrick is not one of those guys that is all in on a Florida State guy or all out on Florida and Miami guys.

  8. Mitch Says:

The draft pick to root for this year is Grant Stuard. I hope he balls out.

What is the difference between this edition and the one a day or two ago? Seems like the same…..

  10. mark2001 Says:

Both exactly 6:35 and such. Am I the only one to listen to all these? They are great.

i remember how Derrick B did everything possible to advertised, referred, rooted for JW. We got 5 years of pain, three HC, and an empty stadium. FSU is bigger than Bucs, on DB book. Great player, terrible scout, average specialist, terrible on predictions. No influence to me, what he thinks about K Trask.

  12. Scott Says:

agree with wiinny testaverde nothing against trask you just cant pass up cisco

i am excited about jaeleon darden could be hidden gem at wr should help return game this year

excited bout joe tryon–as he has all the physical and mental intangibles and has a good set of coaches and role models. unfortunately anthony nelson had all that last year and it amounted to a hill of beans. look forward to practices.
Very excited about jaelon darden, we need to make room for him when we have blowout games–put him in at slot. rest the starters. hope the new cornerbacks can improve with better coaching, rest of secondary sure did–last year playoffs impressive.

When brooks was drafted, same for sapp, brady, and most greats, you dont know what will catapult them. Brady had a skill for minimal mistakes, and later got bigger numbers. Sapp and brooks really fit into what dungy did , there is always something with the great ones thats hard to predict. As is , maybe trask, maybe all these guys may not have what it takes. But its about 2-3 guys..not 7 to be a great draft. ,im hopeful we can get 3 good ones from this group.
All gets settled on the field, newspapers barely know any more than you. Except joe is about as good as you will see, and hes just having fun right now

  16. Medicated Pete Says:

If Brooks is shoxked that we wasted the 2nd Rd pick, then you know actual players on the team are pissed about Licht completely throwing away the pick. smh

  17. MadMax Says:

Yeah i was surprised too, but heck I wanted to trade up for a QB if we were going to take one. But he lasted and a need was addressed, Kids in a lot of great company to learn the ropes. Jaelon was my fave. I think he’s gonna fit that need for KR/PR.

So we drafted OLB/DE, QB, OL, KR/WR in the first 4 which were needs I was hoping for, just in a different order. And when you’re picking last at the rounds, you have to take whats available. Guys I wanted went 1st and 2nd, except Stills, cant believe he went undrafted (must be something scouts everywhere did their homework on and didnt like).

  18. Eddie Marz Says:

Go Bucs, but to honest, the best way to evaluate a draft is after they start playing. Everybody looks good on paper, let’s see if these new guys can bring it. I hope they will. GO BUCS!
