Tristan Wirfs Talks Draft-Night Surprise, Ryan Jensen’s $3,000 Wine Order And Achieving His No. 1 Goal (Not The Super Bowl)

March 19th, 2021

Right tackle phenom Tristan Wirfs.

Joe can’t get enough of right tackle Tristan Wirfs, the baddest 2020 rookie in the land and perhaps the best tackle in football — period.

Wirfs checked in with the Going Deep podcast recently and shared a few fresh angles on his world.

First, Wirfs talked about his draft-night surprise. He said he was holding his phone when the New York Giants were set to pick at No. 4 overall. They didn’t take him.

Ok, said Wirfs. No biggie. “I was like, all right, it’s gotta be Browns or Jets” next.

When Cleveland and the Jets passed, Wirfs temporarily checked out mentally. “I put my phone back in my pocket and was just hanging out watching,” he said.

Why didn’t Wirfs then expect to go to the Bucs? That’s unclear … and the rest is history.

Was winning a Super Bowl Wirfs’ No. 1 rookie goal? Apparently not.

“That was probably my biggest goal: to not make [Tom Brady] upset or anything. That’s what I was most scared of, 100 percent most scared of coming into this season, getting yelled at by Tom. … That was my main priority.”

Wirfs went on to say Brady never yelled at him but did scream at the entire offensive line during the Bears game.

After a miserable, penalty-filled drive, Wirfs said he thought the Bucs’ O-line just needed to relax and shake it off, but Brady came over and ripped the unit a new one as Wirfs recalled Brady saying, ‘Wake the fu** up.”

As for rookie hazing, Wirfs said he did endure paying for the famous rookie meal. (Joe thought players didn’t get out to restaurants during COVID?) Anyway, Wirfs said a visit to the Hard Rock with the offensive line cost him about $16,000, thanks in part to a $3,000 bottle of wine ordered by Ryan Jensen. Wirfs said the wine “was horrible.” He said he prefers Barefoot Rosé.

On facing Shaq Barrett in training camp, a grueling task Wirfs has talked about previously, Wirfs said, “Sometimes I’d feel like I’d blink and he’d be behind me.” He went on to talk more about how depressed he was early in camp, going home and wondering how he’d figure out the NFL quickly.

Wow, how lucky he didn’t land in New York with either team. He got a ring.

  2. Chris Thomas from Heaven Says:

My jaw hit the floor when K. Mack hip-tossed Wirfs in that Bears game. I didn’t think it was possible. Wirfs has been the man ever since

  3. Cainishere Says:

Interesting behind the scenes info Joe. Tristan, depressed? I am sure he is okay now that he is considered one of the best at his position. I like the guy, his jumps out of the swimming pool are a scary sight to behold, hope he doesn’t do that anymore. lol GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. DaBux Says:

One of the best draft selections in Bucs history.

  5. Tampabaybucsfan Says:

Jensen doesn’t strike me as the $3K bottle type..more like a Boon’s Farm Apple Wine guy….

  6. Tampabaybucsfan Says:

    Boone’s Farm

  7. firethecannons Says:

as a mother I cannot imagine a more rewarding experience than raising Tristan into the man he is. Job well done! A great life just getting started!

I was actually impressed by the way Wirfs just rolled with it, and popped right back up. Might have saved himself a dislocated shoulder.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So, we have a New acronym…

    FOB

    “Fear Of Brady”

  10. Chris Thomas from Heaven Says:

    @ Jason

Good point. That’s how I’m gonna see it from now on.

  11. Bird Says:

Go back and look at the posts after that game
    😂

All doom and gloom. Bradys leadership was questioned big time
Ndog was laughing at people. And now he is gone
    😂

Was that the 4 down game too
Joe should eat a big crow after that lambasting

  12. Bird Says:

Jensen with a 3000 bottle of wine. Ouch.

Thats just making a rook pay up

  13. Steven007 Says:

Barefoot Rose? The rook has a lot to learn… When it comes to wine. But he’s a hell of a player. Glad he’s on my team.

  14. Stanglassman Says:

Jensen does however seem like the guy who’d order a 3k bottle to haze the rook.

  15. MadMax Says:

So glad Mr. Licht agreed with me again on the Wirfs selection. We’re on a roll…Marpet, Vea, White, Wirfs …we getting better at this.

Now we need Freiermuth or Etienne at #32 … I’d be fine with trading back a few spots, but it better be a good deal from next year’s draft. We need to think about who will sit under Brady for a year in 2022 and be ready to possibly move up in that draft. OT/G Jackson Carman if we do trade back…he’ll be gone by the top 5-10 of the 2nd round.

