A Good Dante Fowler

May 3rd, 2021

Bucs edge rusher Joe Tryon.

Days of Joe’s research after the Bucs selected Washington defensive end Joe Tryon in the first round revealed a trend.

Joe found multiple references of Tryon being the next Dante Fowler. One particular reference came from Joe’s good friend Mike Tanier, typing with Football Outsiders.

Tryon may have the most consistent first-step get-off of any edge rusher in the class. He’s supple and bendy when rushing, rarely taking a predictable path through his blocker to the quarterback. Factor in quick, active hands, and Tyron is a real headache to block. I liked him better than Jayson Oweh when watching tape.

As a run defender, Tryon is a shopping cart, so he won’t be of much use from a three-point stance on rushing downs. But if the Buccaneers can use him as a situational edge rusher and keep him away from pile-driving right tackles, Tryon will be a nasty edge rusher. Think Dante Fowler, without the outsized expectations.

Now before Bucs fans spill hot coffee all over their keyboards, let Joe explain something. Fowler is and has been a headcase dating all the way back to his high school days in St. Petersburg. (Joe has all kinds of intel on him from years and years ago.)

No, Fowler hasn’t lived up to being a third-overall draft pick in 2015. He’s on his third team. And he was awful with the Dixie Chicks last year.

Still, if you look inside Fowler’s two best seasons, including 11.5 sacks with the Rams, Fowler wasn’t expected to be the star. He was on a packed defensive line (which included Ndamukong Suh).

Same goes for his eight-sack season in Jacksonville. That line was loaded.

So when Fowler hasn’t been asked to carry a defensive front, he was damn good. When he is asked to carry the load, he’s a poor man’s Adrian Clayborn.

Last time Joe checked, the Bucs have arguably the best front-seven in the league.

Joe, we won’t know who the best edge rusher is till after the season. Just like last year with who was the best tackle, we had the last laugh. Lets hope that’s half our draft picks this year, and we’ll be looking good. Love the Tryon pick.

  2. DingleBerry Says:

So this guy is a better Dante Fowler because he’ll be expected to be a backup?

    That’s… Some logic there Joe…

I’ll tell you what this guy actually is, a bodybuilding workout warrior with decent athleticism and bad tape/ technique.

Larry Foote and the OLB coaches will have to put a ton of work in to get to his ceiling of a 6-8 sacks a year type of guy. As of right now he’ll be lucky to get 4 sacks, and that’s if he’s unblocked a couple times and falls into them.

  3. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If Tryon did not sit out last season, he might have been a top 10. At #32, this was a worthy pickup as he has pro bowl potential and a high ceiling.

  4. Baby Grace Says:

    DingleBerry,

Everyone on this site knows you don’t like Tryon, but your constant talk about bad tape shows you know absolutely nothing about football. I don’t know if he will be a great player or an average one, but I do know if he he plays like his tape we got a good one!

  5. Bucsfan951 Says:

Damn dingle, you’re one negative person. I don’t comment much and don’t always read the comment section but you’re always in them spitting negative bs. You need a hug or something? Seriously.

  6. catcard202 Says:

I see Tyron’s comp as Anthony Barr. (& if Tyron has a career equal to Barr’s – that would be a hell of a steal at #32!)

  7. geno711 Says:

My daughter was at UF when Dante was there and really had stories about Fowler then. Not that she knew 1st hand but I believed what I heard.

This year, I would not expect Tryon’s stats to be anything significant.

    Fowler 1st year – 4 sacks
Lets look at other draft years. Tough to get edge rushers that work out.
Look at 2017. Besides Myles Garrett who worked out.
Other guys taken in 1st round included:
Soloman Thomas, Derek Barnett, Charles Harris, Takkarist McKinley, and Taco Charlton.

I would just say to Dingleberry to tell me out of the guys picked ahead of Tryon in the 1st round this year — Which one will have 7 or more sacks?
Which guy picked in any other round will have 7 or more sacks this year.
If the bet is 4 sacks for a 1st year edge rusher than history shows you will win. Most guys are not Chase Young or Myles Garrett. That is why those guys get picked in the top 5.

