Derrick Brooks Mentioned “Other Matters” He Won’t Name That Tom Brady Handled At One Buc Palace

March 18th, 2021

Buccaneers legend Derrick Brooks will tell you that great leadership is necessary to build a Super Bowl team. For Brooks, it’s not an option or a welcome bonus that comes along occasionally with a talented player.

Brooks visited with Tiki Barber on CBS Sports Radio this week and was asked about Tom Brady’s leadership and how Brady effectively was “reaching across the offensive-defensive divide” in the locker room.

Barber cited Brady getting Devin White’s mind right when White didn’t make the Pro Bowl. And Brooks, who is very tight with White, noted that was just one example.

In fact, Brooks believes the Tampa Bay environment freed Brady to tap new areas of his leadership, and Brooks implied that he is aware of some juicy examples that he deemed unfit for the public airwaves.

“…Tom had the opportunity to lead a team and be himself very differently than he had previously been, because of the personality of the head coach,” Brooks said. “Tom, in this situation, it fit what he needed to be in his life and in his career. And we saw a very different Tom Brady in certain aspects. But when it mattered most, we saw the Tom Brady that was raised in this league under those New England traits. Those things that came, no matter when you talk about the Devin White situation or other matters that I can’t discuss on-air, but you saw that part of Tom and that collateral that he earned throughout this league show up on this football team — where years past it did not and they did not fulfill that potential. But they did this year. So I would say it was a combination of Tom being embraced with this new opportunity and and this young football team willing to accept that.”

Joe’s enjoying the trickling out of Brady leadership stories behind the scenes, even if some of them are veiled like this one and not as fun as Brady demanding players “talk sh*t to me.”

This is what I tell the folks that say we didn’t win because of Tom Brady. My issue with Winston was not always that he was a turnover machine. It was simply you could tell that he wasn’t a mature enough leader. Brady rightfully so immediately commands respect and everyone’s attention. Even if Brady’s play declines I still think we will be very competitive just off his leadership alone.

The Brady influence can not be overstated. Myself and several of my buddies from the sports bar are still trying to wrap our heads around the fact that New England actually allowed Tom Brady to get away.
Fans up there are quite pissed at Bill Belichik, and if he has another losing season, it may be his last.

This franchise needed a true face of the franchise QB. Not somebody who talks it and doesn’t walk it! Not somebody who more than half the locker room had no faith in. Selfish fools here talk about team and want 1 player to be coddled and excused from responsibilities!!!

I think Brooks’ comment is pretty savvy. Good analysis.

Wanna bet the Fournette mid-season “crisis” is one of the situations?

    I bet you’re right.

  7. Buc50 Says:

This is why I wouldn’t be mad if Fournette went on his way. He had a great run in the playoffs but it seamed to me that he was almost hostile to sharing with Jones when Jones had great success.

And The other Joe thinks leadership is over rated. I never understood that take.

Brady is everything JW wasn’t/isn’t. Once Winston did his little geek show/Eat a W(ang)/Dance in the visiting locker room…he was officially pathetic in my book. And I wanted him back over Bridgewater/Rivers or any other option other than Brady. Brady has been even better than advertised…which is hard to fathom.

I’m sure you guys heard succups coming back two more to go in my opinion Suh and AB

Youngbucs little man Brady is not the bucs franchise quarterback remember he’s 43 and will be 44 years old when the season starts little man ok lol lol 😆 😂 😄 🤣!!! Now go play outside with your friends !!!

  12. Youngbucs Says:

Oneilbucs don’t talk to me unless you answering my question. You keep ducking it. So I will ask again is it super bowl or bust for winston??!!! He now has everything you claimed he didn’t have with the Bucs. He has great coaching a great organization a oline run gm defense a kicker and a good special teams returner. And he sat for a year and learned the offense from a all time great QB. So there should be no excuses why he can’t succeed right ??? Is it super bowl or bust for him???? Or more excuses and low standards???!!

  13. Youngbucs Says:

By the way as long as Brady is here he is our franchise QB it’s not about age 🤡. Anything Brady does here goes in the books like that weak td record he broke of your boy!!!! And that Super Bowl he just won!!!!

  14. Youngbucs Says:

If you not answering my question don’t even respond to me!

  15. Youngbucs Says:

He 43 going on 44 and still way better than Winston!!! I mean goodness which guy in his prime now that deserves emojis 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤡🤡

  16. Hissylizzard Says:

It was obvious his influence on the team and how he cares about is winning….that’s what separates him from the pretend to be great QBs like Wison,Watson,Mahommes,etc…..he has a good understanding of the game and seemingly player psychology, and shares it with the team….you dont hear about any of these other QBs watching film and texting players, telling them strategies, talking a player up and making him believe he is good even though he dodnt make the pro bowl….White was a big part of the playoff success….Brady doesn’t want power or control,he wants to win and he does it in all phases….if he takes alot of sacks in a game ,he can tell the lineman how to fix it or develop better game plans ,other qbs cannot….peyton was the same way

  17. Youngbucs Says:

Wow oneilbucs you really scared of the subject of winston having to produce now. You always try to have the last words grow a pair dude you scared to say it. But it comes naturally for you to trash the Bucs QB and the Bucs organization smh.

  18. Youngbucs Says:

You are a front runner because I guarantee if he does his thing. You will be here poking your chest out but afraid right now to admit the time is now for him. You have no problem making bold statements about the Bucs though grow a pair.
