Tom Brady Gets An Extension

March 12th, 2021

Extended.

Adam Schefter of BSPN says the Bucs extended park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

That’s great. But here is where it gets cloudy for Joe. Joe is not a capologist and the NFL uses a form of the King’s English that is foreign to Joe when it comes to contracts. Schefter claims Brady signed a four-year contract extension. The creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, says that locks Brady in for one more year through 2022.

Joe will provide the links and copy to both Schefter and Florio. The NFL accountants out there can figure out the NFL language.

All Joe knows is Brady is here and he has given the Bucs some relief on the salary cap.

From Pro Football Talk:

Brady, who initially signed a two-year contract last year, has agreed to a one-year extension, according to multiple reports.

The Bucs and Brady are now contractually linked through the 2022 season.

This appears to Joe to be a brand new contract for five years including 2021, and the Bucs have an out after the 2022 season. The final three years on paper are not guaranteed, but Brady’s current signing bonus, whatever that is, would be spread into 2023, 2024, 2025 salary cap spreadsheets.

Not to be lost is that Schefter claims this saved the Bucs some $19 million this year of cap space. Hello Shaq?

Shaq is back. We’re gonna make another run. The Chiefs are getting weaker

  2. ModHairKen Says:

Good week. Now get Shaq signed.

  3. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

I’ve been chasing this story around the interwebs for the last 10 minutes or so…I can’t find a cap relief amount yet. Hopefully enough to sign Shaq…

  4. timbucs2 Says:

I foresee Shaq AND Suh both getting signed with that $$ freed up

  5. Bird Says:

Its same as lavonte joe. Lavonte deal only for technically 2 years but has 3 void years in it to spread out money.

Brady just did same thing basically so his cap hit may only be like 5-10 this year instead of 25 and gets spread out. We got shaq money available now.

And we got one more year after this for the farm animal as you call him

    How awesome is this!
    💥

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Sounds like the Bucs just did with Brady what the Saints did with Brees … free up a bunch of salary CAP in 2021 and spread it out over several future years. To me, that translates to ‘The future is NOW’. We’re going for the roses again in 2021. The future may get ugly, but hey, we’ll worry about that later.

  7. Coburn Says:

Is Shaq really back? I hope so, but still need money for rookies and operating expenses even if we let Suh, Roches, Gronk, ab all walk. Also need to fill out rest of team

  8. Buczilla Says:

Hell yeah. I know that Brady has made his money, but this makes Licht’s job one hell of a lot easier. Can you imagine being a cowboys fan?

  9. Eric Says:

Word is it saves $19 million in cap
Space for this year! Reports Schefter

  10. Joe Says:

    Its same as lavonte joe.

Kinda what Joe thought: Lavonte contract.

    Thanks for reinforcing that. 🙂

  11. Buc50 Says:

Just as important is the Saints getting weaker. This is great news for the Bucs.

  12. Cobraboy Says:

    BOOM!

Welcome back Mr. Barrett, and maybe others…

Maybe the reason for the Shaq negotiating silence was after agreeing to a number in principle, the Bucs needed to do some contract majik.

PLUS: Buc fans get two more Brady years.

    Happy Happy Joy Joy!

  13. Robert Says:

    still let Shaq walk

  14. timbucs2 Says:

Can they do the same with Donny Smith and Jensen, with their huge cap hits this year? I say extend them and we can get some more depth at CB and RB in free agency!

    GOING FOR TWO!

  15. Adrnagy Says:

You give Brady what he wants. Security and comfort. And weapons. !

Offense first .. when you have Brady. David was signed because is the heart.

Now the priority is acouple more contracts. And sign aB , gronk , suh.
No shaq , until he lowers his value. And that can be happening when the market opens. But I’m hearing colts and cards are all in on shaq.

  16. unbelievable Says:

    LFG baby!

  17. Cainishere Says:

Hey with the money saved from Brady you could sign all that you need but not Shaq. He still costs too much money. All the rest can be signed and a rookie put in his place. I say go see what you can get Shaq and good luck to you buddy.

  18. Cobraboy Says:

The best news, IMO, Shaq & Co. aside, is Buc fans get at least two more seasons to witness QBing excellence.

BTW: I doubt Brady “checks his sheets.”

The downside, will there ever be a post-Bray QB that can live up to his standards. Will his excellence spoil fans forever?

  19. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Me thinks me and Joe ’bout to get our guzzle on!!

  20. mark2001 Says:

Defense…true. And hopefully after a couple years from now, we will have a talented young QB on his rookie contract.

  21. Jerry Says:

Cap will be very ugly in a few years.

  22. Adrnagy Says:

With shaq .. Bucs are tapping his doorstep. The issue is shaq demand
    .. $20-$25 m yr. he wants a big fat upfront dump $40m-$50m.
Licht is not swallowing that .. he’s playing the waiting game.

    Brady helps with the cap
    David helps with the cap
    Gronk will
    AB will
    Evans will

    Shaq wants their $$$$$$

  23. Joe Says:

I doubt Brady “checks his sheets.”