  8. Casual Observer Says:

It’s been made before, but Alabama has a very good point. Sitting out last season worked to the Bucs advantage. He looks like a budding star at the edge.

  9. DingleBerry Says:

    @Baby Grace

You literally say you have no idea whether he will be good or not, professing your own ignorance, and then still have the audacity to tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about

Watch this tape vs a nothing offensive line where Joe Tryon has maybe 3-4 decent plays for the entire game and gets stonewalled by scrubs for the rest of it.

Btw, highlights aren’t the same as tape. You fool.

  10. DingleBerry Says:

    @Baby Grace

You literally say you have no idea whether he will be good or not, professing your own ignorance, and then still have the audacity to tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about

Do me a favor and watch the cut up on Youtube of Joe Tryon vs Washington state, a nothing offensive line where Tryon has maybe 3-4 decent plays for the entire game and gets stonewalled by scrubs for the rest of it.

Btw, highlights aren’t the same as tape. You fool. And Joe Tryons highlights aren’t even that impressive. The things that he won with to get to the QB in college won’t work at the NFL level. He doesn’t have any kind of developed pass rush moves.

I’m actually not all that negative. As I’ve stated numerous times I still have every confidence that the Bucs will be back to back Super Bowl champions. Just as I predicted they would be the first team in NFL history to win a home game Super Bowl.

I just don’t like the fact that we wasted our 2 1st round picks.

But I suppose with as fantastic as Licht’s previous couple drafts were, the law of averages had to catch up with him eventually. I’m sure that next years draft will be much, much better.

  12. Buc50 Says:

    Dingle

not all that negative? You are always bitching and moaning. I’ll bet you aint the butch in your relationship.

  13. DingleBerry Says:

My comments have been largely negative after the draft. Because we wasted our 1st 2 picks. That is all. No need to bring personal attacks into the equation.

  14. Leighroy Says:

Dingle, you have very strong negative takes, based on some youtube cut-ups you watched (adamantly clarified as non-highlights). So based on those you’ve drawn your line in the sand against an NFL scouting department who does this for a living – which I guess is your prerogative.

So now, you either get to be wrong, or you get to be right and your team suffers. You’re in a rock and a hard place my friend. Congratulations.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

dingle will go away once we start winning….lol…

just like realist, ndog, lamarcus and many others….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. geno711 Says:

Did not see DingleBerry on this site at all last year supporting the Buc’s.

    Agree with 813bucboi.
Wish we had the ability to block his comments and others.

  17. ClwJB Says:

Very nice pick IMO – Shaq sat for several years before developing a full arsenal of moves – this kid has him and JPP to learn from for a Couple years – it will end up being a great pick long term

  18. DingleBerry Says:

You didn’t see me because I was posting under a different name before I got in trouble 🙂

Also I find it positively hilarious how 2-3 years ago the consensus was that Licht was an idiot who should be fired (I wasn’t one of them) and now since winning the SB he is a genius GM who couldn’t possibly ever make a mistake.

    Funny how that works.

  19. DingleBerry Says:

    @813

If you’d actually read anything I said you’d see that I still expect us to win the SB again this year. So why would I go away when we start winning?

  20. Mike C Says:

Dingle i think it is funny you KNOW that he will not be good, you are as clueless as everyone else don’t act like you have the crystal ball bro.

  21. Pewter Power Says:

I doubt the Bucs agree with that assessment having the number one rush defense means stopping the run is important so unlikely the Bucs feel he’d be unable to learn from the bunch they have. If strength isn’t the issue with stopping the run he’ll be fine

  22. Hodad Says:

We wasted our first, and second round picks. This coming from a guy who calls himself dinkleberry, pay no attention. Sounds like T Max, or Ndog, posters who are in witness protection now.

  23. DingleBerry Says:

Aww, you insulted my fake name that I only picked to be silly.

That hurts coming from the dad of ho.

“You didn’t see me because I was posting under a different name before I got in trouble 🙂”

well that explains it. what was your previous name so at least we know who we are dealing with?

