Movin’ On Up

April 26th, 2021

Dealing.

No, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht doesn’t need a deluxe apartment in the sky. He’s got a nice pad in South Tampa despite his dog staining the kitchen floor and his pool unused.

(C’mon Jason, where is the pool-jumping video of you celebrating your team that you built winning the Super Bowl?)

But one guy typing for CBS Sports thinks Licht is going to be trading on up in the first round of this week’s draft. Cody Benjamin said given the fact the Bucs are Going for Two, there is all the incentive in the world for Licht to put the Bucs in a better position to land a quality prospect on Thursday night.

They’re not overflowing with picks, entering the draft with eight total and just one in each of the first six rounds. But they are still quarterbacked by Tom Brady, who will be 44 in the fall and is bent on running it back rather than building for the long term. Who says they won’t be aggressive to add an immediate starter or luxury depth piece for their Super Bowl defense?

Well, Joe agrees with this in principle. However, Joe doesn’t think Licht trades up in the first round.

Licht already publicly admitted that if he were offered a trade back for fifth-round picks, would those guys actually make his loaded roster? Probably not.

Joe has heard that the “sweet spot” of this year’s draft is between, roughly, picks Nos. 35-52. So given Licht’s success with second-round picks (of 11 second-round picks as GM, six picks started for the Bucs’ Super Bowl-winning squad), Joe could easily see or expect Licht to trade up into the second round on Friday night, using his third-day picks as ammo.

Licht could also trade down into the 2nd & then trade up giving him 2 good 2nd round picks.

I agree, I don’t see him trading up….and Benjamin says perhaps he will find an immediate starter…..just who, exactly, would he replace?

  2. SB~LV Says:

I have no problem with getting THE player, whoever that is, anytime in the draft especially in the first two days, rounds 1-3.

  3. Pewter941 Says:

This will be an interesting draft indeed, most of our picks will not make the roster, and the only position where we can draft a starter for this year would be runningback.

  4. bojim Says:

Agreed. Two 2nd round picks would be nice.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Hurry up Thursday. All the speculation about what the Bucs will do is getting rather, oh ya, speculative.

One thing I do believe about the Bucs’ drafting … JL may be taking the bows right now on Joe Bucs Fan, but I still think that no one gets drafted for this defense unless Todd Bowles wants him and no one gets drafted for this offense unless Bruce Arians & Tom Brady wants him. Much more of a collaborative effort IMO than on many (and maybe most) teams.

  6. Mike Says:

I have been saying all along that if there is a guy the Bucs love and he falls to the early to mid 20’s, then I can see them going up to get him. My guess is that it would be an Edge type player who can have an impact on a rotational basis and perhaps replace JPP after this season.

  7. Magicbuc Says:

Move up in Round 1 get rid of a bunch of picks that won’t make the team this year anyways.

  8. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

I think Licht will explore moving up depending on how the board falls. Our roster is stacked, and there is likely not enough room on it for all of our picks. If trading up a few spots lands the player (likely edge) that he most covets, I think he will do it.

  9. Medicated Pete Says:

Licht needs to fleece someone on Thursday or Friday

  10. MadMax Says:

Landon Dickerson at 32, then trade up mid 2nd for our new speedy KR/PR fast WR Rondale Moore….then DT Darius Stills. There, draft is done lol.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

Yah I’d like it if he somehow lands a high 2nd and they have 2 2nd round picks.

  12. Joe Says:

Landon Dickerson at 32, then trade up mid 2nd for our new speedy KR/PR fast WR Rondale Moore….then DT Darius Stills. There, draft is done lol.

Max, you like brittle guys, huh? 🙂

  13. Adrnagy Says:

We need a dynamic defense player like z Collins or surtain lll.

But if fields falls and we stay. Pick him up ASAP.

Or trade 1 rd for Odell b jr

  14. Bucs Bro Says:

If I was a GM I’d never draft 6 or 7th rounders and use those picks to move up in the 3rd and 4th round or trade them for future higher picks. The likelihood of those picks making it on the roster and contributing is so small that I’d rather have extra picks in the 3rd-5th round over having 6th and 7th rounders every year

  15. gotbbucs Says:

I can’t see Licht just sitting tight at 32. He loves to move around in the draft.

  16. Aaron Says:

I’d like to see us trade down – get a pick for 2022. Then draft a player like Landon Dickerson…if necessary, put him on IR for the year to get ready for 2022. Then take a shot at a DE with our second 2nd round pick. There will be plenty of late free agents we can pick up for vet min to help us run it back.

I know its not a sexy pick but I really like RB Javonte Williams.

  17. MadMax Says:

He’ll be fine Joe….lol, i knew i was gonna get it eventually from you. But after his injuries, he always battled back. Looks like he can handle some injuries, at least we have seen that. Big V injured, Cappa injured, but they battle back into mix. Who replaces Jensen if he went down?