Brady checks his fingers. Hope he runs out with the Bucs. 🙂

  24. ClodHopper Says:

Oh yeah. Great offseason so far!

  25. Mitch Says:

Good start. Bucs will need a few more of these kind of extensions/restructures to be able to sign everyone they want back.

  26. Cannon Says:

    #TheFutureIsNowOldMan…

  27. August 1976 Buc Says:

Welcome back Shaq, Super Bowl express is moving along rather nicely. GO BUCS!!!!

  28. buc15 Says:

    BACK TO BACK TO BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS – HOW YOU LIKE THAT REALIST?

  29. Bird Says:

Thank you tom brady and LVD too!

Lets get the band back together
Guys will fall in line. Their 2 leaders just said play ball …tampa is home…2 year window for 2 more.

Dude gronk will play for much less after his boys move 5-7 mil cheapy
Suh will sign 2 years 13 -15 mil …5 this year and 8-10 next

Lets get the champ champ back

Chiefs let both tackles go. Like the sound of that. We can beat anyone. Saints are kicking can further then anyone has before in history of nfl and they still have not made decision on qb. Even if winston …he will not play for 1.1 again. Would need to be 10 plus meaning another stud or 2 being cut. If they get qb in draft , then welcome to tampa rookie. We got green bay’s number. Bills dont scare me. Who else wants to take our title?

  30. Cobraboy Says:

With Brady back for a minimum of two more years, I suspect Some current OL will also get extensions to match his.

  31. Soggy Says:

Got to like that Brady guy..

  32. youngbucs Says:

    🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐Take that haters!!!!!

  33. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Restructure Smith & Jensen. Dump Fournett and trade OJ. Sign Gronk to 2 year deal, he finishes out with TB12. AB will come in about 4-5mil, these are two huge pieces to offense. I would trade Evan’s before I dump Gronk & AB. Brady has done this over the years with Patriots and they never used the cap space to support him. Bucs are legit, Pat’s not so much.

  34. Tuddy Time Says:

Getting the band back together! This team is set to do something special! Baring injuries, this Brady led team can go undefeated setting single season scoring records! I still have to pinch myself saying that the GOAT is our QB as well as one of the greatest TEs of all time are Bucs! Great to live I. Tampa Bay!

  35. D1 Says:

    Adnagy,

You an agent, Jason licht, a glazer, in the upper mgt, of the team?

Just wondering how you know what Shaq wants and what’s holding up the deal.

Could be that your completely fos , could it? Nah!

  36. Adrnagy Says:

    @LISTNFRMAFAR

It’s not the pats are not legit. Bill just got obsess with defense players and running the ball. instead of providing weapons to Brady.

Now in days is about #1 offense , weapons , yards , TD. Defense comes second.

  37. Todd Says:

    The way Brady’s brain works.

“Once I have 8 rings, I will feel like I failed because 10 rings are within reach.”

He plays until he gets 10 rings.

Then and only then does he hang up the jock strap.

  38. August 1976 Buc Says:

KC found out it is about more than #1 offense they have, and the best young QB the NFL has ever seen. The Bucs Defensive front 7 caused the first beatdown of the Mahomes era in KC. The Bucs only needed 10 points to beat them. GO BUCS!!!!

  39. Game film doesn't lie Says:

Now let’s sign Shaq but not over pay. Offer long term deal but not 20mil per. Everyone else is doing team friendly deals wouldn’t be fair to give Shaq over premium$.

15-18mil avg over 4 or 5 years Seems about right.
Then need to sign Gronk, Suh, Succop in that order..then see what’s left for AB..
    Imo

  40. Cainishere Says:

    @LISTNFRMAFAR
You can tell that you have no idea who Mike Evans is or what he means to the Buccaneers. Mike is family in Tampa Bay. You do not trade away a player who has sacrificed as much as he has for this team. Stick to your Patriots where devotion goes to die. GO BUCS!!!!

  41. SOEbuc Says:

Okay so that’s wrapped up. Let’s get on the subject of other player contract restructure. Have they just been so busy with Brady they haven’t been dealing with others. Evans,Ali,Brate,Brady, Donovan. Definitely still need some more space.

I will continue to disagree with resigning Shaq for $20/yr cus I’m thinking dollars in the future. Would be awesome to have him back year two, but he’s not some Khalil Mack or Lavonte David type for that matter that can switch into different schemes and crappy teams and still dominate.

  42. RioDeJaneiroBucsFan Says:

    Great news!!!!
Not just for cap reasons, keeping Brady for one more season is amazing
As I told you several times here, Brazilian friendly, easy going girls don’t pester their husbands, they are educated to do the smart thing and let them have fun. No way Giselle would be bitchy for no good reason
And I don’t think that the Bucs will do this kind of contract with others players. It would be harmful in the long term. JL and Greenberg don’t like dead money, this movements are ok specifically for this season on limited basis
Sign Shaq, Succop and Gronk right now. Suh and Brown will have to wait till Big Mike and Marpet restructure their contracts. I’m still not sure about Playoff Lenny’s situation

  43. AJ Says:

That’s a wrap!!! Shaq best tell Brady thank you sir!!