  25. Baby Grace Says:

    DingleBerry

Reading comprehension is not your strong suit either! You typed “you have no idea whether he will be good or not”. I didn’t post that, I posted this. ” I don’t know if he will be a great player or an average one, but I do know if he he plays like his tape we got a good one!” Nobody knows for sure if a player will be great or not! The NFL is littered with “can’t miss” prospects that were busts. Tryon has everything you can’t teach: speed, get off, high motor, extremely competitive, and loves to play football. Those traits are are good start.

Miss quoting someone is chicken s@@@!

  26. David Says:

I think it is the perfect situation for him. He’s going to get in on pure passing downs to just go after the quarterback. He’s going to be rotational guy. He’s going to be able to learn more moves from Shaq and JPP. Just like Shaq, I expect him to get better and better against the run over the next couple of years.

  27. geno711 Says:

    @bucsfan951:

So know we know that Dingleberry was someone else last year that was obviously a Troll. Now I do not believe him when he says that he predicted the Bucs would win the Super Bowl. I believe he is lying when he says that he picked the Bucs to win the Super Bowl.

  28. DingleBerry Says:

    Bucsfan951

Now why would I go and tell on myself and get banned again?

    How’s this…

    1. Tom Brady is the best QB of all time and even at 43 is better than Jameis will probably ever be.

    2. Bruce Arians is a fantastic Head Coach and an even great leader of men and he has assembled one of the best coaching staffs ever seen.

    3. Mike Smith was an awful Defensive Coordinator, he and Dirk both deserved to be fired.

    4. Todd Bowles is a historically great Defensive Coordinator and deserves another shot at being a Head Coach.

    5. Gerald McCoy while somewhat soft and a tad over-rated is not the sole reason the Bucs were terrible when he was here.

At least now you can get a solid idea of who I’m not. Because the people I’m being accused of being could never bring themselves to say any of those things. The only reason I got in trouble was I went after the Joes one too many times.

  29. Fred mcneil Says:

If we ignore dingleberry he’ll go find someone else to annoy.
    I never argue with idiots.

  30. bucsfan951 Says:

    dingle

you don’t think the joes doesn’t already know who you are? i doubt you have a new ip address just so you can go onto joe buc (sorry joes)

  31. bucsfan951 Says:

and sorry dude, i am not playing the guessing game on who you are. im too grown to play stupid games like guess who.

  32. 1sparkybuc Says:

I stop reading whenever I see “Dingle………”. I’m not wasting my time.

  33. Steven007 Says:

If dingle were a Pat’s fan he would have roasted belichick for drafting N’keal Harry instead of DK Metcalf. Or if he were a raiders fan he would have roasted Mayock and gruden for drafting Ferrell instead of Josh Allen, Brian Burns and others. It’s easy to be contrarian. But to pretend you know more football than scouts GM’s and coaches who forget more in one evening then you’ve ever known is not arrogant, it’s stupid. It’s really just that simple.

I’ll tell you what this guy actually is, a bodybuilding workout warrior with decent athleticism and bad tape/ technique.

    ————————–

You think he looks like a bodybuilder? Now that makes it two sports you know nothing about. The dude is lean… and that’s it. He’s skinny if anything… and how does a “workout warrior” have decent athleticism? The term “workout warrior” was coined to describe guys that workout and show athleticism but don’t show it on the field. Please tell me that there is at least one subject you have at least a rudimentary knowledge base of… because football and bodybuilding is not it for you.

  35. DingleBerry Says:

Bro you never heard of a VPN or a proxy?

I gave you sufficient clues to figure out who I’m not. If you can’t figure that out its on you.

  36. Steven007 Says:

Brandon, interestingly the term workout warrior became popular after the eagles overdrafted Mike mamula instead of a certain player named Warren Sapp. While sapp is a Hall of famer, mamula actually had a decent career just not commensurate with his draft position which was top 10. Tryon has solid tape, I’ll bend to the experts including our GM and scouts on that, not some JBF poster with delusions of grandeur. The fact is we will know soon enough. Any talk aside from that is being contrarian for simple attention grabbing reasons. Nothing more than that no matter how often he posts the same thing. He knows nothing more than you or I. And he knows it.

  37. MadMax Says:

Jeeeeze, calm down guys lol. But dang this is great entertainment…who needs a freaking television, i stopped watching that thing 3 years ago.

