Jason Licht’s Wild Ride

April 26th, 2021

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Joe guesses this is an indirect hat tip to Team Glazer. For if they were not patient, Joe doubts we would still be waking up with hangovers on Saturday mornings from still celebrating the Bucs winning the Super Bowl.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht had ups and downs in his seven years as Bucs general manager. The lowest lows and highest highs. Very, very rarely can any general manager claim to have picked No. 1 overall and at No. 32 with the same team without making a trade.

And guys who do that tend to find themselves with a bust in Canton. That’s just history.

One of Joe’s favorite stat guys, gambling Warren Sharp, pointed out how crazy Licht’s tenure with the Bucs has been.

Joe thinks we can all admit that if you have enough time at your job, you can and will learn as the years go on. It sure seems as if that has happened with Licht.

Now he’s going to earn his pay picking at No. 32 this week — yes, this week, finally! Even Licht admitted that picking last in the first round presents challenges but he hopes to pick there for years to come.

So too does Joe.

And if Team Glazer didn’t offer Licht patience and time to develop, who knows what kind of team Joe would be writing about today?

Dude barely made it by the skin of his teeth. Brady is making everyone look like a genius (Arians & The Glazer Kids).

  2. Ben green Says:

    Brady

  3. SB Says:

No offense but when I read the title Joe I reverted back to being a kid and climbing on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

  4. SB Says:

Also I am glad your filters finally let me out of the corner

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Licht led to BA…..BA led to Brady & Bowles…….Brady led to Gronk, AB & Fournette, Bowles led to White & Winfield….

It all started with Licht….or to be exact….the Glazers.

  6. JGhotier Says:

    Off topic, but Bucs related….

The QB for Central Michigan that was shot over the weekend at a party was w/ another person who was shot as well named Tyler Bunting.

Bunting is not a popular last name and Sean Bunting played for Central Michigan too. I’m hoping it’s not a family member of Sean’s.

Prayers and wishing good health 🙏

  7. Natron Says:

The Glazers should give Brady a % of this team

  8. Winny Testaverde Says:

Big brother Bruce Arians to the rescue…Licht was getting beat up after 5 seasons. In fact…it would interesting to see if a GM in NFL history before him lasted until a 6th season with an overall record hovering around .333 after the first 5 seasons. He was worse off than Dominik in fact after 5 seasons.

Incredibly…Sir Tom Brady the pewter knight arrived and it is all now a Hollywood ending/dream. Even Licht’s wife has forgiven Ira ( per the podcast ) for understandably calling for a firing. Very few women can resist the eye candy that Ira is.

  9. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Spot on. I believe he deserved to be fired before but we kept him through the learning curve. It was a steep price to pay (consistent losing) but at least now it seems we can reap the benefits of patience instead of another team…

  10. Nancy Laflash Says:

Jason Licht is a Blessing in his picks for the Bucs. Thank you!!!

  11. Casual Observer Says:

With his obvious learning curve, I think we can expect a (another) dynamite draft by our GM this week.

  12. Mike Says:

Bucs have figured out the process of evaluation in the draft and how to pick the players that best fit the Bucs culture and scheme. If we can hit on just 2-3 picks each year, we will have a very good team for some time to come.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

    Brady.

  14. a-bomb Says:

Actually, it should be recalled that Lovie Smith brought in Licht, who brought in Arians, who brought in Brady. So, we can thank Lovie for the Lombardi!

  15. SlyPirate Says:

a-bomb … and Tony Dungy gave us Lovie. So once again, Dungy’s team is the reason we won a Super Bowl.

  16. Chris Boyd Says:

medicated pete, you’re right, to a degree. But Licht put together a roster that was appealing for Brady, and he deserves to be commended for that. If Brady didn’t believe he could win here, he would have chose a different team

  17. D-Rome Says:

The Glazers need to stay out of football decisions moving forward. Hiring Arians and signing Brady were clearly wins. Perhaps in a couple of years Licht has try and pry Aaron Rodgers away from Green Bay.

  18. Joe Says:

Perhaps in a couple of years Licht has try and pry Aaron Rodgers away from Green Bay.

Check out Aaron Rodgers’ record in warm-weather cities. It ain’t pretty.

  19. Steve M.] Says:

Roger’s one of the greatest of all time, good or bad weather is worth the risk. He might be the second coming of TB12.

  20. Dj stick Says:

Thats what’s wrong with the world they want to look before the project is finnished

  21. Winny Testaverde Says:

Rodger’s in theory is a good idea…BUT…he has always bellyached about RayJay…he’s getting married to a Hollywood starlet ( rut-row ) and might prefer being the host of Jeopardy. He’s no TB12…never will be.

  22. catcard202 Says:

IMO, the “Brady Effect” has Jason Licht looking like the 2020 GM of the YR & new FO rock star, since winning the SB.

As we all witnessed last season…The Fighting Belicheats fell apart as soon as TB12 left Bean Town…& the mystique of the “Patriot Way” went out the door with him.

  23. Natron Says:

    All hail Lovie Smith!!!!

  24. Buczilla Says:

It’s a great time to be a Buc’s fan and good on Licht for persevering and becoming the best gm we’ve ever had.