  18. Joeypoppems Says:

Im not expecting a trade up. Im hoping for DL or WR tbh. DL if a quality guy falls, but with this WR class, very good chance that “BPA” at 32 is a WR. Elijah Moore is a realistic possibility if they go that route

  19. Bucanero Says:

Licht gets paid handsomely for what most of us do as a hobby in draft season. I am sure he knows the true value of later round picks in this draft. Me? I just know the top 40-50 players so sure I want them to trade the farm to get 2 first round picks because I simply don’t know the market as Licht should know. We also have a large coaching staff and I suspect that means we can cook instead of ordering out. No, I expect the Bucs to get value out of the draft. We have some fire power to make moves in the 2nd or 3rd round but trades in the first tend to be too expensive and we are way down the line. That said, as a statement it might be interesting to go on with the narrative on how the Bucs are all in but who is a player worth moving 10 spots or more? Kwity Paye?

  20. Joe Says:

I’d like to see us trade down – get a pick for 2022. Then draft a player like Landon Dickerson…if necessary, put him on IR for the year to get ready for 2022.

    ????????

Don’t you want your first pick to be on the field helping the team win a second-straight Super Bowl???

And if you are picking a guy who is that much damaged goods to put him on IR right away, doesn’t that scream “Stay away.”

(And yeah, Dickerson’s injury history for a lineman should be a red flag.)

  21. Pewter941 Says:

I like Whitehead but I feel like we can improve at the safety position, also we lost Adams, so he needs to be replaced.

  22. Robert Says:

JL loves to trade up…. and if it is for an immediate impact player, or someone to replace AB you better bet he will do it.

If he trades up it will be for OL, DL/Edge or WR…..duh, I know.

  23. lambchop Says:

    Did someone say 2022? LOL.

The point is we need quality rotational and quality depth in case of injuries. This person absolutely will be in the mix for a 17-game stretch. Where are we ageing? Obviously, QB, but Brady is an exception with the way he focuses on his health. Next would be Edge and DT.

I would bet Doge that the Bucs get an Edge guy or a DT in the 1st Rd. If they don’t move up, I can see the Bucs staying put and possibly get Quinn Meiners for OL depth in the 2nd. If they move up in the 2nd, it will probably be for a guy slipping in the draft. Otherwise, I think they’ll likely stay put.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

I meant to add…of course they gotta get more than that other 2nd pick cause 32 is basically nearly a 2nd rounder anyways.

  25. Mitch Says:

Trading down might be a good option. It doesn’t feel like there is a lot of top end talent in this draft. If they can’t get who they want at 32 draft down between 33-50 and getting an extra third round pick would be fine.

  26. Swampbuc Says:

    Cody Benjamin is a moron.

  27. MrSandman Says:

The smartest but unpopular way is to trade Mike Evans for a huge draft value. Maybe t Bucs can sign AB cheap, and this draft is deep with WR. Besides, the bucs also is crowded with WR.

  28. MadMax Says:

Rondale Moore was just on nfl network….Im telling you, we need this kid! Intelligent, physically gifted, great attitude….i dont think he will last past mid 2nd, or even 34-38. I know he’s 5’7 but those small strong speedy guys with a good head are what you want….and whats weakest dept? KR/PR

  29. Swampbuc Says:

Mr Sandman is more of a moron than Cody Benjamin. While we’re at it, let’s trade Lavonte David, Ali Marpet and Leroy Selmon.

It’s unpopular because it is the most stupid idea ever published on this here internets.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

They’re not overflowing with picks, entering the draft with eight total and just one in each of the first six rounds…

Just the normal amount of picks plus an extra one. That actually does put them over the average, so yes, they are overflowing.

As to whether Licht will trade up…I think it is very possible. It’s not like they have the roster spots to use on the number of picks they have. Trading some away is a very high probability.

Whether they do it in the first round? I guess we’ll see.

Personally, I think getting rid of rounds 4-7 to gain an extra 2nd rounder would be smart. That would give them 4 picks, three of them premium.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And it’s not likely rounds 4-7 will make the roster this year…unless someone really stands out in camp.

  32. Oxycondoms Says:

What is the usual compensation for trading back from that spot?

  33. stpetebucsfan Says:

What if there is no player in the top ten even who would break into this starting lineup? Depth? I get that. Future? Nah if it’s the future then trade the pick and load up for next year.

  34. Bruce Blahak Says:

trade down from 32 maybe if a major pick doesn’t fall in their lap, and get two 2nds in the “sweet” spot.

  35. Cainishere Says:

QB at 32 trade your 6th and last picks for another 2nd rounder. Get QB Dline online and RB

  36. MadMax Says:

Alright, CB Mac Mccain just made my list….

    1. Landon Dickerson
    2. (in a trade up) Rondale Moore
    3. DT Darius Stills
    4. Mac Mccain (if hes still there)

  37. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

    MrSandman, go back to sleep.

  38. Allbuccedup Says:

Ryan Jensen was a sixth round pick. We need not worry about a center until day three. Definitely don’t waste pick 32 on an injury prone center or any center for that matter.

  39. MadMax Says:

^^ So was Brady, I know i know, we can find em later…but whats the chances? Give me your 6th round sleeper we dont know about….I’ll wait.