I like the Tryon pick, but he has room for improvement. I think he’ll be fine. I think we wouldve benefitted much more from Landon, but ish happens and here we are. Love our 4th rounder Jaelon, he’s gonna be a hit.

  38. DingleBerry Says:

    @Brandon

    *sigh*

Dude, google Joe Tryon shredded, the dude literally looks like a super hero. Sure he might not be rocked up like dudes who are juiced to the gills like Ronnie Coleman or Lou Ferrigno but you can tell he has some serious gym muscles.

Licht himself is on record admitting that part of the reason he valued Tryon so highly was due to being impressed by his workouts. His athletic scores are much better than his tape. Therefore he is a work out warrior.

Seriously go and watch him for yourself versus Boise St and Washington St. 2 nothing special programs with nothing offensive lines and he just look like a guy. Nothing special or eye popping.

And after that go and watch Jaelan Phillips vs Duke if you want to see what a legitimate 1st round Edge rusher prospect looks like. There is a very good reason why Phillips went so high despite injury concerns.

Then after that go and watch Azeez Ojulari versus Tennessee and look at the edge rusher we should have taken instead of Tryon.

  39. Capt.Tim Says:

With his quick step and flexibility, he reminds me of a young Charles Haley!
Ya gotta be old to remember him.
Haley had a fantastic career, as a pass rush specialist.
Haley could play the run eventually.
I think Tryon can play a Pass rush specialist, and special teamer for a bit.
Im excited to see him chasing QBs

  40. jvato24 Says:

To say someone will be a 4 sack guy because his technique was raw as a college sophomore is some bold stuff

  41. Buc50 Says:

Again, you’re mistaking me for someone who cares who you are…

JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS, DINGLE DID NOT LIKE PICKS IN RDS 1 AND 2, IF YOU HAVENT READ.

  43. CalBucsFan Says:

Nice piece Joe, too many look at statistics only, and who else was in the huddle with them and forget that football is the ultimate team sport.

  44. SB Says:

    DB55 is that you?

  45. SB Says:

Oooops I think I got it right as that last comment got me put in the corner.

  46. SB Says:

Mr. 55 is that you disguised as a piece of bunghole clinger?

  47. DingleBerry Says:

SB… Did you not read what I said about Gerald McCoy? How could I be DB55 if I could say that? So no I’m not him lol.

  48. Mike28277 Says:

    DingleBerry: glass 1/2 empty.

  49. Steven007 Says:

Dingle, trust me, no one’s losing sleep over your former JBF poster name, haha. Let’s be real. You were obviously trolling before or you wouldn’t have been banned. Just give it some time now.

  50. DingleBerry Says:

Nope, not a troll now and I never was, I got banned for calling the Joe’s out for saying dumb crap a few too many times and they took umbrage with that.

Literally the only reason I felt the need to clarify is because multiple people began accusing me of being someone I’m not.

  51. Steven007 Says:

I give you credit for admitting that you’ve said dumb stuff on multiple occasions. I don’t think that’ll be a hard sell for many here. As for being accused of someone you’re not, I’m sure they’ll just add you to the list.

  52. Sport Says:

Umbrage…vocabulary. haven’t seen St Pete around lately?

    In BA I Trust!

  53. DingleBerry Says:

Stevie boy you either misread what I wrote or you misunderstood it.

I called the Joes out when they were saying dumb crap.

The only dumb things I’ve really ever said on this site were typo related. Or just getting too emotionally invested in an argument and wanting to make someone feel insulted. But most of the time I honestly feel like I’m one of the most reasonable commenters on the site.

  54. DingleBerry Says:

Also I’m pretty sure that StPete isn’t banned and also wouldn’t have any reason to change his name to DingleBerry.

  55. Steven007 Says:

Thanks for the clarification. So you called the Joe’s out for saying dumb stuff on multiple occasions. Got it. Carry on.

  56. Steven007 Says:

Sport, St Pete makes cogent, rational comments and loves the team too much to prematurely call draft picks failures within mere moments of their being drafted. He never liked JW but supported him because he was the Bucs quarterback. That’s what a fan does. The Dingle isn’t St Pete.
