Devin White Gets What Devin White Wants?

March 10th, 2021

Clout?

A popular saying among Bucs fandom is “Tommy gets what Tommy wants.”

This references the pull that park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady has in the organization.

If there is a quality player Brady knows andwants to help the Bucs win, by gosh the team goes out and gets him. You know, like foot-rubbing, car-littering tight end Rob Gronkowski, furniture-tossing, bicycle throwing receiver Antonio Brown and Playoff Lenny?

Bucs inside linebacker and longest-tenured Bucs player Lavonte David was asked to speak during a Bucs’ Super Bowl celebration.

Before he got a word out, Devin White, quite possibly the leader of the defense (which is saying a lot with guys like Ndamukong Suh and Jason Pierre-Paul on the roster) grabbed the microphone from David and began hollering that the Bucs needed to do whatever they have to do in order to bring David back home for another season with Tampa Bay.

Sure enough, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht swung a two-year guaranteed deal with David.

So does White have the same pull with Bucs suits as Brady? If so, Joe hopes White next implores Licht to lock up Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett before the free agency dinner bell rings on St. Patrick’s Day.

Licht looking after their own picks first…proper. Everything is gravy now. 2 main cogs are retained. Barrett has decision on money or love the game and his current team.

  2. Joe in Michigan Says:

I think it’s more of the facts that Lavonte is still good and a team leader. David was the Bucs player in the center of the field for the Super Bowl coin flip.

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Every Bucs fan is happy for LVD………..he’s been probowl snubbed and underrated for so long and finally has gotten his due………….it shouldn’t have taken a Superbowl or Devin White to make the football world realize how good LVD actually is.

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Tending to think that it’s more ‘Todd Bowles gets what Todd Bowles wants’.

A high-powered offense without a quality defense (Packers, Bills, Seahawks) can make the playoffs, but probably won’t win the championship. The reverse is also true though IMO; a high-performing defense (Rams, Steelers, Dolphins) can also get you to the playoffs, but probably won’t take home the Lombardi either. There has to be some semblance of BALANCE so that the offense & defense COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER. And the Bucs did that very very well in the playoffs.

BA & JL understand full well what it takes to build a championship TEAM. Bucs were very well balanced in 2020 IMO (#3 offense & #8 defense). Our defense is predicated on being great at defending the run AND pressuring the QB; without that we struggle.

Todd Bowles has built a defense that does that beautifully, and one that especially takes advantage of the unique skills of our Front-7 (or Front-6 as the case may be). LVD being re-signed was just the first installment. Next will come Suh & RNR is my guess. Whether or not Shaq returns depends on him, more-so than on the Bucs. But I still get the feeling that no changes will be made without Todd Bowles blessing.

  5. Leighroy Says:

LVD’s willingness to take 3 dead years on a 5 year deal and play for his signing bonus plus the veteran minimum salary for 2021 is the only reason “Devin White got what Devin White wants.”

The story should be about LVD sacrificing a blockbuster contract in the twilight of his career to stay in Tampa, not because White pulled a Kanye-Taylor Swift on stage at the celebration.

  6. Joe in Michigan Says:

Leighroy: A “Kanye-Taylor Swift” would’ve been if White took the mic and asked the Bucs to sign a DIFFERENT linebacker.

  7. Leighroy Says:

    😂 touché Joe in MI

  8. Bird Says:

Glad he has a chance to retire a buc

I know derrick brooks is the gold standard on our famous linebacker history
When its all said and done LVD numbers will look very similar to 55

Lvd more sacks to brooks more picks the only real difference
He will go into ring of honor

  9. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Yes the def backs played well in the last 3 games but do we really believe they have completely turned the corner? Without the entire front 7 those W’s don’t happen. A perfect example was the Washington game. Need to bring them all back. Tagging Godwin may have been a mistake.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our defense is strong because we are strong up the middle with Vea, White & Wifield…..it’s also strong because we have the fastest linebacker corps in the league.

Devin White has to be the happiest man on the Bucs this morning…..LVD is his partner and they will romp again.

  11. Bucanero Says:

quite an endorsement there from 45 to 54

  12. Ptwalk Says:

White is the one that spoke to Lenny about becoming a Buc not Brady.

  13. rrsrq Says:

Congrats and glad to have LVD back.
@Bruce B – so if Shaq leaves, that mean he doesn’t love the game because he chased the money, seriously, dude came in as an UDFA, then got a one year prove it contract, he did then was rewarded the franchise tag (all because of the beams he loves), the question is do the Bucs have enough money to show him some love when some other teams may set this guy up for generational wealth.

  14. Colonel_mp Says:

Take care of the men you drafted and molded before the men you purchased or picked up from afar. Seems to be a Glazer thing.

  15. Buczilla Says:

So happy to have David back.

  16. Anonymous Says:

Let Shaq Go. Vita Vea Is the reason Shaq ended it right. Shaq was quite until Vitas return even JOE has said it numerous times even tho now he jumps back from the truth as if he didn’t say it. Remember Joe How you said Shaq n JPP needs to wake up haven’t heard from them since hmmmm Minnesota game. Well neither showed up until the GB game and guess who came back that game VITA …..let SHAQ ass GOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  17. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    DR

Totally agree. Do we have the best offense in the NFL? It’s definitely arguable. Do we have the best defense in the NFL? It’s definitely arguable.

How many other teams can say that? Hint: None.

  18. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I really don’t care IF White is responsible, or not.
I am just happy to have LVD staying in Tampa.

  19. Oxycondoms Says:

Arians made a comment early on to the effect they want guys they can depend on who else better than david . Its what made me feel strongly about david returning

  20. Stanglassman Says:

Didn’t I read this headline in JBF comment section yesterday about DWhite gets what he wants regarding the LVD signing. Shoutout to whoever Joe cribbed.

  21. SlyPirate Says:

I agree with Defense Rules. Bowles is THE DECISION MAKER on defensive personnel.

We’ll likely see a lot of defense drafted this year. They’ll be selected based upon Bowles’ schemes.

  22. SOEbuc Says:

Another reason LVD should have been resigned with the possibility of losing 8Shaqs for $80M. We already know White ability to get to the QB and hawk across the field for a tackle, but not the greatest in coverage. LVD had highest LB coverage rating since 2016.
