Rob Gronkowski Signs With Bucs

March 15th, 2021

Back in red (and pewter).

It seems Bucs tight end Rob Gronkowski wanted to keep dipping his toes in the Hillsborough River.

The Bucs’ foot-rubbing, car-littering future Hall of Fame tight end, just hours after telling Kyle Brandt of NFL Network that he was a free agent and other teams were calling him, signed with the Bucs, per his agent oily Drew Rosenhaus via BSPN’s Adam Schefter.

Maybe it is just Joe, but Gronk got better and better as the season grew longer and he saved his best ball for the playoffs and the Super Bowl, sort of like another client of Rosenhaus, Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett. Perhaps that’s why he got a 10-percent-plus raise to $10 million including incentives for 2021.

Next up: Re-signing kicker Ryan Succop and defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh.

  1. DarenGibo Says:

LFG!! Really wanted Gronk back if not for the selfish reason that we raise mini donkeys and the next one born is to be named Gronky the Donkey! It is obvious that we saved Brady for the name of one of our GOATS!

  2. Mike10 Says:

    Now let’s go get Suh!

  3. David Says:

Shaq cap hit 6 mil? Wow.
    Gronk is 8?

That should leave enough for Succop.

Probably need to restructure Smith and/or Evans to get a couple others signed and then the draft picks.

  4. Bucsfan101 Says:

    GO BUCS

  5. Coburn Says:

More than I was hoping he’d sign for, but that’s not to say he hasn’t earned it. Blocking de one on one and being such a good red zone target. Just makes it difficult to fill out rest of roster, and sign Suh/nacho (at least one is gone, just depends on price). More restructures coming. The poster who said they were probably trying to do multi hear conttacy could be dead on

  6. ocala Says:

Sign Godwin to a long term deal and free up some more space.

  7. Chuckstutz Says:

Thank goodness! Would not have been the same without him!special dude!

  8. Allbuccedup Says:

Gronk signing great but where is all the money coming from? I guess we will be signing Suh for the same, the salary cap is a joke. Just like the guy from NFL total access said. But then again whatever works.

  9. DaBux Says:

    Just OMG.

    Their boats suck.

    Our boat will sink.

No way can any other team top this past season’s boat parade.

    Except our team.

    #LFG!!!!!

  10. Bird Says:

Gronk took year off and jumped off his party bus and announcer couch in a covid year
He was not in football shape

Remember he commented he was there to block early on as getting no looks
He didnt have football legs for some time
No reason his numbers cant be better

He is a stud. Its 8 year with incentives so all good.

Brate or oj (trade) probably gone

  11. Aceofaerospace Says:

    I’m really sporting now.

  12. JV Says:

    LFG!!

  13. mark2001 Says:

Joe..I think he did get better as the season went on. After being out of football for a year, it took him a while to get back up to speed. I expect him to pretty much pick up where he left off the end of last year.

  14. Gbobucsfan Says:

Pretty sure this puts us over the cap….still like the move though.

  15. Wesley Says:

I like him returning, but paid him WAY too much.

  16. Bird Says:

Geez. Look at all the sour pusses

All teams are doing maneuvers cause of covid last year and cap way down
We can do this for this special occasion
Bucs normally make smart deals with greenberg. So they will have some dead cap. This will not become the norm

We had like over 100 mil in space next year.
    Chill people.

  17. mark2001 Says:

Yeah…Suh, Succop, and Brown next. I think we will get a RB as well. Fournette would be fine…but there will be cheaper guys out there that I think can get the job done.

  18. Dirtyduvalmike Says:

Just spent 2s researching this, but if we win the super bowl next year rob gronkowski will be tied for 2nd all time in super bowl victories by a player behind Tom Brady and tied with Charles haley.

  19. CalBucsFan Says:

Hey Joe, so what is the payroll total now with the Gronk signing, aren’t they over the cap or can a team go over the cap temporarily while they are finalizing multiple contracts?

  20. Alstott up the gut Says:

Yes!!! Already one of my favorite all time Bucs after one year! Still a passing mismatch for defenses, under appreciated blocker, and perfect for the locker room. I’ll have his jersey ASAP! Go Bucs!

  21. Bucthis Says:

The hate to say it, but Cam Brate is gone !!

  22. Snook Says:

The obsession with Succop… Calm down. You can’t give a kicker a big deal. They’re all head cases eventually.

  23. Joe Says:

    Cal:

This is a very good site to answer your questions.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tampa-bay-buccaneers/cap/

  24. Waterboy Says:

Glad he’s back but I didn’t see Gronk getting 10 mil. this year. I was thinking he’d get about 7 mil.

  25. Joe Says:

The obsession with Succop… Calm down. You can’t give a kicker a big deal. They’re all head cases eventually.

