Smoke Signals Suggest Shaq Barrett Could Return

March 15th, 2021

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Specifically starting at noon today, a whole bunch of NFL general managers will be holding a rose, willing to hand them to a hot babe free agent to join him in a bedroom romp quest to win a Super Bowl.

Heavy metal headbanging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is playing matchmaker. And he believes he has 13 perfect fits between free agents and a suitor of an NFL team.

For Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, La Canfora says Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett would make a great football marriage.

Because he already has.

La Canfora is not just throwing darts against the wall. He sees signs that Licht can and will lock up Shaq this week as the Bucs “Go for two.”

OLB Shaq Barrett – Buccaneers
I don’t think the Bucs do the Lavonte David deal – and Lavonte does the deal – without them having an idea that they can keep this stud pass rusher. I don’t think the Bucs put the tag on Chris Godwin, and not Barrett, if they don’t feel good about their ability to retain this difference-making talent. Tom Brady is redoing his deal specifically with this kind of transaction in mind. This is a great defense, and the defense just won the Super Bowl for them with a 43-year old QB, and he is arguably the most important player on that defense, so I am going to assume that GM Jason Licht is going to continue his hot streak.

That’s a helluva point by La Canfora. Does Lavonte David re-sign — and Tom Brady work a new contract — if Licht doesn’t tell them he is confident Shaq returns?

Remember how Shaq responded to Brady’s social media post of his new contract on Friday?

The Joe who is beside himself Shaq wasn’t franchised wondered aloud on “The Ira Kaufman Podcast” that Licht did not franchise Shaq because Licht and Shaq’s agent, oily Drew Rosenhaus, are much closer to reaching an agreement than Licht was/is with Godwin’s agent, and that’s why Licht tagged Godwin.

    Yeah baby!!!

More hope delivered by this website.

    Touchdown Tompa Bay!!!!!

  2. Allbuccedup Says:

If he can get Shaq to sign for 15 to 17 mil a year we got him
If he wants more he leaves. Simple as that!

  3. doolnutts Says:

I love Shaq but his agent is doing the right thing by letting him test the market out. Who knows does a bad team offer some kind of crazy earth-shattering deal? Maybe. But if we are close I think Shaq will return.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m not sure the LVD deal & the Brady extension are related to Shaq.

We needed LVD no matter what we did….especially if Shaq leaves.

We needed a restructure from Brady for the general cap pool for other players….

  5. Robert Says:

15-17 like said before. Part of me wants him to walk……even if it’s just to makes joe’s head explode. Lol

8 sacks is not elite and he is replaceable cheaper. Much cheaper.

  6. Demetrios Says:

The David deal guarantees they have the Shaq situation under control. He’s going nowhere!!!

  7. Steven007 Says:

I’m not against signing Shaq like some are. But I am against signing him to a prohibitively expensive deal. Really needs to be some give on both sides in my opinion. Would love to see a number between 17 and 19. 2 years ago no one knew this guy’s name. Now he’s the only way we can win another Super bowl? Just not buying that. Very good player. But his pedigree suggests he’s closer to Lawrence than he is to Simeon Rice.

Some of you that think he’s going to sign for like 15 million a year are fantastically delusional. Shaq is going to resign, but I have feeling some of you will try to piss on a good day by whining and complaining that he’s getting like 20 million a year, how dare the man primarily responsible for the most QB pressures in the playoffs get paid his market value!

  9. zzbuc Says:

I would love to see Shaq back…..but at the right price…..We are champions on overpaying, and we perfectly know what the consequences are….If let´s say the Jaguars come in with crazy money ( 19mm +) you just dont match and let him walk….No doubt he will be dearly mimssed, but that´s reality……We can´t motrgage the franchise….Sooner or later we need to understand this….We need to resign Gronk, and Sucoop too, also need to sign the rookie deals….There is no monet for everybody……Don´t get me wrong, I LOVE Shaq, and I would love him to be back…..But do not overpay….Let some other overpay…

  10. Cobraboy Says:

If Barrett is worth $20 mil, what is JPP worth?

    IMO, JPP > Shaq

  11. Tc Says:

It’s probably gonna take 5 years at close to 22 per…… That’s a lot of lettuce.

  12. geno711 Says:

Why are fans limiting Shaq’s worth to one statistic of 8 sacks last year?
If you look at his two year totals of Sacks, TFL, QB pressures, QB hits.
He is top 5. How is that replaceable?
+ he is better in run support than these other edge rushers that are free agents.

Who cares if the Glazers pay a little more or we suck up a bad salary cap situation in 4 years. I want guys who in the playoffs played their best ball who we know fit on this team.

  13. buc15 Says:

    I agree CobraBoy

  14. SlyPirate Says:

If we lose Shaq, it’ll sting. It will be worse if we sign Shaq for so much that we lose our ability to compete.

  15. TOM Says:

No more than 17 mil 3yrs. To many other options out there. A beast in the playoffs but just average regular season.

  16. TOM Says:

Forgot to mention Gronk, Suh & Succup more important to sign.

  17. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Shaq is currently the top rated player to be had in Free Agency, that is not Tagged.
Several teams have need of a pass rusher, with a lot more money than we have.
Namely Cleveland, who have expressed interest in him, and have a ton more money than we do.
I am with one of the Joe’s here. I would have used the Tag on Shaq instead of Godwin.