  16. Beeej Says:

I remember a couple decades ago when Tony Mandarich got drafted by the Packers for their O line. He stepped off the plane, looked around, and said Green Bay was nothing but a village and they were lucky to have him. His career lasted about 2 or 3 years

  17. Bird Says:

    Off topic

But have you been following deshaun watson. Whoa.
I was worried he would come to carolina. Or miami who we play next year. Think that is done

He may be untouchable for a while
There are 12 lawsuits now and apparently the lawyer is saying 10 more woman in the waiting room

Hit job or not. There are receipts of him paying a masseuse in atlanta to fly to houston to give him a massage in a hotel. The masseuse had to know something was up honestly . How could you not . Again not saying it wasnt this or that. But He has to be smarter then that these days being a celebrity

He is a stud too. He doesnt need to pay for that trouble. Or presumed anything

  18. cmurda Says:

@TBBF. Agreed. Jensen definitely seems like a $5 a bottle type of dude. He clearly was just busting the rookie’s gonads.

  19. Bird Says:

    Mad dog 2020

    Thats wine right?

  20. Rod Munch Says:

My girlfriend likes Barefoot, which is good since it’s like $6 a bottle or something. I have no issue with spending money, but I don’t get expensive wine, in paricular when it tastes like garbage. It’s like buying some expensive beer – it always tastes like garbage, and the dumb hippies that like it will tell you that’s because it’s an acquired taste. Go f yourself, cheap water down beer taste 100x better than that bitter IPA garbage.

  21. Bird Says:

Juju signs for 1 yr 8 mil. Ouch.

No receiver market this year so godwin likely not gonna make a deal with us

Especially with cap going crazy next year.

  22. Bojim Says:

    Guess Jensen’s got a nice pallet. 😉

  23. Bird Says:

    Ouch

Texans got tyrod taylor a few days ago. Just signed Ryan finley

  24. Bird Says:

Market may be set for playoff lenny

Carson just signed 2 years 14 mil

  25. TampaTown Says:

Excuse me… Barefoot Rose? That has got to be the worst wine on the market. $3000 wine? I’m guessing it was something in the Lafite family. I love Opus One myself, just not the 2016, that was a bad year IMO

  26. Kentucky Buc Says:

That’s all so true about the IPAs and the people who drink that crap. @Rod Munch lol

  27. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Munch, you need to improve your palate. IPA’s, particularly hoppy IPA’s, are fantastic beverages. Plenty of ABV and tasty as well.

  28. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Wirfs was my highest rated tackle in the draft. I was at a draft day party, and none of us could believe he fell so far.
Many of us thought Licht could have stayed put and still got him, but we got him, and that is all that matters.

  29. Adrnagy Says:

    BS

  30. Adrnagy Says:

If Carson plugged a 2yr $14m , Lenny is probably asking more $ than him , licht’s game if falling right on his lap on this one. Not like shaq. Specially the years. If shaq suck the next 3 yrs we are stuck with him.

$74m in cap next year and vea , d. Smith. , cappa. C Davis jpp, Godwin and acouple more are FA.

  31. MadMax Says:

^ Yeah, I think about JPP and still want Zaven Collins to bring along, but no way he will make it past Cleveland, and we just cant trade up now that we’re bringing Barrett and David back. But seriously, if somehow Zaven was sitting there at 32, we’d be fools not to.

  32. Adrnagy Says:

Drafting olb edge will depend imo how a. Nelson performs. Bowles will dump him a lot in the first 5-6 games.
And how the draft plays out. Trading out is the best option unless there’s a good player

  33. Adrnagy Says:

Wirfs turn out a beast. We shall see a year under him and teams/ players having film.
I wanted kinlaw or Ruiz. I remember a lot of folks in here wanting delpit.

  34. CharlieV Says:

Just think how good he will be this season and for seasons to come. If he stays healthy we will watch a hall of famer earn his jacket!

  35. Bird Says:

    Always

    He hate me

  36. Bird Says:

Thats awesome you all can drop a dime
    I cant

  37. Bucsfan951 Says:

“If shaq suck the next 3 yrs we are stuck with him.“

I seriously laugh at ppl sometimes…

I ran into Ryan at the International Mall, my dude had about 4-5 Louis Vuitton bags in his hands! (HE’S LIKE JONAH HILL IN WARDOGS, “I LIKE FANCY SH!T, IT’S KINDA MY THING”) anyways, I was like yo Ryan! I said lefts get em this week!!! He kindly acknowledged, and then got into a mini monster truck lol!!! He’s AWESOME!!! Who finishes blocks better than him?!!! Keep crushing em big fella and order whatever you want.

  43. K2 Says:

A weak move buy Jensen… A $10 million a year man sticking it to a rookie. I like Jensen…but not cool. I guess money doesn’t mean anything to rich guys. Sapp pick up a few tabs, in his day, and didn’t stick it to the rookies.