Either, A., you haven’t seen Bucs kickers since 2014; or B., you never heard the name “Roberto Aguayo.”

  26. Winny Testaverde Says:

Gronk’s lil’ bluff worked…getting paid top dollar. I notice his agent is the oily one…he made a lot of Glazer loot today.

  27. Jerry Says:

We are going all in this year to try and run it back. You don’t get many opportunities to try to win two in a row. And hasn’t been done since 2004. So we are overspending. We will likely have a bad cap year in a few years to pay for it. But we will likely be in a rebuilding phase at that point anyway.

But Gronk was an important blocker in the run game. Fournette and Jones would not have been quite as good without him. And he was CRITICAL in the Super Bowl because the Chiefs pretty much neutralized Evans and Godwin. So our TEs needed to step up, and Gronk did.

  28. RobK Says:

His contact has voidable years so his cap hit will be 4 million

  29. mark2001 Says:

4 mill left…and we haven’t even touched any of those big cap guys, that would most certainly restructure their contracts. Looks like the band is getting back together.

  30. adam from ny Says:

i said it before and i’ll say it again…

if they win it all again next year, just throw the darn trophy in the river and be like:

    “what, what…we’re going for 3”

    #ThatHowBadMofosMove

  31. ModHairKen Says:

    The 24-7 Champ is back!

    Now pay Suh!

  32. BA4President Says:

Succup is a must. The fact that he was flawless in the postseason can’t be taken for granted.

Anyone who overlooks the kicker position will be the same one that is mad as hell when we lose a game due to a missed FG or XP

  33. Jeffbuc Says:

Well we should be about done with cap now. So unless we see a restructure a release or trade it will be wait and see

  34. Serge Says:

It’s 8 million and 2 million in incentives I believe

  35. mark2001 Says:

The strategy seems pretty clear. Restructure as many as you need to, to get the band back together, with the understanding that every guy signing will sign a cap friendly contract. And restructure the guys you need to make cap space to sign these guys and your draft picks, and any great back up talent.

Yes, the piper will eventually be paid. But as Adam said, during the rebuilding phase, when you lose guys but get comp picks.

I like it. One or two more SB’s is worth misery for a few years.

  36. windbaggery Says:

I see an OJ Howard trade coming.

  37. DaBux Says:

Well we should be about done with cap now. So unless we see a restructure a release or trade it will be wait and see

Now that the first wave is done, look for more restructuring like Donovan Smith, Brate, Gholston, and Evans to get more money longer term then freeing up more money.

    Let’s win now.

And I am good with that.

  38. Adrnagy Says:

Yes yes yes. Imo. We keep oj and brate. Love gronk. -$1.2 m cap space. Next is suh. succop. A. Peterson.

    Suh cannot sign until Wednesday.

  39. Gettinthebucs Says:

I’m still sitting here basking in the greatness of the Superbowl. I can’t believe the progress this organization has made in such a short amount of time. We’ve got at a minimum 4 HOF players on the roster and several others that are moving in the same direction. Of all the great players and coaches that have come through here, Tom Brady is the best thing to ever happen to the Bucs. I honestly doubted Arians, Licht, Brady and many others before last season happened. Fast forward to today and I’m just amazed at how well this organization has been run the last year. I still wish Jameis the best but it’s obvious this was the best move for both sides.

  40. Bobby M. Says:

Glad to have Gronk back….would like to have Suh as well but i do believe we can get by with Gholston and #56 if needed. Vea is the factor that makes everything work on that front seven.

  41. SlyPirate Says:

Gronk and Shaq are both represented by Rosenhaus?

They should just give Drew an office at One Buc.

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We should extend D. Smith & JPP. & Jensen…..save more 21 cap space……do a long-term deal with Godwin for more

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m starting to believe (in amazement) that we are going to get this done…

  44. Buczilla Says:

    Woot!

  45. Kobe Faker Says:

    “$10 mill?

Why not $5 mill and help out and bring back everyone?

    Losing Playoff lenny is devastating”

  46. Buxszntkt Says:

LOL, thanks for the link to spotrac Joe ! Friggin hilarious looking at the players salaries !!! TB 1MM, LVD 1MM, Gronk 4 MM, have to convert ME to a 1MM and squeeze some others to get 2 years maxed out for Brady.

  47. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Glad he is back! Remember, he scored 2 of our 3td’s in Super Bowl.

  48. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Suh! Suh! Suh! Suh!

  49. MadMax Says:

Succop and Suh next and we’re in bidness!!!

  50. crazyBucs_CL Says:

    @Joe
“….Either, A., you haven’t seen Bucs kickers since 2014; or B., you never heard the name “Roberto Aguayo.”
    ________________________
…so true. Absolutely Succop should be next. I know that pass performance is not guarantee for future one, but is been a loooong time since we have had a decent kicker…
Super happy for Gronk, next Succop….

