Details Found In The Numbers

Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells.

Two-time Super Bowl-winning coach and Pro Football Hall of Fame member Bill Parcells used to often say your best ability is your availability.

In other words, you cannot make plays and help the team win if you are soaking in the hot tub.

Using Parcells’ philosophy as a basis, it is easy to conclude how and why the Bucs’ front-seven is so damn good.

Later today, Bucs defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will be available to the local pen and mic club via Zoom after signing his new Bucs contract. In advance of that, the Bucs e-mailed out various stats on Suh.

A couple jumped out.

One is he currently holds the NFL record for consecutive games started for active players at 147. Cameron Jordan of the Saints is second at 142. It’s hard to believe two linemen would have that sort of durability.

Another stat that caught Joe’s eyes was NFL front-seven snap leaders for the past decade, 2010-20. The Bucs have three in the top five. Suh has 9,658. Lavonte David is second with 9,014 and Jason Pierre-Paul is fifth at 8,492.

Three front-seven defenders with the most snaps in a decade? No wonder the Bucs defense is strong up front. Something tells Joe that Parcells would have enjoyed coaching these guys.

I thought it was Chuck Noll who coined the phase, “The greatest ability is availability.”

Those are crazy stats but it makes me wonder how much more those boys have in their bodies? Points to our need to draft the next gen of d-lineman.

count on Suh, JPP, and David to have plenty more in their back pocket

Bill sure as hell didn’t make himself available to coach the Bucs.

I am sure OJ Howard is at the bottom of the list.

Gotta Wonder which team he would go in the hall with if he gets in. I think his durability, ferociousness are attributes which would’ve gotten a similar player and career in if they played in the 60s or 70s. Remember, every team he’s played against his head to face their best offensive defender.

Lack of success in Detroit < short. With the Rams falling short of SB win < His time under Bowles’s system and a SB ring. Could happen!

I wonder what it would take for someone to say that this defense is better than the 2002 defense?

Even if the current defense had the stats, it would be hard for Bucs fans to put nostalgia to the side and give an objective answer.

Only 142 huh? What a loser!! That was a lot closer before Suh got two extra games in this year. Maybe next year he can grow that spread by another 3 or 4.

One thing this says to me is that our greatest draft need is depth in the front 7. JPP is gonna have a drop off one of these years, hopefully not this coming season. We do not really have a solid #3 outside pass rusher. I’m not sure we could afford to lose Suh or Vea again. Nacho is probably hitting his ceiling and we don’t know how Khalil Davis will be as a run stopper.

Wow, so I’m other words David has played the most defensive snaps of anyone since he entered the league in 2012. That’s impressive. I hope he can close out his career with a few more all-pro seasons and SB titles and work himself into the HOF. That weak d-bag Luke got all the headlines – but it was David who was the better player, and didn’t quit the game because he got a booboo on his head – and it should be David going into the hall.

  11. David Says:

The fact that JPP is there with his firework expertise and neck injury is pretty basic

  12. TOM Says:

I hope you read this Howard. Heed the words of Bill Parcells.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Irony: The Bucs now have as many superbowl titles as Bill. Soon to have more!
