Shaq Barrett Wants Defensive Player Of The Year Award

April 5th, 2021

Describes post-Super-Bowl hunger

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett was asked a great question about his motivation on the KJZ show on ESPN Radio recently, and Shaq unleashed an answer that felt like the relentless pass rush he tortured Patrick Mahomes with two months ago.

Shaq was doubted on the air and asked why anyone should believe that he won’t be like many players that enjoy a fat paycheck, a Super Bowl ring and fame and, and then let off the gas a bit on the field.

Man, that question got Shaq to accelerate his pace of speech and reveal his internal fire.

“I finished the season real good, but I didn’t play the way I wanted to play throughout the whole entire year. So I still need to come back and show what I can do when I’m playing the way I want to play the whole entire year. I still want to get a Defensive Player of the Year [award]. I still wanna break the sack record. I wanna be the one that’s known as one of the best ever when I’m done playing football. I want to leave a tremendous football legacy. So I’m still striving to be the best I can be. I don’t care about having the rings already; the way I’m going to be playing, it’s going to be feeling like I want another one. It’s going to be like I don’t have [a ring] the way I’m going to be playing.

“It’s going to be like I don’t have a contract, the way I’m going to be playing because I want to keep building everything and I want to have career-best [numbers] every year. I’m just still so hungry. It’s like the tip of the iceberg for me.”

Not much Joe can add to that.

Get’em Shaq!

    Love it!
Glad he wanted to be a part of this team

  2. SlyPirate Says:

Imagine it. Plan it. Do it. Be it.

We’ve seen him succeed. No reason to not believe.

  3. Chris Thomas from Heaven Says:

All i want is 2 eggs, side by each & bacon parallel

  4. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Say Less

  5. Winny Testaverde Says:

There’s no reason he can’t win DPOY. Even Ira the Institution of NFL knowledge mentioned that Shaq had the best 5-6 game stretch in early 2019 he’s ever seen. I think Shaq could benefit from Suh’s personal chef as even he would admit he’s had a bit of a “boiler” problem throughout his college & NFL career.

CB’s Law of Rhetorical Econiomics 1: “The reason ‘Talk is Cheap’ is because the supply exceeds the demand.

Show us, Shaq. Chisel your body, gain more muscle, keep the speed and become a maniac. Do it, don’t talk about it.

  7. windbaggery Says:

Whatever it takes for incentive. Glad he is setting his goals high even on his fat salary. He’s a good guy. Go Shaq!

19.5 sacks may not happen again for him… but somewhere between last year’s 8 and the previous 19.5 would be sweet… between 13-15 with constant disruption would be worth his salary.

  8. Topdoggie Says:

Dam how far we gave cime since swaggy Baker. Robbed the Glazer bank and walked away without so much as a scolding. Like Shaq more and more each day.

  9. J.Allen Lofton Says:

The infectious attitude displayed by Shag is what will keep everyone motivated to repeat again as Super Bowl champs. Go Bucs

  10. Pickgrin Says:

Swaggy Baker stole $9M from JL and the Glazers for 1 crappy season of play – yet never played another NFL game after the Bucs cut him. So that definitely seems like a karmic ‘scolding’ of sorts…..

Glad to hear Barrett publicly stating that he’s hungry to improve and that he has the desire to be considered among the NFLs best from a career perspective. Thats exactly what you want to hear from a guy who just cashed his $19M signing bonus check.

  11. PSL Bob Says:

Damn! Glad we have this dude locked in as a Buc. Raise the flag and fire the cannons – these Buc’s about to go marauding.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We’ve brought in some pretty miserable FAs……but Shaq is not one of them…

This guy loves Florida, Tampa, the Bucs…..he loves to play….he loves to talk….
he is a terror on the field…..he absolutely chased Mahomes all game…..

You’ve got to love Shaq Barrett….

  13. Durango 95 Says:

After reading that I’m ready to run through a brick wall.

  14. ClodHopper Says:

Weather he does any of those things or not, I’m dam proud to have a man like that wearing the pewter and red. He’s a pretty good role model and he already has a good enough story to teach my child and he will hear about Shaq when he’s old enough to get it.

  15. Bbro Says:

Get em ShaqB you can do it

  16. Cainishere Says:

Finally, he says something I am proud of. Good job Shaq, I am pulling for you.

  17. lambchop Says:

I hope he lives up to that hunger. I’m pretty sure most of the players will or they’ll be riding the bench, with the all-in mentality we have in the Tom Brady era of the Bucs!

Still can’t believe we have Tom Brady and how he changed the fortune of this franchise in a shortened season. That guy just doesn’t know anything except winning and proving people wrong.

  18. David Says:

    Do it!!!

  19. LongSeason Says:

Shaq, you might get DPOY. But you have two teammates that might have something to say about that. Lavonte and Devin will make it a three-way race for DPOY. This will be fun to watch.

  20. Marc O'Rubyo Says:

If Vita stays healthy the whole year, there’s a big chance Shaq will repeat his 2019 sack numbers and win DPOY.

  21. Razor Ramone Says:

    Chris, don’t forget “juice la’orange”.