  51. DoooshLaRue Says:

This is like finding out you have cancer and then the doctor saying…. hey we made a mistake…….

……and then winning the freaking lottery!

  52. Adrnagy Says:

Lol … 5yr contract. Who comes up with this stuff.

  53. MadMax Says:

Sorry, but cut OJ and draft baby Gronk…Freiermuth at #32.

  54. MadMax Says:

WHAT UP LUV? Where you been brotha?

  55. Bucs Guy Says:

Way overpaid – Jason Licht was due to screw up somewhere.
Not worth more than $6M max.

  56. crazyBucs_CL Says:

worth every penny… on and out field…

  57. DaBux Says:

    Pinch me.

  58. Kentucky Buc Says:

If the rumors are true these contracts are going to look super cheap when the new TV deal comes out and the cap explodes the next 2 years.

  59. Kentucky Buc Says:

Oh and how about Suh next please.

  60. mark2001 Says:

Yeah Joe…we missed enough kicks in the last decade for a life time…before Succop.

  61. mark2001 Says:

Basically heard that too, Kentucky. But the bottom line is that SB’s don’t come around very often…unless you are Tom Brady. So make hay while we can make another run or two. We will cross that future bridge when it comes.

Brady made this team better and is helping the organization sign these guys in so many ways. We are very fortunate. And Licht and Arians, as well as Bowles deserve a ton of credit for getting him on board, and building this team.

  62. lambchop Says:

Gronk is selling NFTs so the dude is not hurtin for cash. He sold 348 NFTs in a day for more than 1.2M. Crazy.

  63. 123urout Says:

Man! i haven’t worn my superbowl 55 jersey yet and now, i have to put an order for superbowl 56 champions bucs jersey… can’t complain… lets go BUCS !!!😀😀💪😁

  64. Jerry Says:

So who’s left of the Big 8?
    Suh
    Succup
    AB
    Fournette

    It is getting tight now.

We are likely going to lose Fournette unless he doesn’t get much attention on the open market. AB I think will come back for cheap. That looming trial in December will hold down his market value big time. Suh may need to take a paycut to come back. If Succup is looking for top kicker pay, we may need to move on.

Remember, we need 7-10 mil for the rookies, and at least another 5+ to fill out the roster.

We could still find some cap space by playing with some contracts (ie: Donovan Smith). But we are starting to get tight.

  65. Youngbucs Says:

Joe is it true we signed James white

  66. mark2001 Says:

Jerry… Joe gave us Spotrac, which is pretty good. And if you look at that, you will see that there are about 7 or 8 contracts that likely could be redone, not including removing the franchise tag with a long term contract.

So don’t worry…we can get there. The question is, will the band keep working together to the last “player” to keep the team from really approaching proverbial “cap hell”, and continue to give us a “hometown discount”. To be responsible we still can’t overpay for anyone. That would break the Fellowship of the SB ring.

I think that is what we should call this team… The Fellowship of the SB ring.

  67. Topdoggie Says:

    What is a NFT lambchop?

  68. mark2001 Says:

Doggie..some kind of digital trading card, as I understand it.

  69. Lokog Says:

In madden I signed every body could’ve signed Gerald to but he wanted more n I wouldn’t give him more

  70. Darin Says:

You better believe when Brady restructured to help the team out he allocated for the kicker. Suh and Succop will get done.

  71. David Says:

I say let’s get Brate out of there, let Suh walk and restructure Evans contract ASAP. We need A.B back to keep our receiving corps so insanely good. Add speedster OJ Howard to that mix and who do u block? No seriously. Good luck .We can draft a replacement for older guys like Suh and Brate

  72. Adrnagy Says:

NFT stands for non-fungible token and is essentially a certificate of authenticity for a one-of-a-kind digital memorabilia that can’t be duplicated. The memorabilia is stored on a blockchain network.

  73. Bird Says:

Bucs are again using voidable years on the Gronkowski contract — it’s a one-year deal with four voidable years, so his cap hit is $4.8 million — $4 million base salary, $4 million bonus pro-rated for cap over five seasons.

  74. Buxszntkt Says:

That NFT is a new crazy worthless bit of nonsense. Dorsey of Twitter sold the rights to his first tweet for 2.5MM ! WTF, I guess collectors think this crap will appreciate in value. Not sure , does this crap forever reside on the internet so you can show off your collection on you computer monitor ? Crazy ,

Yes yes yes. Imo. We keep oj and brate. Love gronk. -$1.2 m cap space. Next is suh. succop. A. Peterson.

Peterson? For vet minimum, maybe. Why would a 35 year old RB be a priority?

    Suh cannot sign until Wednesday.

None of them can sign until Wednesday. Anything reported as a “signing” between 4pm today and Wednesday is only a verbal agreement.