Unbelievable undrafted value is also out there…many stories. But we’re in go for 2 mode. And Im not gonna pretend that RG spot isnt a weakness. Plug him in at RG and let him give Jensen some breathers…win-win all the way around. And yeah, injuries happen, but he bounces back. And then when we need a Center in the future, there he is.

  40. Allbuccedup Says:

Trade this years first round pick and next years first round pick for two second rounders and two third rounders and we will be set for two years.

  41. Mike Says:

Trade up target could be Jaelan Phillips. That guy can be scary good.

  42. Swampbuc Says:

Thankfully Licht is in charge and not some of the imbecillen posting here.

  43. SC Bucs Fan Says:

    Vea option picked up

  44. catcard202 Says:

The Bucs FO will be able to find value & talent at the back end of each round, at least through the 5th…Will it be sexy picks, doubtful…But adding depth & rotational pcs to this roster is very important…Especially knowing the # of 2022 UFA that are on the 2021 roster.

  45. geno711 Says:

If people thinking Landon Dickerson than why not Creed Humphrey. I think I read in three years starting the guy NEVER gave up a sack. Think that is pretty impressive.

  46. EA Says:

I don’t care where they draft as long as at least 4 picks go towards beefing up the trenches.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Joe you got me amped up all day with your article about that Gator, Toney.

Now you talking this trade up business. That would be exciting to see Licht make a bold move to add another playmaker to this team! Im all for it.

Im trying to catch up on my Bucs news over here and Ill hand it to ya. Your Bucs draft coverage is top notch.

  48. SB~LV Says:

Landon Dickerson is an outstanding athlete, outstanding human being, smart, thing is that he has had two knee surgeries and one other medical ding !
    No !
    @ 1
    No @2
    Maybe at 3

  49. SB~LV Says:

Elijah Moore is a guy worth trading up for, somewhere in front of the Saints

  50. DoooshLaRue Says:

Yeah Max, gotta pass on Landon, too much of a gamble.
Agree that Creed would be a much better choice.

  51. MadMax Says:

Hey if Creed is there, then yes, he’s also on my radar but he’s going before we pick….

I dont know, my gut keeps telling me Landon though. Its a hard sell, but so was Vea, White and Wirfs. Maybe he’s there in the 2nd and we can trade back and land him and Moore, or DT Nixon.

  52. Buc92’ Says:

A trade up or sit at 32 only makes sense , even tho we won the big dance doesn’t mean we don’t have players that can’t be beat out . Teams change , the game changes as well . Some players might not be as hungry as last year never know . #GoBucs

  53. David Says:

I agree. I see him trying to get 4 picks between pick #32 and end rd 3.
He can get some serious value and depth/special team players there.
I do not see him trading up in the first round because the salary cap

    DL/LB
    OL
    WR/returner

I think those 3 positions are drafted within the first 4 rounds.
I can see them trading up to pick them all within the first 3 rounds

  54. David Says:

For the record, I cannot watch ESPN, or Pro Football Talk, or most websites anymore. I can barely look at GMFB any more, even though I love that show.

Everyone and their mother has had 20 mock drafts already.
They have talked about almost every possibility in this draft.
They have said every team is going to take every player possible in the first round at this point. 😂
    The overkill is too much.
And half the time they’re talking about nothing but quarterbacks.
    Just have the draft already!!!!

  55. IrishMist Says:

    What would Weezy do?

  56. SB~LV Says:

I saw a mock today where the Cowboys traded to 32 giving the Bucs their 45 and 75
ESPN-NFL Network… those talking heads must be sick of talking about the draft

  57. Oxycondoms Says:

So you get rid of your first round pick for a crappier second round pick and basically your left with the number 75 pick which is out of the “sweet spot”?

  58. SB~LV Says:

    ^
    Simple minds

  59. David Says:

    MADMAX

    NO LANDON DICKINSON

The guys knees are trash already. If you want to take a flyer that could be good value because of injuries, do it in round 4, possibly 3.
    Round 1 & 2 should not be a gamble. That’s just idiotic.

Besides, they have a young starting O line and the top 3 back ups all signed. They want immediate help to win this year and next. The best way to do that is DL (where age is a factor) and a returner/5th wideout.

They absolutely should take OL before round 4 though, Every team should always

  60. David Says:

    SB~LV

Yep. At this point half the analysts on TV will be able to say they predicted something correctly because they’ve thrown everything possible at the wall, it’s ridiculous

  61. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Irish,

Weezy just gonna be smokin some of dat Sherm baby!

  62. MadMax Says:

Ok David thank you for your input…i really do appreciate it.

This is a hobby, Im not paid, never earn anything other than watching my guys that I pull for, win. Its so funny, Big V when I was lobbying for him was laughed at, Devin White (#5 is too high for him, NO!) and then Wirfs, he cant play tackle, he’ll be a Guard.

Ok then, we’ll see, but I stand my ground! I know my gut and Im always dialed in with my beloved Bucs drafts.
