Carlton Davis Explains Success Against Michael Thomas; Shares Burning Desire

May 24th, 2021

Vernon Hargreaves has one. So does Sean Murphy-Bunting. Who could forget the one in Jamel Dean’s name?

Joe’s talking about cornerback touchdowns after interceptions.

”I need a pick-6,” Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis pleaded on the Behind The Mask podcast.

Yes, Davis has made 44 NFL starts, including playoffs, and he has no touchdown to his name, something he plans to change in 2021.

Davis is steaming with confidence, talking on the podcast about how he needs “another round” with Tyreek Hill, and Davis was adamant that Saints receiver Michael Thomas is just another matchup.

”I love the physicality of the game,” Davis said. ”So I’m going to go up to the line and I’m going to press you. And if you’re not quick enough or, you know, if you just can’t get off the press, then it’s going to be a long game for you. You know what I’m saying? That’s my strength. That’s what I’m going to continue to do.

”It’s not about what I’ve figured out [about covering Michael Thomas], it’s about what he can do to, you know, stop me. Because I’m just doing what I do to anybody.”

Fans should realize that Davis is a true lockdown corner, he said, noting he’s one of the rare corners ”traveling” to cover top receivers wherever they roam.

”I’m going left. I’m going right. I’m going in the slot. I’m playing man-to-man. …I’m not hiding in coverages,” Davis said.

Look at the stats of targets and completions and who Davis was covering, he said, and you’ll understand his greatness.

Up next for Davis? ”This year I’m going to be even more consistent,” he said.

Joe why isn’t Mike alstott in the hall of fame yet he’s one of the best power runner of all time And definitely deserve to be in the hall

  2. SB Says:

I think Licht did us a Solid with this pick. Yet again, I might add.
When the pass rush is on our young secondary is $.
Then again a pass rush is paramount to any secondary but I think we have a Great combo on our D!

  3. Architek Says:

He’s about to get PAID too!

  4. Mitch Says:

He still hasn’t proven to be a lock down corner. He is a really good corner, but he gets beat by speed on the outside too often and is out positioned on sideline throws too. Just off of the top of my head Tyreek Hill, Davonte Adams, Keenan Allen, Allen Robinson, and MVS all beat him handedly at different points this past year. Also QB’s completed almost 70% of passes when targeting him last year.

IMO, he would need to improve dramatically to get the pay day that he is angling for from the bucs.

  5. Pablo Says:

Lock down ??? 🔒 NOT QUITE THERE YET … He gets beat way to often for Pablo

  6. DingleBerry Says:

He shut down every single Wide Receiver not named Tyreek Hill last season.

He is an absolute beast and one of the best press man Corners in the league, played like a top 5 corner last season outside of one game.

And he’s only getting better. Go Bucs. 20-0!

  7. Jason Says:

All I know is that when he finally scores a touchdown he better do the Carlton as his touchdown dance. Just saying.

  8. SOEbuc Says:

He was very good but banged up a lot also. This is his contract year to shine.

    a). Totally off topic.
b). Why are you asking Joe?
c). Alstott did not have a HOF career. Statistically, you can’t justify it.

  10. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Gave up 2 TDs in a playoff game. Superstars don’t do that. Long way to go but he is still young.

  11. AtlBuc Says:

Being a lockdown corner doesn’t mean you never get beat. the Any corner who can hold Michael Thomas to one catch and 13 yards in two games is a lockdown corner!

  12. TSmitty3000 Says:

Take notes Brent Grimes. In today’s NFL, you’re going to get beaten at times at CB. You just want to be near the ball unlike the Mike Smith days.

  13. IrishMist Says:

He may sound a little cocky, but you can’t be a good CB in this league unless you are.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Wayne Haddix had 3 TDs in one season!

It’s nice to have a corner who can get you TDs once in a while, but I’d rather just have a corner who is good, as opposed to lucky.

  15. Buczilla Says:

Davis is a damn good player and I hope that he has a pro bowl type season so that Licht will have some tough choices to make next year in deciding who we keep.

As for Alstott, he is easily one of my favorite players ever, but I just don’t think that he has the numbers to get into the hall of fame. Maybe one day the senior committee will vote him in, but I think that it’s a longshot. It was one hell of a lot of fun just watching him trample dudes though. 😄

  16. kaimaru Says:

@Mitch How was he covering both the #1 and #2 WRs at GB?

  17. kaimaru Says:

I know for a fact Davante Adams is their #1 and he had 61 and 67 yards respectively. MVS is more their Scooter. Allen Robinson had 90 yards and Allen had 62. Don’t be making things up. The fact is NO ONE puts one person on Tyreek, NO ONE. Bowles learned the hard way in the 1st quarter. I don’t even know if prime Deion Sanders could cover him 1 to 1. He’s just a different beast.

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

Davis is a fantastic corner! I wouldnt trade him for anyone!
SMB is a very good CB. Dean is a ball hawk.
All 3 will be better this year.

Our safeties should be better also.
I expect Edwards to make a splash this year.
He seems to have that inate instinct for the ball. Cant teach that.

I dont know how you cant be excited, if you are a Bucs Fan!
And I think- if they keep their focus- Brown and Gronk go off this year.

  19. chris L Says:

    slant boy michael thomas hahah

  20. ClwJB Says:

He’s top third IMO, but a lack of true deep speed means he gets beat if he doesn’t have perfect technique- he can’t recover if his press doesn’t hold

It does 75% of the time, thus he is above average

Dean is the one that could develop to a true 1 by end of the year, he’s got wheels and instincts

  21. Jackie Jenkins Jr Says:

Man stop Michael Thomas was hurt all last season. Hurt in the 1st game they played. Brees couldn’t throw in the playoffs. What happen the year before when he broke records. Next season will be interesting. The Saints have owned Tampa and will win the Division again next year. Plus in the playoffs this time with a Healthy QB.

  22. Jackie Jenkins Jr Says:

MT13 had 19, 230, 3TDs when he was healthy in 2019. Last year was injured and so was the QB. He gone make Davis regret it in 2021

  23. unbelievable Says:

Love the swagger, but I hope the SB win doesn’t make him take his foot off the pedal of constantly pushing to improve.

He’s got the skill set but still needs work to truly be an elite shutdown corners.

Also, I’m pretty sure Michael Thomas was injured the first game, and Drew Brees could barely throw the last one. That said, he did manhandle Thomas in that last one quite nicely!
