Improving At 43

March 28th, 2021

No decline.

Recently, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho said park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady has a few more years left because there are no signs of decline.

Joe also found an area of Brady’s game where there not only is no decline, but there was improvement. At 43 years old.

The gang over at FootballOutsiders.com has a good stat with a terrible name. “Failed completions.”

The name is inaccurate. A completed pass is not a failure. Never has been; never will be. However, what FootballOutsiders considers a failed completion should actually be referred to as a “failed conversion.”

A failed completion in their glossary is any completed pass that fails to gain 45% of needed yards on first down, 60% on second down, or 100% on third or fourth down.

Prior to last year, the Bucs had a quarterback who consistently had some of the best numbers in this category. His successor, Brady, joined the Bucs with a poor average with this stat, and that continued this year. Brady had a failed completion percentage of 23.2 percent. But that number in his first year with the Bucs, which placed him at No. 15 in the NFL in this stat, is actually an improvement.

In his last year playing for the Belicheats, 27.9 percent of Brady’s passes were failed completions, per Football Outsiders, or slightly less than a third of his completed passes.

So yes, an old dog can learn new tricks. And this is another piece of evidence that Acho is right on. There is no sign of decline for Brady as he prepares to turn 44 during training camp in August.

    Tommy will be fine.

……. until Durable Donnie gets him killed.

At some point age will matter. No-one knows when that point will come. I hope Brady has a couple more great years.

Hey joes by the way Brady could have easily thrown for 5000 or more yds! But we were in 4-5 minute offense more this season he didn’t have to. Also joes you guys have never done a piece on how the turnover differential changed this team. It’s ok to be honest about what actually took place real fans know the difference. And it wasn’t about ab Lenny or gronk!!!!!

I know what you mean Joe about the no such thing as a failed completion. It’s either complete or its not. There’s an analogous expression in the sea turtle world. About 50% of the time a turtle crawls out of the ocean to nest, it does not. It apparently doesn’t like the setting and simply returns to the ocean without laying eggs. Biologists scout the beaches each morning and examine each crawl mark they encounter on the beach and determine how many nests were made the previous night. They call crawls in which the turtle did not build a nest as “false crawls.” Makes me nuts! No, they’re not false crawls. They’re real crawls. The turtle just didn’t nest. And for the best non-sequitur of all times, GO BUCS!

He was playing better and better as the season went on. This team has a chance to be NFL history special.

@K2 wow did u come up with that all by yourself.

Personally I think that the “park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing” verbiage is getting old. I think the “Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback” is special though. Of course I’ve been referred to being a bit of a curmudgeon, myself.

If you give Tommy a little time with these weapons, he will simply carve you up. He did it last year and he’s going to do it this year. Tommy does not beat himself. For the 5 seasons prior to Tommy, we had a QB who beat himself all the time.

  12. G-FUNK Says:

Brady and the coaching staff were showing progress throughout the season. Brady was coached out of his comfort zone and because of that he had to improve or fail. He brought his “margin of error” mentality that helped his teammates perform more consistently. Offense should reach an even higher level next season, and with their defense should win their division.

OK when you are the Super Bowl winning quarterback you are the man. When you are the oldest SB champion with the most SB wins in history you are the GOAT. When you come back with all your starters You are dreaded by all other teams. The health of our team is important for next season. Stay healthy and no one stops us.

Brady will simply carve you up, and will not give away games. That is a very good nutshell -Mr AS Harper- of the last 6 years in Buccaneer land.
    GO BUCS!!!!!

Brady does what he needs to do to win. Some stats don’t tell the whole truth. In SB 55 he had three touchdowns at the half. Finished the game with three, could of had more but winning is always the most important stat.

  16. Ashley Devero Says:

Brady, is a coach, motivator, best defense reader ever, personnel evaluator, asst. GM, and leader of struggling players. When you get players to buy into their leaders resume you get expected results. In 2021 coach Brady will make sure Tampa Bay is competing at the highest level.