I think Shaq’s agreement came down before 4PM today, not sure about Gronk’s.

  77. SOEbuc Says:

Evans and Brate will restructure. I would hope Smith has to restructure for him to stay on this team. Trade 32 for picks and look for OT or C round three.

  78. ItzOK Says:

4 down 3 to go. Id be happy if we get 2 but I mostly want Suh back

  79. Blue Coffee Says:

JOE SAID: The obsession with Succop… Calm down. You can’t give a kicker a big deal. They’re all head cases eventually.

Either, A., you haven’t seen Bucs kickers since 2014; or B., you never heard the name “Roberto Aguayo.”

Your are again and always right Joe! Ho yes I do remember! In what? 2015, 2016? Anaway, Aguayo missed FG like crazy. He had a success on what 65% of FG?!! The damn dude never had a FG over 45 yards! NEVER! Or I was sleeping on one game for sure if he had one because I have not seen one.
Succop had ALL his FG in the playoffs! In SB he got a 52 yards! Wow! Beautiful, marverlous, I was so anxious I was up on my toes, but Succop had it!
I swear, if we lost Succop I will get a stomach ulcer again next year,…
The guy is crutial for god sake! At least for my stomach,..

My love for my BUCS is sometimes just too much said my wife,… Well, I am now the happiest man on earth, because we are champions!

Succop, Suh, AB,… and go for a second.
    GO BUCS!

  80. Blue Coffee Says:

Ha, ha. Sorry JOE the copy give a inverse signification of what you said:
JOE SAID the answer about the kicker:

Either, A., you haven’t seen Bucs kickers since 2014; or B., you never heard the name “Roberto Aguayo.”

    My apologies.
    GO BUCS!

  81. Tom Sumner Says:

    8..9..10!!!! LFG TB12!!!!!!!

  82. Mike Says:

I am surprised that people undervalue Gronk. Evans, Goldwin are 1A, but Gronk and AB are certainly 1B to the SB won last year. Without Gronk, the Bucs could not win the SB.

  83. Swampbuc Says:

Even after a super bowl win, Warren Sapp’s immortal words ring true – Bucs fans are the dumbest fans in the NFL. All these know it all GMs wanting to cut OJ Howard, cut or trade Brate, calling Shaq a potbelly, saying Gronk’s not worth it, etc.

Meanwhile, Jason Licht knows wtf he is doing and 8s delivering on the objective — keep the band together. All you wannabe ninnies, thank your personal god you’re not the GM. As has been mentioned, the salary cap is crimped for 2021 but will significantly escalate beyond that between the new tv contracts and fans returning to the stadiums.

Stop taking your moron pills people.

  84. TheShaz Says:

I would have never guessed that we would be able to keep as many as we signed.

    Cheers to Jason

The Brady effect is in full swing.

Imagine how good we can be with a full off-season.

  85. Rod Munch Says:

    Glad he’s back.

Sounds like the hangup, at least from the way I read things, the Bucs really really wanted him to do a 2-year deal, since that’s their window – and Gronk is pretty set on only doing a 1-year deal. Not sure how it would work next year if he wanted to play again, but it means at least some dead cap – but I don’t think it’s unworkable.

Except, according to some people, the cap next year might go down again. I was under the impression it would almost certainly increase, probably dramatically, but the NFL might have spread the reduced cap over multiple years so this year wouldn’t be lower than it is. If that’s the case, and the cap next year is down again like $15-20m, they’ll have to get creative again. But who cares, they should get it done.

  86. Jeagan1999 Says:

Gronk got better and better as a pass catcher as the year went on. He was a beast in the Superbowl, and his blocking was a big reason TB12 had time to throw and our running game flourished! Glad he is back!

  87. mark2001 Says:

Shaz… the thing is that even though some aforementioned sites have pay and salary cap data, what it can’t project is the willingness of players to restructure and change the face of the cap, and the organization to move money around and forward. I heard someone talk and say the Bucs actually had among the best cap space…because of the way their contracts were structured and such. Personally, I think the point is that most teams can find a way to sign someone they really want. But of course, that may cause a financial iceberg facing them in the future.

  88. BucsCoolade Says:

Yup.. we called that one. Great move. 1 year 10m. Doubled his cash up from 5m last year. Called that one too.

His other gigs were not so great. Playing football with brady is his refound life calling.. too bad he didnt play in bradys last year in NE. Oh well.. go gronk.

  89. Cainishere Says:

Having Gronk back does a few things to assist the team in a repeat. His gifted hands and excellent blocking capabilities shine and will protect Brady from extra hits to his body. Great job in the signing. I figured he would get the 10 million.
It is amazing where the Bucs are getting all of this money from to sign all of these guys. Financial wizards they are. GO BUCS!!!!!