  44. Shecky Says:

We may have to get real about Shaq. If he’s going for all he can get, fine; absolutely understand that. But is it wise to pay a 30 year-old DE $20M a season for years to come after coming off just an 8 sack season? And what if there was an understanding that Brady’s restructuring was contingent on Tampa bringing back his boys, Gronk and AB? I think I’d challenge Shaq to test the market and see if other teams believe he’s worth what he thinks he is. First off there aren’t many teams with the cap space to afford him and most are total rebuilds. With his age in mind Shaq may find his market tops out at $15-$16M per.

  45. Casual Observer Says:

Great news. Now we’ll see about Shaq. He may prove to be too costly. If he leaves, that almost assures that the rest of the band is back. If he stays, probably not the case.

  46. Beeej Says:

    From BSPN, a good summation:

“The drawbacks to doing voidable years, however, mean that they’ll essentially be borrowing from the future. But they recognize that Brady’s window is a small one, even with an extra year on what was originally a two-year contract.”

I’m good with some crap years in the not-too-distant future so we can stay on top for another year or two, it’s not like we aren’t used to it

  47. Nick2 Says:

Yes awesome news so the Bucs did with Brady as the Saints did with Breez as Defense Rules Says said but the difference is they were chasing a Super Bowl we just WON ONE. We are not banking on hopes we are banking on certainties like the Bucs are the best team in the NFL and now will stay that way. This is so great. Yes we will rebuild in a few years when Tom retires but we are going to nail down some more championships before its all said and done. Back to back baby!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe we even keep Playoff Lenny who knows that would be too much to ask for maybe but I am loving it right now.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

    3peat?

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Plenty of places for rings for Brady……one more for the fingers (forget thumbs, that’s tacky)…..one for the nose….two for the nip@le$….and one for the navel….then he can start working on his toes.

  50. Durango 95 Says:

The year of “The sickness” has evolved in to a fresh season of voidable contract years. It’s all the rage, in fact, all the kids are doing it.

  51. Shecky Says:

    C’mon man, 3 peat?
The entire country witnessed where all that confidence and bravado got the dynasty-waiting-to-happen Chiefs last season. Looking like idiots.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

Shecky…all or most of Brady’s weapons are coming back.

I predict this team only gets better next season. D and O.

I’m willing to take one game at a time of course, gotta get the next one to start talking 3peat. I also don’t think Brady’s going away after the next SB win. Hence the talk of a 3peat.

    Go Bucs!!!

  53. BucsfanChad Says:

Here is what I would like to see next. Trade our 2nd and 6th round picks to Baltimore for Orlando Brown, and release Donovan Smith. Instant upgrade at LT and would save a nice chunk of change.

  54. DarenGibo Says:

TRADE Evans???? that some crazy S right there! WOW. that crazy speak just ended this thread for me.

  55. David Says:

Idiots talking about trading D Smith ! 😂
    Whatever.
    Next steps-
    -Sign Minter, Gronk, Suh, Succop
-Restructure/extend D Smith to save even more cap space
-Sign Shaq to a 4-6 year deal

  56. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Cainishere, it’s called winning, this is not high school where you start a player because his father is a booster or simply because he is a good kid. Not everyone gets the trophey. If you don’t believe if you had to trade Evan’s to keep AB & Gronk isn’t a winning formula you obviously DO NOT know football. What will this team look like in 3 years with all these players gone? I like Evan’s but he was far from a standout in the PO’s and SB.

Anargry, Belichick is paying stupid $ on special team players. He is a great coach but horrible GM. Josh McDaniels was all over Lamar Jackson but instead of listing to his SB winning offensive coordinator he listen to a coaching buddy and drafted Sony Michel and did the same thing and drafted Nkeal Harry over DK Metcalf. Horrible choices.

  57. Joe in Michigan Says:

Nice, $19 million in cap space created! The plan is coming together! LFG! 🏴‍☠️

  58. David Says:

    LISTNFRMAFAR

Actually uttered the phrase “trade Evans”

Can we ban him now? Please? He just brought the comprehensive football IQ down dramatically.

  59. crazybucs_CL Says:

    we love you TB12…

  60. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Not nice David. All I’m saying is if sacrifices need to be made you got to least productive not good samaritans.

  61. Cainishere Says:

We need to sacrifice you LISTNFRMAFAR cuz you suck buddy

  62. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Cainishere, sorry if I hurt your feelings, it is apparent you have a man crush for Evan’s. Sorry bud I think he is a great talented team player but if freeing up cap space is what this team needs to do, trading him is the obvious choice. To be honest now that he has restructured this may be a mute point.

  63. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Wow, trade Evans who had another 1000 yard season and caught 13 tds to lead the entire team and is a great team player without being a Mr Me Me Me! It’s got nothing about having a man crush but being sensible. You don’t get rid of your best to pick up someone else’s maybe. More than likely it will take 2 receivers to make up those 13 tds
