Bruce Arians And Chris Godwin Are A Good Marriage

March 10th, 2021

Career and wealth on steep incline.

Yesterday, Bucs receiver Chris Godwin got one helluva raise.

When Bucs Super Bowl coach Bucco Bruce Arians took over in 2019, Godwin pocketed $667,000. That jumped to $2,130,000 this past season.

Now? Slapped with the franchise tag for 2021 yesterday, Godwin is expected to pull in a cool $16+ million if he doesn’t tear up the tag and sign another contract with the Bucs.

Pretty sweet raise, no? Joe thinks so.

Well, Godwin has more reasons than money to like playing for Arians.

Remember the day Arians was trotted out before the Bucs community? Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht said he would do everything in his power to bring back free agent slot receiver Adam Humphries.

Apparently, Licht was talked out of it by Arians. Why? Arians saw something in Godwin, who already had established himself as a dangerous receiver. Arians wanted speed at slot and figured Godwin would be about perfect with his speed and blocking ability,.

In other words, Arians envisioned Godwin being his new Hines Ward. And Godwin exploded, earning a Pro Bowl berth in 2019 and winning a Super Bowl ring and a hefty raise.

Godwin now lines up all over the place but roughly half the snaps at slot, where he has become one of the dominant slot players in the game.

Consider the NextGen stats below:

Not only has Godwin become one of the NFL’s best receivers under Arians playing at slot, he’s become a favorite target of park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

And oh yeah, a very rich young man.

Great to have LVD and Godwin back in the fold. Now, please, please, please Mr. Licht, sign Shaq.

  2. Chris Thomas from Heaven Says:

Godwin is going from making approx. 25k per game…to $1,000,000.00 million dollars per game. Amazing

  3. Bucthis Says:

@joebucsfan not sure this means anything, but Shaq and his family are back at their house in Tampa

And Hump is possibly out of football

I had no doubt BA knew how much he meant to this offense and would let him get away. Hopefully Tyler Johnson shows the same attributes CG has shown so the Bucs can afford to let CG go be a #1 elsewhere for if he chooses to next year. I believe TJ can do it but know CG can.

  6. Joe in Michigan Says:

The kid Godwin deserves it. He’s worked hard, did the dirty work, played hurt when he was able, and has never complained about his stats. Now the Bucs need to get Shaq to sign on the dotted line.

  7. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I was sort of surprised when we used the Tag on Godwin instead of Shaq.
IF we sign Barrett, all is well, but if we don’t, and he walks for more money elsewhere, it is not gonna be good.

  8. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Chris while I agree I wanted Shaq franchised, the difference in those tags is about 5 million. I trust Licht has a plan to sign Shaq or use that 18-20M or so to get a top tier replacement. Somewhere a tough call had to be made. I expect a wave of extensions to be announced in a day or two followed by an announcement Shaq is back.

  9. Oxycondoms Says:

This will come down to if glazers trust barrett with all that money. Has anyone campaigned for barrett like white did for david besides a drunk arians? Barret is without a doubt important but may be too expensive. He also seems to play big when money is on the horizon

CG already stated that he’d gladly accept the “franchise tag” to be be able to “Gor to war with his Brothers next Season” and that he “wouldn’t take a few more $$$ to go elsewhere and be miserable” . Now THAT’S a “Team Player” ! No talk from him about “Breaking the Bank” like someone else we know . Just like TB12 he’s all about “Team” and not himself . As far as Shaq I think they’ll come to “terms” because a “ring” means more to these players than a few extra $$$ .

I knew I made the right move getting a Godwin jersey this season after he gave up his number to TB. 😉
